Right inside that small office at the ninja academy.
Hiruzen Sarutobi piled his face with amicable warmth and greeted Naruto with a grin, though the target was only a Shadow Clone.
"Naruto, ah, I want to ask you to step out of the ninja academy early. How do you feel about that?"
The Shadow Clone raised an eyebrow.
"Are you kidding? I'm the tail-ender of the entire grade, and you want me to graduate early? Is your head working right?"
Hiruzen Sarutobi opposite him got so choked up that blue veins were popping on his forehead, and a huge cross-mark popped out.
He ground his back teeth and spat out the words.
"Your teacher told me you've long since reached the graduation level, and asked me to come over and help you process the paperwork."
The Shadow Clone touched his own chin in response.
"I remember early graduation requires a nod from mom and dad. How did he solicit that? Did he run over to the Pure Land to ask?"
Hiruzen Sarutobi: "..."
"I'm your guardian now, my nod is enough."
"That won't do, hell no. I'm only seven years old, okay? How could you have the nerve to send a seven-year-old squirt out on missions? Besides, whether I can even graduate is still up in the air."
The Shadow Clone didn't give the Third an ounce of face.
Right now he wasn't lacking that little bit of cash, and who the hell would be happy pulling weeds, cleaning out outhouses, and picking up garbage every single day.
Hiruzen Sarutobi looked at Naruto, and his brain ached. His little abacus was clicking loudly: Naruto was the secret weapon he held in the palm of his hand; only if his strength came up could he suppress those ninja clans and Danzo's bunch. The sooner people acknowledged him, the sooner things would quiet down. Anyway, Naruto was the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, no matter what he couldn't jump up to his seat as Hokage—who would be willing to let a Jinchuriki who could blow up at any time sit in that chair? This was also the reason he had secretly allowed Danzo to let slip that Naruto was the demon fox. In Hiruzen Sarutobi's eyes, a grown-up Naruto was just an enforcer who could never flip out of his Wuzhishan. That was why he was so anxiously looking forward to Naruto growing stronger so he could firmly secure his Hokage seat. After his son Asuma matured, he would come back to smoothly take over the succession. Originally, he had cultivated his eldest son Shinnosuke Sarutobi, grooming him along the path of the Fourth Hokage, having him grind through the ANBU and gild himself on the battlefield, only to never expect him to finally fall on a mundane logistical errand. Back then Hiruzen Sarutobi almost went crazy. Fortunately he had a little brat left over, but the boy was too unpromising, constantly clamoring to protect the Daimyo, muttering stupid things about how the Land of Fire only had a single jewel. Hiruzen Sarutobi simply chased him to the Daimyo's side to rub shoulders and get familiar, all so the Daimyo could smoothly point him out as Hokage later on. Just look, wasn't it because Danzo wasn't familiar with the Daimyo's side back then that Kakashi snatched the Hokage spot halfway through? Now Naruto clearly had enough skill, yet he stubbornly stayed at the ninja academy and refused to budge, driving the Third to extreme frustration.
Hiruzen Sarutobi put on a smiling face again and spoke to Naruto.
"How about this, if you can smoothly graduate, I'll allow you to pick a jutsu from the Scroll of Seals! The things recorded on there all start at B-rank, you know."
The Shadow Clone's left eye suddenly lit up: "Ten!"
Hiruzen Sarutobi's face instantly turned as black as the bottom of a pot.
"At most two!"
"Eight!"
"Two!"
"Five!"
"Two!!"
"Tch..." The Shadow Clone slanted his eyes at the Third. "Stint."
Hiruzen Sarutobi: "(╬ ̄皿 ̄)!! "
Seeing that this old fellow was about to flare up, the Shadow Clone neatly and cleanly dispelled the technique.
Hiruzen Sarutobi let out a long breath, a trace of joy finally showing on his face—it was done.
The ninja academy headmaster, who had been standing there all along listening in, almost had his eyeballs pop out. What the fuck? A Shadow Clone?! The last time a student used a Shadow Clone to attend class had to date back six years ago to Itachi Uchiha. Naruto, this Jinchuriki, could actually wield even a B-rank Shadow Clone? Ordinary Chunin couldn't pull off that trick.
Never mind the headmaster's dumbfounded look. Naruto's true body was currently clawing his way up the cliff face with a single palm when he suddenly froze right there.
He kicked off the bottom of his feet, standing rigidly on the precipice, touching his chin and pondering.
"Two forbidden jutsu... It's not a bad deal after all."
In any case, those minor academy lessons had long since been stuffed entirely into his brain by his Sharingan. Graduating early and getting dragged out to train would indeed let him build up his strength faster.
Might Guy on top of the cliff cracked his voice and shouted at him.
"Naruto! What's wrong? Not practicing the ascent anymore?"
Naruto grinned and waved his hand at Might Guy.
"I'm heading over for an exam, I'll come back and keep training afterwards."
Might Guy: "Eh?"
When Naruto changed into clean clothes and rushed to the school, the sixth-year exams had already sounded their opening gong.
Hiruzen Sarutobi squinted his eyes to size Naruto up from top to bottom, nodding his head quite with satisfaction.
"Not bad, you really have enough grit, you can still improve this fast even missing an eyeball. When Tsunade comes back, I'll dispatch her to install a prosthetic eye for you."
"Don't bother, thanks, I'm already used to it."
"Where is the examination room? I need to keep training after I finish."
"Right next door, follow along." The Chunin proctor's tone was completely filled with disgust.
Naruto couldn't even be bothered to get angry at such small fry. If he really had to settle scores one by one with those sidelong glances, probably not many living people would be left in all of Konoha.
Even Iruka looked at Naruto with a pocketful of disgust right now, who told his parents to also perish beneath the Nine-Tails' claws, plus he hadn't become Naruto's teacher yet.
Pushing open the examination room door, a bunch of upperclassmen inside swept their gazes over uniformly.
Even though there was a five-year gap, Naruto's stature was not a bit shorter than this group of twelve-year-old sixth-year runts.
A kid sporting a spiky head wore a face full of disdain and blurted out right at Naruto.
"Just you? You still want to learn like my boss and skip grades to graduate?!"
