Background / History
Origins
Makarov was born to Fairy Tail founder Yuri Dreyar and Rita. Mavis Vermillion named him in the hope that he would become a gentle leader who cared for his companions. 331
He eventually became Fairy Tail's Third Guild Master and one of Ishgar's Ten Wizard Saints. By the time Ed arrives in Magnolia, Makarov has led the guild for decades and treats its members as his children despite their constant property damage and brawling. 2 220
Ed's Mentor
Makarov inducts Ed into Fairy Tail, personally placing a gold guild mark on the back of his right hand. He classifies Flying Thunder God as Caster Magic, recognizes Ed's explosive physical technique as the beginning of a second, strength-based magic, and advises him to control his output rather than damage himself through overexertion. 2
He arranges Ed's guild dormitory, loans him his first month's rent, and insists that he earn future expenses through missions. When Ed later offers to repay a debt with mission earnings, Makarov accepts while clarifying that the debt was meant to teach responsibility and caution around civilians. 2 12
Succession and the Magic Council
Makarov considers Ed a candidate to become Fairy Tail's Fourth Guild Master and begins teaching him Fairy Law, an ultimate magic reserved for guild-master succession. 72 73
During Laxus's civil war, Makarov publicly confirms that he has selected Ed as his successor after the S-Class Trial. Though he expels Laxus for endangering Fairy Tail, the decision devastates him as both Guild Master and grandfather. 110
After the Tenrou Island battle, Makarov resigns as Third Guild Master and formally transfers the guild-master badge to Ed. 220 Ed later recommends him for the Magic Council, where he becomes an official council member and a political representative for Fairy Tail. 225
Alvarez Negotiations
Makarov leaves for the Alvarez Empire in an attempt to prevent war through diplomacy. He gives Ed a one-year deadline before Fairy Tail is to come for him if he does not return. 324
His negotiations fail when Zeref reveals that he seeks Fairy Heart and intends an extermination conflict against humanity. Zeref nearly kills Makarov, but Mest rescues him through repeated teleportation. 327
Appearance
Makarov is a small, elderly man with white hair and a beard. Although usually seen in casual clothing and drinking at Fairy Tail's bar, he can expand into a massive giant through his magic. 43 163 220
- Normally has a diminutive, elderly build.
- Can grow large enough to tower over the Dragon Knight and Grimoire Heart's airship. 163 181
- His magic is commonly depicted as golden light. 163 181
- Wears the cloak of a Ten Wizard Saint during Ed's succession ceremony. 220
Personality
Makarov is fiercely protective of Fairy Tail. He considers its members his children and responds to threats against them with overwhelming force, regardless of an enemy's status or strength. 164 207
As Guild Master, he balances warmth with discipline. He reprimands guild members for reckless fights, property destruction, and financial irresponsibility, yet repeatedly gives struggling people—including Gajeel, Ultear, and Meredy—a chance to move forward within Fairy Tail. 12 98 203
He is also notably informal and easily exasperated. Makarov frequently drinks at the guild bar, sleeps through Magic Council proceedings, and complains that Ed shifted the paperwork, compensation claims, and public criticism of Fairy Tail onto him. 69 225 226 232
Abilities & Skills
Giant Magic
Makarov can enlarge his entire body or individual limbs into a giant form, combining immense physical force with his already formidable magic power.

- Blocked Acnologia's advance so Fairy Tail could escape. 207
Three Pillar Gods
A maximum defensive spell that creates three enormous pillars and layered magical barriers around Makarov and those he protects.
- Shielded the Magic Council chamber from a surprise explosion. 277
- Protected injured councilors from Jackal's repeated Curse Magic detonations despite suffering burns and a broken arm. 278

Rain of Light
A light-magic attack that releases countless golden arrows from a sphere of condensed magic power.
- Incapacitated Hughes and severely burned Byro's tentacles in Edolas. 163
- Was used against Hades during their battle on Tenrou Island, though Hades countered it with darkness magic. 190
