Background

Sasuke was deeply attached to his older brother, Itachi. Naruto repeatedly intruded on their time together, called Sasuke “Second Pillar,” and beat him in deliberately one-sided spars to force his Sharingan to develop faster. Itachi recognized that Naruto was holding back and reframed the humiliations as the value of having a rival worth pursuing. 10

During the Uchiha crisis, Sasuke arrived at the clan grounds to find corpses and destruction everywhere, then witnessed Itachi fighting their father, Fugaku. The massacre left him isolated, publicly blamed as “the murderer’s little brother,” and targeted by other children despite his inheritance of Fugaku’s estate. 77 81

His surviving clansmen’s treatment helped stabilize his One-Tomoe Sharingan, but also deepened the resentment and pride that shaped his reputation as a prodigy. 91 When Naruto took possession of Fugaku’s Sharingan, Sasuke repeatedly confronted him over the eyes; Naruto later claimed that Fugaku had entrusted them to him and asked him to guide Sasuke’s revenge. 68 99

Personality

Sasuke is proud, volatile, and intensely sensitive to the gap between his own strength and Itachi’s. Humiliation at Naruto’s hands regularly turns into renewed determination, even when he knows he is badly outmatched. 10 99 111

His fixation on revenge is partly a self-imposed identity. On his Team 7 registration form, he lists “train, take walks, play Guojji” as his dream; Naruto interprets this as evidence that Sasuke still wants an ordinary life beneath his cold façade. 98

Defection and Itachi’s Death
