Peggy Carter awoke from a long slumber.
She felt as though she had had a very, very long dream, one that might have lasted longer than her entire life.
Even when she opened her eyes, her head still felt somewhat dizzy.
But the unfamiliar ceiling immediately jolted her awake.
She sat up in bed, and everything in sight felt foreign.
Since when had beds become this comfortable?
The quilt was the same. What brand was this?
And all the furniture in the room was something she had never seen before.
Peggy Carter was a little disoriented, yet there was not a single memory in her mind.
Looking at herself, she found that she had been changed into a beautiful dress. She had never seen this style before, but that did not mean she could not appreciate it.
Her skin was so pale it was frightening, as white as snow.
Breathing heavily, Peggy Carter wanted to know what had happened, but she could not remember anything.
She had only dealt with Schmidt and sent the out-of-control plane crashing into the ice. How had she ended up here?
With a glance from the corner of her eye, Peggy spotted the Vibranium Shield resting nearby. She did not see her uniform, but the sight still made her breathe a sigh of relief.
"Click."
At that moment, the door opened, and a tall, handsome Eastern man walked in.
"Captain Carter, you're awake?"
Ke Chen smiled at the somewhat bewildered Peggy Carter before him.
He had not expected the person lying beneath the ice to be Captain Carter rather than Captain America.
But since he knew quite a bit about the endless Multiverse, he did not find it all that outrageous.
"Who are you?"
Seeing that the man before her knew who she was, Peggy asked.
"My name is Ke Chen."
As Ke Chen spoke, Peggy rose from the bed. She was not used to the dress she was wearing. During the war, she had hardly ever dressed like this, and it simply felt awkward.
Captain Carter was around six feet tall, which even surprised Ke Chen.
Perhaps it was because she had been injected with the Super-Soldier Serum. Even tiny Steve, Captain America, had grown into a muscular man, so there was no reason Captain Carter would not have changed at all.
And besides...
So big!
Ke Chen silently reminded himself not to stare. They had only just met, and it would not be appropriate.
Peggy Carter had already been exceptionally gifted, and after receiving the Super-Soldier Serum, she was simply beyond description.
Even Ke Chen, who had seen plenty in his life, could only describe his amazement as something rarely seen in the world.
"Did you change my clothes?"
Captain Carter lowered her head for a glance and asked.
"It was my..."
Before Ke Chen could finish, Captain Carter threw a punch straight at him.
A Super Soldier's reflexes were far too quick. She instinctively assumed Ke Chen was some kind of pervert.
Fortunately, Ke Chen was not slow to react. He caught her punch at once, or his face would have been ruined the first time they met.
"It was my younger sister, Lorna."
Ke Chen immediately explained.
Only then did Peggy realize she had wronged Ke Chen, and she felt a little embarrassed.
Why hadn't he said it all at once?
Noticing her embarrassment, Ke Chen smiled. "You must be hungry, right? Have something to eat first."
"I know you have a lot of questions. I'll answer them slowly."
Captain Carter looked at his warm smile and nodded, choosing to believe him.
She glanced at the Vibranium Shield, but ultimately did not take it. She followed Ke Chen downstairs and saw a lavish spread of food.
"You're from China?"
"Yeah."
"No wonder. I've had Chinese food before."
Peggy Carter was a World War II veteran, so it was no surprise that she was well-traveled and knowledgeable.
"Eat."
Ke Chen told her not to stand on ceremony.
He had sent Lorna over to Elektra's house.
"Not bad."
Peggy took a bite and immediately said with bright eyes.
Mostly because she was hungry as well.
After being frozen in the ice for so long, there had long been no energy left in her body.
If not for her powerful physique, she might not have survived being thawed out so simply by Ke Chen.
Once the food was in her stomach, the two naturally began to talk.
Ke Chen told her everything he knew. There was nothing worth hiding.
He was certain that Captain Carter came from another world.
Perhaps she had come from Universe 838, the one Doctor Strange would later visit.
The more Peggy heard, the more shocked she became, and in her shock, she swept all the food before her clean.
She had actually come to another universe?
And she had arrived so unexpectedly through some Quantum Collider.
Knowing all this, Peggy found it impossible to accept.
After eating, she rushed out of the villa. Her eyesight was excellent, and across the water, she could see the modern skyscrapers on the opposite shore. She was left speechless.
Although New York had already been a modern society long ago, it had still changed after several decades.
Looking at this completely unfamiliar era, Peggy Carter felt lost.
At that moment, Ke Chen came to her side and draped an arm around her shoulders.
Under normal circumstances, if any man dared touch her like that, Captain Carter would have thrown him over her shoulder immediately. But not now.
She merely glanced at Ke Chen, knowing that the man before her had saved her.
After all, she had been frozen inside the ice. Ke Chen could have simply ignored her.
Even as a Super Soldier, she probably would not have survived that.
Ke Chen met her eyes and saw the confusion in Peggy's gaze.
That was only natural. Crossing half a century of time was already enough to numb anyone.
What was more, Peggy had now arrived in another universe.
Here, she was not the renowned Captain Carter, but merely an unknown nobody.
In that era, women had held a very low social status, and even now, it was not much better...
How many people would remember Peggy Carter?
Ke Chen spoke as gently as he could. "Perhaps this is a good thing. This world isn't all that different from yours anyway. Even if you woke up over there, several decades would still have passed."
"Here, you can start over and live the life you want."
Most importantly, if she were in her own world, her ending would be miserable.
As a member of the Illuminati, Captain Carter had been cut in half at the waist by Scarlet Witch Wanda using her own shield...
Hearing that, Peggy took a deep breath. She was not wearing lipstick, yet her lips were still vividly red.
She gradually accepted Ke Chen's words. To an old relic from the World War II era like her, there truly was not much difference.
"Can you tell me about this world?"
"Of course. What do you want to hear?"
Ke Chen asked with a smile.
"It would be best to start with World War II."
Ke Chen put an arm around Peggy and led her back inside, then released her.
He began telling Peggy about World War II in this world, something that was new to her.
And this place was very different from her world.
Of course, broadly speaking, World War II itself had not been all that different.
The differences lay in the details.
In this world, the one who had become a Super Soldier was Steve Rogers, Captain America.
In Carter's world, it had clearly been herself. That was the greatest difference.
