Background
Early life
Laxus is Makarov's grandson. Makarov remembers him as an obedient child who loved Fairy Tail before he became distant, prideful, and fixated on the guild's public strength. 3 38
Ivan states that Laxus was sickly as a child and received an implanted Dragon Slayer Lacrima, granting him Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic. Ivan later intends to remove and sell the Lacrima, treating his son’s power as a commodity. 45
S-Class examination and rivalry with Ye
Laxus and Ye were selected as Fairy Tail's S-Class examination candidates. Recognizing that Ye's exceptional senses made the exam unfair, Laxus proposed a direct duel to determine who would challenge Gildarts. 6 7
During the fight, Laxus unveiled Lightning Dragon Slayer Mode, but Ye withstood his strongest lightning attacks and defeated him. The loss left Laxus humiliated, though Makarov urged him to use it as motivation to grow. 7 8
Laxus later became an S-Class Mage. His rivalry with Ye continued; one of their later duels destroyed an island and brought further trouble upon Makarov from the Magic Council. 9
Resentment toward Fairy Tail
After Phantom Lord's defeat, Laxus condemned Fairy Tail's weaker members and announced his intention to become guild master, expel those he considered unworthy, and build the strongest guild. Ye publicly undermined his speech by handing him work gloves and telling him to help rebuild the guild himself. 27
His resentment toward Ye stemmed from Ye surpassing him in strength, achievements, Makarov's trust, and status as a Ten Wizard Saint. Despite his hostility, Ye reveals that Laxus and Mystogan had secretly destroyed much of Phantom Lord's remaining branches. 27
Fairy Tail Civil War and expulsion
During the Harvest Festival, Laxus and the Thunder Legion turned Magnolia into a battlefield. They petrified Fairy Tail's women, imposed combat rules on guild members, and threatened them with Fried's magic. 38 39
Laxus escalated the conflict by activating Thunder Palace, placing 300 lightning crystals over Magnolia and threatening the city if Fairy Tail did not acknowledge him as guild master. 41 42
After defeating Natsu and Gajeel, Laxus fought Ye in a long-awaited rematch. His use of Fairy Law failed to harm anyone because he did not truly consider the guild members his enemies. He subsequently overcame Ye's Life-and-Death Trial, but still lost the duel. 43
Makarov expelled Laxus for endangering guild members and civilians. Laxus accepted the punishment, ordered the Thunder Legion to remain in Fairy Tail, and departed alone while watching the Fantasy Parade from afar. 44
Personality
Laxus is fiercely proud, confrontational, and obsessed with being recognized as Fairy Tail's strongest mage. He measures a guild by its strength and reputation, initially believing weak members should be expelled to protect Fairy Tail from ridicule. 20 27 39
His arrogance is rooted in insecurity—particularly his belief that Makarov favors Ye over him. His repeated challenges to Ye are driven by a six-year grudge and a need to prove that he deserves to inherit the guild. 39 43
Despite his cruelty during the civil war, Laxus genuinely loves Fairy Tail. Fairy Law's failure exposes that he cannot regard his guildmates as enemies, and his decision to leave the Thunder Legion behind shows concern for their future and the guild's safety. 43 44
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic
Laxus wields lightning-based Dragon Slayer Magic granted by an implanted Lacrima rather than natural Dragon Slayer origins. 45
- Fires lightning attacks including Lightning Strike, Lightning Spear, Lightning Punch, and Roar of the Lightning Dragon. 7 42
- Can transform into lightning through elementalization, though Ye's Armament Haki can still strike him. 7
- Uses lightning to reinforce close-range combat and overwhelm opponents with speed, paralysis, and destructive force. 42 43
Lightning Dragon Slayer Mode
Laxus's concealed transformation greatly amplifies his lightning power and physical combat ability. He first reveals it against Ye during the S-Class examination. 7
- Produces dense lightning around his body and enhances his Dragon Slayer techniques. 7
- Allows him to overpower Natsu and Gajeel's combined Dragon Slayer roars. 42
- Was initially kept secret even from Makarov. 7
Lightning Armor
Laxus coats himself in violent lightning before engaging powerful opponents directly. 43
- Supplements his hand-to-hand fighting when his ranged magic is ineffective. 43
- Enables high-speed exchanges against Ye, though Ye remains largely unharmed. 43
Thunder Palace
Thunder Palace is Laxus's city-scale threat spell, formed from 300 lightning magic crystals suspended over Magnolia. 42
- Each crystal contains destructive lightning capable of turning Magnolia into a “sea of lightning.” 42
- The crystals are protected by Life-Link Magic, causing a retaliatory lightning strike against anyone who destroys one. 42
- Ye destroys the crystals remotely before the spell can activate. 42
Fairy Law
Fairy Law is Makarov's inherited magic, activated by Laxus during his final confrontation with Ye. 43
- Attacks only those whom the caster sincerely recognizes as enemies. 43
- Fails to injure anyone in Magnolia, revealing that Laxus still cares for Fairy Tail despite claiming to hate its members. 43
Life-and-Death Trial
Laxus resists Ye's overwhelming Conqueror's Haki after being forced into an extreme state of fear and pressure. 43
- Breaks through Ye's spiritual suppression instead of collapsing under it. 43
- Gains a temporary increase in power and launches the Dragon-Slaying Secret Art Thunderclap. 43
- Remains unable to defeat Ye despite the breakthrough. 43
Equipment / Items
- Lightning Dragon Slayer Lacrima — Implanted in Laxus by Ivan during childhood, granting him Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic. 45
Relationships
- Makarov Dreyar — Grandfather and guild master. Laxus seeks his approval but resents Makarov's trust in Ye; Makarov ultimately expels him out of love and responsibility. 3 39 44
- Ye — Primary rival. Ye defeated him in the S-Class examination, repeatedly challenged his view of strength, and defeated him again at the end of the civil war. 7 8 43
- Fried, Bickslow, and Evergreen — The Thunder Legion. They remain loyal to Laxus throughout the civil war, but he orders them to stay in Fairy Tail after his expulsion. 38 44
- Ivan — Father. Ivan implanted Laxus's Dragon Slayer Lacrima and plans to remove and sell it for profit. 45
- Gajeel Redfox — Laxus attacks Gajeel over his former Phantom Lord affiliation, refusing to accept him as a Fairy Tail member. 37
- Natsu Dragneel and Gajeel Redfox — Opponents during the civil war. Their combined Dragon Slayer attacks briefly wound Laxus before he overwhelms them. 42
