Background / History
Lance is a remnant descendant of the Dragon Tamer lineage. He inherited Dragon Force, a power that lets him calm and influence Dragon-type Pokémon, but its initially incomplete state rapidly depleted his stamina. Before visiting the Origin Internet Café, he used it to suppress Dragonite’s berserk episodes at great personal cost. 25
As a Pokémon League investigator, Lance has repeatedly pursued Team Rocket only to arrive after its members have escaped. Suspecting an informant inside the League and lacking reliable intelligence, he accepts Cynthia’s invitation to investigate the Origin Internet Café after she reveals that its game contains information about the newly formed Team Aqua. 18
His ace Dragonite possesses an unusual bloodline, exceptional strength, and a powerful inherited move later identified as Outrage. Lance had long believed Dragonite’s recurring rampages were an unexplained bloodline defect, until Luo Chen recognizes the move’s confusion side effect and cures it with a Lum Berry. 25 33
Appearance
Lance is a red-haired man known for his distinctive cape, which livestream viewers repeatedly mistake for a costume accessory. 27 41
- Red hair 41
- Wears a cape associated with his public Elite Four image 27
- Carries official Pokémon League investigator identification 27
- Commonly travels by riding Dragonite 25 33
Personality
Lance is proud, blunt, and intensely attached to his identity as a Dragon-type specialist. He reacts especially badly to viewers calling him a “Flying-type Champion,” despite acknowledging that much of his team can fly. 28
His confidence can become stubbornness. While playing Ultimate Emerald, he initially refuses to use non-Dragon Pokémon even when Treecko is repeatedly disadvantaged, believing Dragons are “the strongest and the most worthy of training.” He eventually accepts temporary non-Dragon teammates rather than lower the game’s difficulty. 29 31
Despite his arrogance, Lance is responsible and compassionate toward Dragonite. He exhausts himself stabilizing its condition, seeks treatment for its berserk episodes, and immediately acts when the game reveals credible intelligence about Team Aqua. 25 33 40
Abilities & Skills
Dragon Force
A hereditary Dragon Tamer power connected to Lance’s fading lineage.
- Originally allowed him to faintly sense nearby Dragon-type Pokémon and temporarily suppress Dragonite’s berserk state. 25
- Before enhancement, using it for only several seconds could nearly drain all of his strength. 25
- After exposure to the triangular stone, it becomes vastly more abundant and sustainable. 26 39
- Its enhanced sensing can identify Dragon Pokémon’s location, appearance, aura, and movements from hundreds of meters away. 26
Dragon-Type Training
Lance is an Elite Four-level Dragon specialist and considers Dragon Pokémon the core of his identity.
- Has trained Dragonite since it was a Dratini and formed a hard-won partnership with its unusually aggressive temperament. 32
- Understands Dragonite’s strength and danger well enough to recognize when its condition is becoming unstable. 25 32
- Gains improved natural affinity with Dragon Pokémon through Dragon Mark. 32
- His devotion can impair his game strategy, as he initially restricts himself to Dragon-types or Pokémon that may later become Dragon-type. 29 32
Investigation and Command
Lance is a senior League investigator capable of acting on incomplete but credible intelligence.
- Suspects Team Rocket has access to a League informant after multiple operations fail. 18
- Recognizes Team Aqua’s emblem from classified League intelligence while playing the game. 30
- Confirms that Archie matches a supposedly dead Hoenn radical, places him on the highest-priority wanted list, and orders surveillance of Slateport shipyards and the Oceanic Museum. 40 41
Game Battling
Lance learns Ultimate Emerald quickly but initially underestimates Insane Mode.
