Organization and Doctrine

Command Structure

• Absolute authority: Danzō’s orders take precedence over all other considerations. Operatives swear to serve him until death 13.
• Separate from ANBU: Root is nominally an ANBU training program, but functions as a distinct organization rather than the Hokage’s personal assassination and tactical unit 51.
• Internal divisions: Root maintains medical, ninjutsu-analysis, and research divisions 19 47 48.

Root requires members to abandon names, surnames, personal histories, emotions, and individual futures. Its rules present obedience to Danzō as the means of protecting later generations from war and establishing peace throughout the shinobi world 13.

Emotional suppression is not always genuine emotional absence. Nonō and some other members retain feelings but conceal them because of Danzō’s authority and the Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal 144.

Recruitment and Training

• Forced recruitment: Danzō orders Osamu’s induction while he is five years old. Agents knock him unconscious and transport him underground 2.
• Identity erasure: Danzō renames Osamu “Mi” and uses physical intimidation to force him to accept the designation 2.
• Violent conditioning: Training includes isolation, hunger, whippings, and beatings; tears are forbidden 2.

History

Osamu’s Induction

Kato Yuan initially describes Root as an ANBU training camp but warns Osamu not to trust anyone there, to disguise his intentions, and above all to survive. Root agents subsequently seize Osamu, and Danzō begins stripping away his identity. Three years of training teach him to conceal his emotions behind apparent coldness 1 2 3.

After Osamu survives the Iron Prison trial, Orochimaru takes him as a subordinate. Danzō dismisses his Kato lineage as irrelevant, insisting that Dan Kato’s nephew is effectively dead and only a Root shinobi remains 4.

Wood Release Experiments

Osamu’s work under Orochimaru draws him into Root’s child-subject experiments. When the thirty-fifth subject becomes wood, Root terminates the project and summons him back to Danzō. Danzō restores his public Konoha identity but orders him to report unusual behavior by Orochimaru 9 13.

Orochimaru later reveals that he already considered the research unlikely to succeed. Osamu consequently suspects that his laboratory work was used to occupy Danzō and Root rather than achieve an immediate breakthrough 10.

Campaign Against Minato

Danzō first orders Osamu to sabotage an important mission and make Minato a war criminal. As Minato’s standing rises, the objective becomes assassination 19 60.

Root deploys to the Stone battlefield under the public justification of reinforcing Konoha. Its secret plan combines poisoning, chakra disruption, barriers, darkness techniques, and elemental attacks. Danzō also intends to exploit Minato’s trust in Osamu by having Osamu summon him for rescue 62 63 64.

False intelligence claims that Root’s base has been discovered, drawing Minato toward a prepared ambush. The operation fails when Osamu allies with Minato and turns on Root. Osamu defeats incoming ninjutsu with Ripple Impact and pursues Danzō, but Minato intervenes to prevent an immediate killing 71 73 75 76.

Replenishment and Dusk Forest Ambush

Danzō secretly recruits replacements after returning from the Land of Rain. Hiruzen knows about the recruitment but declines to intervene during wartime 128.

Nonō later warns Osamu that thirty Root jōnin await him near Konoha’s camp in Dusk Forest. Akihamaru reveals that the actual force comprises approximately fifty jōnin, nearly all of Root’s jōnin strength. Their stated demand is the cursed seal capable of countering Flying Thunder God 144 146.

Osamu neutralizes the force’s combined ninjutsu, passes through its barrier in an intangible state, and kills several attackers. Minato eventually orders the battle stopped. His confidential report exposes Root’s assassination attempt to Hiruzen, but Osamu and Orochimaru are subsequently designated S-rank rogue ninja 147 150 151.

Uchiha Extermination Plan

Following Shisui’s death, Hiruzen orders Kakashi to monitor Root more closely, but burns a proposed order suspending Danzō from his duties 215.

Danzō schedules the Uchiha massacre for three days later, threatening Sasuke to force Itachi’s cooperation. Root is ordered to verify every victim, recover their Sharingan, and prevent anyone from escaping. Unknown to Danzō, both Itachi and Yamakaze are involved in Osamu’s opposing plan 214 220.

On the appointed night, Danzō leads elite Root forces against the Konoha Security Department while Yamakaze’s contingent goes to the Uchiha compound. Inabi and Tekka record Root initiating the attack. Osamu then kills Danzō’s accompanying operatives and confronts their leader 221.

Defeat and Official Account

Setsuna orders Tekka to destroy Root’s garrison and eliminate its forces. The Uchiha use the recorded Security Department attack to present their own takeover as the lawful suppression of Danzō’s rebellion 224.

After Danzō and Hiruzen die, Setsuna becomes Fifth Hokage. The new government announces that Root’s rebellion has been crushed and blames Root for Hiruzen’s death and the Sarutobi Clan’s destruction. This is the official account, not a neutral description: the preceding events show Orochimaru attacking Hiruzen and Setsuna privately directing attacks on the Sarutobi and Shimura clans 224 230 233.
