Background / History

Laxus was frail as a child and unable to endure his own immense magic power. Ivan acquired a Lightning Dragon lacrima and implanted it in him, granting him Dragon Slayer abilities and strengthening his body. 116

He first serves as Ed's opponent during the S-Class assessment. Laxus relies on Lightning Armor, extreme durability, and careful analysis of Ed's teleportation habits, eventually revealing his Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic. Though Ed defeats him after their final clash devastates the battlefield, Laxus recognizes Ed as a worthy rival and asks him to keep his Dragon Slayer Magic secret. 30 31

Following Phantom Lord's attack on Fairy Tail, Laxus becomes openly contemptuous of members he considers weak. Believing weakness invites humiliation, he declares his intention to inherit Fairy Tail, expel its weaker members, and create the strongest guild in history. 68 69

His campaign escalates into the Fairy Tail Civil War. With the Thunder Legion and Fried's citywide enchantments, Laxus forces guildmates into battle and demands that Makarov acknowledge him as the Fourth Guild Master. After Ed defeats the Thunder Legion, Laxus activates Thunder Palace and holds Magnolia hostage rather than concede. 104 106

Fairy Tail destroys Thunder Palace through coordinated action, disproving Laxus's belief that its weaker members are useless. Ed subsequently defeats Laxus, but Makarov permits him to cast Fairy Law.
