Background

Qi Yan was a recently graduated high-school student from Blue Star before an accident transported him into the world of Fairy Tail. He awakened a Card-Drawing System around the time of his arrival; the system required him to bind himself to a guild and could draw deceased characters from other worlds as usable Character Cards. He joined Fairy Tail in Magnolia roughly half a month after arriving and immediately resolved to become an S-Rank Mage. 1 2

His first ten-pull produced the Gold Character Card of Ulquiorra Cifer. The card gave him access to Ulquiorra’s appearance, memories, combat experience, and abilities through Take Over Magic. 1 3

After later drawing Yoriichi Tsugikuni, Qi Yan discovered that some non-magical aptitudes gained while transformed could remain after releasing Take Over. This allowed him to practice Sun Breathing in his natural body, though his insufficient physical foundation initially made sustained breathing techniques painful and dangerous. 14 15

In his ordinary state, Qi Yan appears as an unassuming young man, a contrast that regularly causes opponents and observers to underestimate him. His Take Over forms alter his clothing, features, aura, and combat presence drastically. 4 32

Personality

Qi Yan is ambitious, practical, and intensely motivated by advancement. He evaluates missions partly by danger but also by their payment and system rewards, often treating greater risk as an opportunity for more draws and more magic power. His eagerness to accept high-ranked work has repeatedly brought him into conflict with Makarov’s caution. 6 12 19 43

Despite this opportunism, he takes responsibility for clients and civilians. He refused to abandon Mayor Kos when the Phantom Thief Guild targeted him, helped defend Sobeia Kingdom during the Monster Tide, and fought Alazam after claiming the king as his client. 12 30 36

He is confident and sarcastic in battle, especially against arrogant enemies, but remains aware that his overwhelming transformations are temporary and costly. He privately considers his natural self weak beside the talents he borrows, particularly Yoriichi’s swordsmanship. 8 24 43

Qi Yan is also money-conscious without being greedy at others’ expense. He declined Sobeia’s additional compensation, accepted only the agreed rewards, and split the SS-Rank mission earnings equally with Erza despite contributing most of the combat power. 42 43

Card-Drawing System

Qi Yan joined Fairy Tail, drew Ulquiorra Cifer, and immediately demonstrated S-Rank-level combat potential by defeating Natsu. 1 4

He and Elfman then accepted a mission that escalated into an S-Rank operation against the Phantom Thief Guild. Qi Yan defeated its ordinary members, exposed the limits of Camille’s Full Reflection Magic, and finished Camille with First-Stage Resurrección and Black Cero. 6 8 10

Although the mission established his reputation, Makarov refused to grant him S-Rank access before the official promotion examination. Qi Yan instead began pursuing higher-paying work and a permanent home in Magnolia. 12 15

Yoriichi Card and Sobeia Tournament

After drawing Yoriichi Tsugikuni, Qi Yan began using Sun Breathing and entered the World’s Strongest Swordsman Tournament under Yoriichi’s identity for its 20 million J prize. 14 21

He overwhelmed more than one hundred elite swordsmen, defeated Clay and Arthur, experienced enlightenment in magic-infused swordsmanship, and was declared Ishgar’s strongest swordsman. The public began calling him the Sword God. 24 27 29

Monster Siege and Demon Dragon Alazam

When a Monster Tide attacked Sobeia Kingdom, Qi Yan revealed his Ulquiorra Take Over and defeated five Nine-Star Monsters in rapid succession. 32 33 34

After Demon Dragon Alazam appeared, Qi Yan revealed that he was also Yoriichi Tsugikuni and fought the dragon with Sun Breathing. He later used Ulquiorra’s Descorrer, First-Stage Resurrección, Segunda Etapa, Black Cero, and Thunder Spear to destroy Alazam. 36 38 40 41

Qi Yan and Erza accepted only the originally promised 50 million J in total compensation, then returned to Fairy Tail as widely reported heroes. 42 43

Qi Yan’s subsequent draws gave him Ace and Toji Fushiguro. Six months later, after continued training, he used Ace’s flames and Toji’s physical power to destroy a Black Magic Cult hideout, defeat more than a thousand cultists, and rescue several hundred villagers. 46 47 48
