A Gravity Spell that made ground gravity range from one to eleven times was practically no different from not casting anything at all.
Even without doing anything, ground gravity was already at one times. Yet Arnold spent an entire week making the minute adjustments between eleven times and one times.
Then he began researching how to reduce ground gravity below one times. Geomagnetic Force gave objects a downward ground gravity of one times. To make someone feel ground gravity at 0.9 times, he needed to apply an upward force to offset part of that one times gravity.
Before he had even succeeded, Arnold had already named it the Weak Gravity Spell. Why not call it repulsion? Because Arnold felt that if the effect was too weak, calling it repulsion would tarnish the name. After all, as his research continued, the gravity exerted by the Gravity Spell upon objects grew stronger and stronger. Arnold estimated that upon reaching the Deity-level, the Gravity Spell's ground gravity might reach a thousandfold, perhaps even ten thousandfold. Only once he developed a repulsive force at least equal to one times gravity would he rename the Weak Gravity Spell.
If Deity-level figures who cultivated Earth Law learned of Arnold's idea, they would probably curse him for indulging in wild fantasies. The Earth Law derived from the Gravity Spell produced only terrifying attraction; it could not produce repulsion. Of course, that excluded one particularly terrifying fellow.
Arnold spent two months researching an enhanced version of the Gravity Spell, raising ground gravity to three times. He then spent another week studying the Gravity Spell, making ground gravity range from eleven to nineteen times, and another week adjusting it between eleven and one times. Yet after another half month, Arnold still had not developed the Weak Gravity Spell.
Half a month had passed, and Arnold had not even grasped the slightest hint of repulsion. He stopped his research and pondered for a long while.
After a long time, Arnold finally understood why he could not develop repulsion.
The Gravity Spell had progressed so smoothly because magic could make special use of Geomagnetic Force. Throughout the process, Geomagnetic Force had always existed. Arnold merely needed to strengthen or weaken that force.
Repulsion, however, was different. According to Arnold's conception, it was the complete opposite of Geomagnetic Force, producing an upward force. Arnold barely understood Geomagnetic Force itself, so how could he possibly create from nothing a repulsive force corresponding to it?
Once Arnold realized that creating repulsion was beyond what he could currently conceive, he immediately gave up and decided to study it again in the future. Abandoning repulsion, he shifted his research in another direction.
Ground gravity always pointed downward. Could he change its direction? The moment that thought arose, Arnold could not restrain himself and began deducing the possibility once more.
Unfortunately, Arnold's spiritual power was only at the Fifth-level Warrior stage. What complicated things could he possibly deduce?
Another half month passed in the blink of an eye. Beside a stream in the back mountains of Ernst Academy, Arnold opened his eyes helplessly once again.
The idea had been good, but reality was harsh. An entire month had passed, and Arnold had gained almost nothing. His attempts to deduce the Gravity Spell had sounded a warning bell for him: he was too weak. Even good ideas could not be transformed into strength.
Once he became stronger in the future, Arnold would definitely research repulsion and the redirection of ground gravity again. For now, he should obediently continue researching the enhanced Gravity Spell.
Though it was merely an improvement to the Gravity Spell, this enhanced version was quite effective. Arnold had never neglected his physical training, and three times gravity was more effective for training than the original Gravity Spell. It was said that under four times gravity, not only the body, but even the blood and meridians within would endure four times the pressure.
Thus, Arnold once again researched ways to increase the Gravity Spell's gravity. Another month passed, and he had deduced the spell to the point where it could not be improved further. The gravity produced by the spell had truly reached four times. A fourfold Gravity Spell could only be cast by a Seventh-level Mage of the earth element, yet Arnold could already cast it. How could he not feel pleased with himself?
In the blink of an eye, September arrived. Arnold's spiritual power had reached the threshold of a Fifth-level Mage. He could break through at any moment, though he might also remain stuck for two or three months.
Arnold's understanding of the Gravity Spell had reached a profound level, so he began shifting his focus to other directions.
The path of Earth Law summarized by Grand Magus Morin contained only gravity, Earth Fluctuation, and Earth Element. Those who came before planted the trees, and those who came after enjoyed the shade. Arnold began studying directions other than gravity. As for Earth Element, Arnold had a feeling that among all earth-element spells, applications related to Earth Element accounted for the majority. Even forbidden spells included two or three of them. He felt there was no need to study it for now, so he began researching Earth Fluctuation instead.
In truth, many earth-element spells produced special fluctuations when cast. Take the Gravity Spell, for example. The spell cast by different earth-element mages always contained subtle differences. As long as one completely mastered the fluctuations of earth-element energy, one could use that energy to cancel out the effects of a Gravity Spell.
This direction did not involve fluctuations alone. Things such as vibrations also fell within it.
Arnold began with the simplest thing, such as the first-level spell—Earthshaking Art. Earthshaking Art could make part of the ground sway like ripples. In truth, this was a rudimentary application of earth vibrations.
Earthshaking Art merely caused the ground to vibrate. If this vibration could be used in a special way to strike an enemy, could it cause resonance within the enemy's body?
Unfortunately, earth-element magic had too few spells related to vibrations and fluctuations. There was the low-level Earthshaking Art, while the high-level forbidden spell Pulse Guard probably counted as one.
