Appearance
Minato is a blond-haired shinobi whose calm smile and gentle manner contrast with his fearsome battlefield reputation. He is associated with a white coat that younger shinobi attempt to emulate. 66 81
- Golden hair. 66
- Commonly carries specially marked Flying Thunder God kunai. 22 148
- Wore Hokage attire after assuming office. 152 191
Personality
Minato is warm, modest, and instinctively protective of younger shinobi. He accepts Kato Osamu as a junior brother through their shared teacher-student lineage, treats him with patience despite his guarded behavior, and consistently urges his students to protect themselves. 16 21 70
His kindness is not naïveté. Minato notices Kato's defensiveness, recognizes the danger posed by Root and Danzō, and makes calculated wartime decisions, including placing covert protection around Kakashi, Obito, and Rin when they are used as bait. 36 71 He nonetheless retains an unusually strong faith in people, defending Osamu's character even when Jiraiya warns that Root may have placed him as a spy. 35
As Hokage, Minato places Konoha's survival above his own life. Grief and anger briefly overwhelm him after learning that Obito and Osamu participated in the attack on Kushina, but he regains his resolve and returns to save the village from the Nine-Tails. 157 158
Abilities & Skills
Flying Thunder God Technique
Minato's signature space-time ninjutsu allows him to teleport to specially prepared kunai and formulae in flashes of golden light. Its speed makes his presence a psychological weapon; Cloud Shinobi retreat when he appears. 22 28
- Rapidly deploys marked kunai across a battlefield to move between targets and eliminate enemies. 28
- Matched A's lightning-enhanced speed, using teleportation to evade attacks and create openings for Rasengan strikes. 29 30
- Teleported Osamu, Obito, and Rin out of the path of an Eight-Tails Tailed Beast Ball. 33
- Can be disrupted by a Cursed Seal that interferes with his chakra pathways and contaminates his marked formulae. 73 148
Rasengan and Combat Ninjutsu
Minato combines the Rasengan with extreme mobility, Shadow Clones, and precise timing rather than overwhelming elemental destruction.
- Used Shadow Clones and a three-sided Rasengan assault to breach A's Lightning Release: Strongest Armor. 29
- Employed Big Ball Rasengan and Earth Release while his Flying Thunder God was sealed during Root's assassination attempt. 73
- Uses close-quarters combat effectively when both he and an opponent are low on chakra. 30
- Can perform healing techniques on his own injuries. 148
Toad Summoning
Minato can summon Gamabunta, Gamahiro, and Gamaken for large-scale combat.
- Called all three giant toads to restrain the Eight-Tails while he confronted A. 29
- Summoned them again to pin down the weakened Nine-Tails long enough to complete its sealing. 159
- Their combined strength can delay a tailed beast, but cannot fully overpower one for long. 29 159
Sealing Techniques
Minato is highly proficient in sealing arts, both through the Flying Thunder God formulae and through advanced tailed-beast seals.
- Used the Dead Demon Consuming Seal and Eight Trigrams Seal during the Nine-Tails Rebellion. 159
- Sealed half of the Nine-Tails' Yang chakra into his newborn son, Naruto. 159
- Intended to seal the remaining Yin chakra within himself, but Kato Osamu intercepted part of it before the process was completed. 159
Battlefield Command
Minato is an effective field commander who balances strategic objectives with concern for his subordinates.
