Background / History

Lin Qiang is Class Two’s initial class monitor. During Wang Hu’s public bullying of Chen Yan, he makes a limited attempt to defuse the situation by urging Wang Hu to tolerate the seating arrangement until it changes, but does not directly confront him 5.

He remains class monitor through the first semester, handling class funds and party preparations. While shopping for the New Year’s Day party, he loses both the class funds and his own money; Su Yan covers the shortfall with 300 yuan and tells him not to rush repayment 25 26. Chen Wanwan later reports the incident to Teacher Ma, leaving Lin Qiang angry but unwilling to confront her because of her family’s influence 31.

During winter vacation, Lin Qiang accepts Su Yan’s offer of work at the fruit shop for fifty yuan per day. He proves capable at sales, weighing fruit, accounting, and handling payments, while his father promotes the shop among relatives and friends 33 34. He later helps recruit Chen Yan as a worker and works alongside her through the holiday season 34.

Personality

Lin Qiang is cheerful, talkative, and socially direct. He readily chats about school gossip, current events, classmates, and romance, contrasting with Su Yan’s reserved nature 22 23.

He is frugal and takes his responsibilities seriously, but can be careless under pressure. His lengthy comparison-shopping for inexpensive party fruit reflects his thrift, while the loss of the class funds leaves him deeply ashamed 25 26.

He is also loyal and practical. He supports Su Yan after robberies, bicycle vandalism, and the assault by Wan Xing’s group, while recognizing that continued conflict would endanger Su Yan’s studies 33 39 42. Though initially blunt about Chen Yan’s quietness and limitations, he ultimately encourages her work, recognizes her changes, and supports her appointment as Youth League secretary 34 35 44.
