Background / History

The T'au are portrayed as a young, energetic xenos civilization whose conventional applied technology surpasses that of many Imperial worlds, despite being inferior to humanity in some higher-end technologies. Their greatest danger to the Imperium is ideological rather than purely military: the Greater Good offers material improvement, social advancement, and order to populations burdened by Imperial taxation, pollution, stagnation, and neglect 588 602.

Rather than confronting the Imperium directly, the T'au developed a Point Colonization Plan. They infiltrate isolated human worlds, convert them into bridgeheads, then use local collaborators to influence neighboring planets over generations. The strategy relies on the Imperium's immense territory and slow response times; T'au planners found that human reinforcements often failed to arrive even centuries after a world had been colonized 605.

Water Blue Star

The T'au arrived on Water Blue Star as merchants roughly fifty years before the Imperial intervention. They provided water purification, industrial automation, medical systems, and other technologies that improved productivity and environmental conditions; the planetary governor eventually supported them and secretly joined the Greater Good 600 602.

Water Caste diplomats cultivated support among civilians, gangs, officials, and military officers. By the time Inquisitor Thraxol arrived, approximately twenty-one billion people supported the T'au, while only Hive City 2 and its surrounding four billion inhabitants remained loyal to the Imperium 600 603.

After the covert project was exposed, Ethereal Chou Yun ordered open conquest. The T'au mobilized 100,000 Fire Caste warriors and up to 150 million armed human supporters against Hive City 2 605. Li Qinwu's infiltration of the Secondary Hive City, combined with Busi's seizure of T'au networked systems, turned the T'au's own drones, turrets, and battlesuits against them 614 616.

Following the conflict, Li retained much of the T'au-developed administrative and economic structure while removing its explicitly T'au political elements. Former rebel marshals were appointed to govern Water Blue Star under an Imperial framework 640.

Sweet Star

Sweet Star was a more mature colonization project. The T'au spent more than a century studying the planet before replacing the governor and senior officials with T'au-educated clones. Stealth Battlesuit teams assassinated the originals, allowing the replacements to guide the takeover from within 924.

Over roughly sixty years, the T'au restricted the Imperial Cult, paid farmers premium prices for sugar, introduced advanced agriculture and industry, built schools and hospitals, and gradually replaced Imperial language, culture, and institutions with T'au equivalents. Sweet Star continued paying Imperial taxes, concealing its transformation from outside authorities 924.

When former PDF personnel and Imperial Cult members organized resistance, the T'au responded with mass repression: over ten million civilians were killed during protests, more than one hundred million people were confined in concentration camps, and nearly fifty million devout Imperial citizens were executed 933. By the time Li Qinwu's fleet arrived, much of the population had no knowledge of the Imperium or the God-Emperor 932 953.

The T'au initially negotiated with Li Qinwu, offering sugar and industrial technology in exchange for tolerance of their occupation. Li used the negotiations to acquire resources and a Protector-class battleship while covertly preparing a restoration campaign 941 944 945. The occupation collapsed after Imperial assassinations crippled the Four Councils, the Space Elevator was contaminated, and the T'au fleet was destroyed or driven off 955 957 966 968.

After the war, eight million T'au corpses were buried in a mass grave. Sweet Star retained useful T'au infrastructure, but its government began a fifty-year restoration of Imperial language, architecture, culture, and political identity 1027.

The Greater Good

The Greater Good functions as the ideological basis of T'au rule. It is presented as a system of collective purpose, prosperity, and social order that appeals strongly to human populations living under failing Imperial institutions 588 605.