- Established Kakashi as vice-captain and instructed his younger team members to function together whenever he was absent. 21
- Identified Kannabi Bridge as the Stone Shinobi front's decisive logistical target and organized an infiltration mission around its destruction. 70
- Entrusted Fugaku Uchiha with battlefield command during a feint while secretly arranging protection for Kakashi, Obito, and Rin. 71
- Coordinated with Kato Xu against Ōnoki, pairing Xu's soul-targeting blade with a teleportation-assisted Rasengan attack. 66

Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Mentorship and the Cloud Shinobi Front
Hiruzen assigns Kato Osamu to study foundational techniques under Minato, citing their connection through Jiraiya and Orochimaru. Minato accepts Osamu as his junior brother and begins integrating him into his circle. 16
During the Cloud Shinobi campaign, Minato leads Osamu, Obito, and Rin into war and appoints Kakashi as their vice-captain. He warns the group that he cannot always protect them personally, establishing their need to act as a team. 21
At Cangju Mountain, Minato's Yellow Flash reputation drives Cloud forces into retreat, but the enemy sets a mass ambush for him and his students. He deploys Flying Thunder God kunai throughout the forest, kills numerous Cloud shinobi, defeats A with a coordinated Rasengan assault, and summons giant toads to restrain the Eight-Tails. 28 29
Though A prevents him from immediately reaching his students, Minato responds without hesitation to Osamu's warning about the Eight-Tails' Tailed Beast Ball and teleports Osamu, Obito, and Rin to safety. 33 His victory alongside Jiraiya elevates his reputation throughout Konoha and the wider shinobi world. 37 46
Rise as a Hokage Candidate
Jiraiya declares his intention to nominate Minato as Fourth Hokage, recognizing that Danzō's placement of Osamu near Minato may reflect fear of Minato's growing influence. Minato rejects Jiraiya's suspicion of Osamu and insists on trusting his junior brother. 35
Minato later promotes Osamu directly from Genin to Special Jonin through a joint recommendation with Jiraiya, choosing recognition and mentorship over interrogation of Osamu's secret techniques. 36
His victories on the Stone Shinobi battlefield, particularly alongside the Uchiha Clan, make him Konoha's leading Hokage candidate. Hiruzen subsequently shifts political support away from Orochimaru and toward Minato. 128
Stone Shinobi Campaign and Root's Betrayal
Minato cooperates with Kato Xu during an unexpected confrontation with Ōnoki. Their combined assault forces the Tsuchikage to withdraw, though the battle exposes Minato's weakness in direct contests of large-scale destructive ninjutsu. 66
Danzō later lures Minato into a Root ambush using false intelligence and a Cursed Seal designed to suppress the Flying Thunder God. Minato is wounded while fighting without his signature technique, but ultimately escapes the Four Violet Flames Formation and recognizes the deeper conflict between clan interests and Konoha's unity. 73 74
Conflict with Osamu and Appointment as Fourth Hokage
Minato witnesses Root attempt to ambush Osamu in Dusk Forest and intervenes after Osamu exposes their plan to obtain an anti–Flying Thunder God Cursed Seal. He kills Root leader Xun to halt further bloodshed and orders the surviving operatives to report Danzō's actions to Hiruzen. 146 148
Osamu then uses the Cursed Seal to disable Minato's Flying Thunder God and beats him for failing Obito and Rin. Minato accepts the punishment without excuses; afterward, Osamu returns Rin's body to him and announces that he can no longer remain in Konoha. 148 149
Following the Third Shinobi World War, Minato officially becomes the Fourth Hokage. 152
Nine-Tails Rebellion and Death
When Obito and Osamu confront Minato with the dying Kushina after the Nine-Tails' extraction, Minato is devastated by their betrayal. He cannot overcome Osamu's perfected spirit-form intangibility, but abandons the fight once he recognizes that Konoha is under attack. 157
Minato arrives in Konoha in time to remove the Nine-Tails from the village's immediate vicinity. He reveals his intent to use Naruto as the new jinchūriki and prepares for a fatal sealing. 158
With the aid of Gamabunta, Gamaken, and Gamahiro, Minato restrains the Nine-Tails and seals half its chakra into Naruto. Kato's intervention prevents Minato from fully taking the remaining half into himself, but the Dead Demon Consuming Seal still claims Minato's life. He dies beside Naruto at dawn. 159
Reanimation and Final Destruction
Minato is later resurrected through Impure World Reincarnation alongside Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju. Before he can act further, Kato Osamu destroys his reanimated body and absorbs his soul with a black longsword. 191
