Background / History
Arthur was recognized as the Sobeia Kingdom’s strongest Nine-Star Swordsman—distinguished not because he had merely reached the highest available rank, but because no higher rank existed to measure his strength. He entered the World’s Strongest Swordsman Tournament seeking Ishgar’s highest swordsmanship honor rather than its prize money 21 22.
His first tournament battle demonstrated his standing: after every other Group C contestant united against him, Arthur defeated more than one hundred opponents with a single use of Light’s Radiance 22. He later defeated Erza Scarlet in the semifinal, overcoming her Requip armors with increasingly powerful light-based techniques before breaking her Adamantine Barrier with Light’s Judgment 25.
Arthur’s encounter with Yoriichi Tsugikuni reshaped his understanding of swordsmanship. Though he entered the final determined to test himself, Yoriichi effortlessly countered his techniques and cut apart his fully charged Light’s Judgment. Arthur conceded defeat, while Yoriichi was crowned the tournament’s strongest swordsman 27 28 29.
During the subsequent Monster Tide, Arthur joined Sword City’s defense and fought the Nine-Star Kui Lion. After Qi Yan had weakened the invading force, Arthur used Light’s Judgment to severely wound the monster 31 34. He later attacked Demon Dragon Alazam with the same ultimate technique, but the dragon shattered the attack against its head and left Arthur seriously injured along with the other elite fighters 35.
After Qi Yan revealed that Yoriichi Tsugikuni was an alias, Arthur became an open admirer of his swordsmanship and saw Qi Yan as the model for his future growth 30 36.
Personality
Arthur is competitive, disciplined, and deeply devoted to improving as a swordsman. He entered the tournament to pursue the title of Ishgar’s strongest swordsman and challenged both Clay and Yoriichi as rivals worthy of testing his limits 21 25.
Despite his confidence, he acknowledges superior skill without resentment. He sincerely praised Erza after defeating her, admitting that she could surpass him with time, and openly accepted the enormous difference between himself and Yoriichi after their final 25 28 29. His respect for mastery turns into admiration after Qi Yan’s identity is revealed 30 36.

Story Role / Major Arcs
World’s Strongest Swordsman Tournament
Arthur entered as Sobeia’s most famous and strongest Nine-Star Swordsman. He swept Group C with Light’s Radiance, defeated Erza in the semifinal, and reached the final against Yoriichi Tsugikuni 22 25 27.
In the final, Arthur pressed Yoriichi with Flash Sword and Light’s Judgment, but was outclassed in both technique and magical control. His defeat established Yoriichi as the tournament champion and shifted Arthur’s understanding of swordsmanship’s limits 28 29.
