Background / History

Bai Jianian is Bai Deye’s illegitimate younger son and Bai Jin’s younger half-brother. His mother, Yuan Xiaohui, had been Bai Deye’s longtime secret lover before becoming the Bai Family’s current mistress. Bai Jianian was raised as a favored member of the family while Bai Jin was neglected and kept apart from them. 3 10 12

He studied medicine at Xu City Medical University and had a reputation as a talented student. He was also considered one of the Bai Family’s key protégés. However, his standing in the experimental laboratory was later shown to depend heavily on his social ties, including his relationship with Chen Mo, rather than his research ability alone. 10 20

When Bai Jin was selected as an experimental-group leader, Bai Jianian reacted with jealousy and hired thugs to ambush him. Lu Chengze retaliated by ordering Bai Jianian’s dominant right hand crippled; Lu Jin and Lu Mu carried out the attack inside the Bai residence. The injury destroyed his fingers beyond repair and jeopardized his future in medicine. 8 10

Afterward, Bai Jianian took leave from university and was reportedly preparing to go abroad for rehabilitation. He also became the subject of—and was linked to—the rumors accusing Bai Jin of arranging his injury. 17

Personality

Bai Jianian is resentful of Bai Jin’s return, academic success, and increasing social support. He repeatedly frames himself as the injured party, using tears, vulnerability, and concern for Chen Mo to gain sympathy while directing hostility toward Bai Jin. 27 28

He is especially sensitive about his legitimacy and place in the Bai Family. Despite being raised by Bai Deye and Yuan Xiaohui, he views Bai Jin as the illegitimate interloper and directs much of his hatred toward Bai Jin’s mother, Jing Xianya. 28 31

His confidence collapses when faced with overwhelming power. After Lu Chengze publicly questions Yuan Xiaohui’s status in the Bai household, Bai Jianian is unable to respond and leaves the racing club in humiliation. 31

Following his injury, Bai Jianian takes leave from school and is associated with accusations that Bai Jin orchestrated the attack. The rumors fuel Chen Mo’s confrontation with Bai Jin and hostility within the laboratory. 17 18

Racing-Club Confrontation

Bai Jianian attends Huo Hongbao’s racing club with Chen Mo and wrongly assumes Bai Jin has come to seek Chen Mo’s attention. After accusing Bai Jin of causing the No. 1 racer’s crash and insulting Jing Xianya, he is beaten with a baseball bat and publicly humiliated by Lu Chengze. 27 28 30 31
