Background

Team 7 instructor

Minato became the Jonin instructor of the first Team 7, composed of Kakashi, Haru, and Kawa. He treated Kakashi as both a gifted subordinate and a student, openly sharing survival skills that the Academy could teach only in general terms, including ambush detection, tracking, countertracking, and situational tactics. 19 27

During the team’s first external escort mission, Minato sensed that the C-rank assignment had been prepared under suspicious circumstances but accepted it rather than undermine his authority as team leader. When the team was ambushed by Jonin-level enemies, he refused Kakashi’s proposal to leave him behind and instead ordered Haru and Kawa to escort the client while he and Kakashi delayed the attackers. 26 28

The mission was later reclassified as A-rank after the team reported facing four Jonin and three Chunin. Minato rewarded his students with a barbecue meal and approved Kushina’s request to teach Kakashi sealing techniques. 32

Fourth Hokage

In Konoha’s Year 50, Hiruzen Sarutobi stepped down and Minato was selected as the Fourth Hokage with the Fire Daimyō’s approval and unanimous Jonin support. At twenty-four, he became the youngest Hokage in Konoha’s history. 107

His authority was immediately constrained by Hiruzen’s continuing control over Root, the ANBU deputy-minister position, and several ANBU divisions. Minato retained only two ANBU divisions directly under his command, with Kakashi serving as captain of the First Division assigned to protect the Hokage. 108

Defense of Konoha and the Fourth Shinobi World War

When the Nine-Tails rampaged under Mangekyō Sharingan control, Minato immediately abandoned his battle against the Fourth Raikage to return to Konoha. He stabilized Kushina’s seal after Shisui weakened the genjutsu, moved Kushina to safety, and returned to Wangchuan despite his depleted chakra. 132 134

During Kushina’s childbirth, Minato was trapped inside Uchiha Flame Formation with Kushina and newborn Naruto. After Kakashi began imposing Otogakure’s reforms on the major nations, Minato informed Konoha’s clan leaders and Jonin that the Land of Fire had fifteen days to comply or face invasion.