- Selects Treecko because Luo Chen tells him it can eventually gain Dragon typing through Mega Evolution. 28
- Trains Treecko from level 5 to level 10 after losing to a roadside Trainer, unlocking Giga Drain and Quick Attack. 29
- Learns that levels, status conditions, dual typings, held items, and team composition can overturn simple type advantages. 29 31
- Receives a Dragon-type Egg through Dragon Mark; it ultimately hatches into an Applin. 49
Equipment / Items
- Pokémon League investigator identification — Official Kanto League ID bearing his name, photograph, identification number, and League seal. 27
- Dragon Scale — An exceptionally large scale given to him by Gengar after it gains Pickup; Lance considers it worth nearly a year of salary. 26 27
- Lum Berries — Given by Luo Chen as treatment for Dragonite’s Outrage-induced confusion. 33
- Dragon Mark — Internet-café reward that improves Dragon affinity and provides a Dragon-type Egg during his next game session. 32
Relationships
- Dragonite — Lance’s ace and longtime partner. Dragonite’s inherited Outrage caused recurring berserk episodes until Luo Chen identified and treated the condition; they later work together to use Outrage safely. 25 33 39
- Cynthia — Fellow Champion and the person who introduces him to the Origin Internet Café. They cooperate over Team Aqua intelligence while competing over their game progress. 18 39 41
- Luo Chen — Origin Internet Café owner and benefactor. Luo Chen strengthens Lance’s Dragon Force indirectly through the triangular stone, provides Dragonite’s treatment, and earns Lance’s sincere gratitude. 26 33 39
- Gengar — Luo Chen’s white Gengar employee. Its Pickup Ability produces the Dragon Scale that it casually gives to Lance. 26 27
- Iono — A Gym Leader from a parallel world whose historical records portray another Lance as a League traitor and Team Rocket criminal, leaving her fearful of him. 41 42
- Livestream viewers — His frequent mockers and occasional guides. They repeatedly call him a Flying-type Champion, prank him over his Pokémon Egg, and challenge his Dragon-only playstyle. 28 29 49
Story Role / Major Arcs
Origin Internet Café Visit
After Cynthia tells him that the café’s game contains Team Aqua information unknown to almost everyone in League law enforcement, Lance travels to Mount Coronet to investigate. Though initially suspicious of the rundown exterior, the strange Gengar livestream, and Luo Chen, he becomes convinced after the triangular stone dramatically enhances his Dragon Force. 18 25 26
Dragonite’s Outrage
Lance releases Dragonite at Luo Chen’s request, but its lingering Outrage confusion triggers a berserk attack inside the café. The café’s protection blocks the strike, and Luo Chen diagnoses the condition as Outrage rather than a mysterious bloodline disorder. Lum Berries give Lance a practical way to prevent future rampages. 32 33
*Ultimate Emerald* and Insane Mode
Lance begins playing Ultimate Emerald to investigate Team Rocket and is livestreamed automatically. His insistence on Dragon-types, Treecko’s early losses, and Roxanne’s Archen repeatedly challenge his pride, but he refuses to lower the difficulty and gradually accepts the need for more flexible tactics. 27 32
Team Aqua Investigation
Watching Cynthia’s game progression, Lance learns that Team Aqua intends to flood the continent and identifies its leader as Archie. After verifying that Archie is a real Hoenn man officially believed dead, he mobilizes the Pokémon League to monitor likely Team Aqua targets. 40 41
Dragon-Type Egg
Lance eagerly receives the Dragon-type Egg promised by Dragon Mark, briefly falls for a chat prank telling him to release it, and eventually hatches it by walking around Rustboro City. The supposedly random Dragon-type Egg produces an Applin, leaving him bewildered by its apple-like appearance. 49
Notable Quotes
“Everyone, I’m the Dragon-type Champion! Not the Flying-type Champion.” 28
“I only want Dragon-type Pokémon. Dragons are the strongest and the most worthy of training.” 29
Trivia
- Lance’s livestream viewers refuse to believe his official League identification is real and instead praise it as a convincing prop. 27
- He is especially irritated by the “Flying-type Champion” label because his Dragonite, Salamence, Charizard, and former Pidgeot all give the accusation some basis. 28
- He arrives at the café early enough to consider himself exceptionally punctual, only to discover Cynthia has already waited outside for three hours. 38 39
- In Iono’s world, historical records claim a version of Lance lived two hundred years ago, betrayed the League, joined Team Rocket, and was defeated by multiple Champions. 41 42
