Chapters 1–25 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 1Duckweed

Shuichi, a starving amnesiac in North 79th District, awakened powerful Reiatsu when he took up an abandoned Asauchi. After Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto recruited him as a reserve member of the Gotei 13, Shuichi settled into a new residence and wondered why it felt familiar.

  • Shuichi found a rusted Asauchi and awakened his dormant Reiatsu, causing a destructive rampage before he collapsed.
  • Shuichi awoke in the First Division Barracks, where Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto explained that his uncontrolled Reiatsu had caused the destruction.
  • Shuichi told Yamamoto his name and admitted that he could not remember his life before arriving in Soul Society.
  • Yamamoto offered Shuichi a place as a Gotei 13 reserve member, and Shuichi accepted rather than return to the wilderness.
  • Shuichi moved into a small courtyard residence in West Rukongai and felt that the place seemed strangely familiar.

Ch. 2Genji School

Shuichi began training at Genji School, where Chōjirō Sasakibe taught him the foundations of Soul Reaper combat and Reiatsu control. After Shuichi’s test revealed Second-Class Spiritual Might, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto took over his training, leaving him practicing how to keep a candle flame steady with Reiatsu.

  • Chōjirō Sasakibe brought Shuichi to Genji School, where Shuichi joined the students and learned the basics of Zanjutsu, Shunpo, Hakuda, and Kidō.
  • Sasakibe taught Shuichi to sense and guide his Reiatsu, and Shuichi cracked a practice stone when his power surged.
  • Chōjirō Sasakibe took Shuichi to the Spiritual Might Test, where Shuichi released Reiatsu through a pillar that lit up to its nineteenth ring.
  • Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto identified Shuichi’s result as Second-Class Spiritual Might and decided to personally teach him Reiatsu control.
  • At dawn, Yamamoto taught Shuichi to feed Reiatsu into a candle, and Shuichi managed to keep its small flame burning steadily before exhausting himself.

Ch. 3Rumors

Shuichi trained in Reiatsu control and the four Soul Reaper fundamentals under Yamamoto and Sasakibe, while three of the Four Great Noble Clans approached him after his personal instruction became a public signal of Yamamoto’s favor. The Shihōin representative offered friendship instead of a gift, leaving Shuichi unsure what to make of the noble clans’ interest.

  • Yamamoto had Shuichi practice feeding Reiatsu steadily into a candle, then gave him a stone to fill without cracking.
  • Sasakibe taught Shuichi Zanjutsu, Shunpo, Hakuda, and Kidō, and Shuichi gradually improved through repeated practice.
  • Tsunayashiro Shisei offered Shuichi spirit stones, but Shuichi refused the gift and sensed danger in the encounter.
  • Kuchiki Seigen brought Shuichi a wooden box as a gift, but Shuichi refused it, and Seigen accepted his decision.
  • Shuichi realized that Yamamoto and Sasakibe’s personal instruction marked him as one of Yamamoto’s own to the noble clans.
  • Shihoin Yeming met Shuichi near the south gate, said she wanted to make friends rather than invest in him, and left without pressing him.

Ch. 4Kenpachi

Shuichi trained with Yachiru Unohana, who tested his swordsmanship by attacking him and teaching him forgotten styles. After he chose to pursue swordsmanship for survival rather than follow one school, Unohana trained him for a month and left him to continue on his own.

  • Sasakibe introduced Yachiru Unohana as Shuichi’s Zanjutsu instructor, and she tested him with a sudden attack that he survived before enduring fifteen strikes.
  • Shuichi returned the next day, and Unohana continued testing him, noticing his instinctive swordsmanship and learning that he had no memory of using a sword before Seireitei.
  • Over several days, Unohana taught Shuichi forgotten sword styles, including Spider Slash, Ironstone Style, Water-Moon Style, Mist Slash, and Bone-Cut, and explained that she remembered them rather than learned them.
  • When Unohana asked Shuichi to choose a style, he said he wanted swordsmanship for surviving, and she smiled before sparring with him using no school or embellishment.
  • Unohana trained Shuichi for several more days, then told him she had taught him all she could and left, while Shuichi carried her lessons into his own swordsmanship.

Ch. 5Sword Meditation

After two years of training, Shuichi completed Yamamoto’s Reiatsu-control lessons and began Sword Meditation, learning to wait patiently for his Zanpakutō instead of searching for it. Yamamoto declared he had taught Shuichi all he could, and Chōjirō Sasakibe confirmed Shuichi had graduated in Zan-Sō-Haku-Ki, leaving him eligible to take the Soul Reaper qualification exam.

  • Shuichi spent three months filling a boulder with Reiatsu, after which Yamamoto ended his Reiatsu-control practice and assigned him Sword Meditation.
  • Shuichi meditated for months without finding his Zanpakutō, until Yamamoto explained that he should wait rather than search for it.
  • In the fourth month, Yamamoto told Shuichi he had taken his first step in Sword Meditation and could apply for the Soul Reaper qualification exam.
  • Shuichi asked to join the First Division after passing the exam, and Yamamoto said he would not object.
  • Shuichi demonstrated his Zanjutsu, Flash Step, Hakuda, and Kidō to Chōjirō Sasakibe, who declared that he had graduated.

Ch. 6Joining the division

Shuichi passed the Soul Reaper qualification exam and faced recruitment efforts from the Tsunayashiro, Shihōin, and Kuchiki clans. He chose to join the First Division, where Yamamoto appointed him an official member and assigned him to learn headquarters security work.

  • Shuichi passed every exam section and defeated a simulated Hollow, earning Yamamoto's sealed approval as an official Soul Reaper.
  • Tsunayashiro Shisei urged Shuichi to join the Twelfth Division, while Shihōin Qianri warned him against the clan's influence and invited him to the Second Division.
  • Kuchiki Seigen told Shuichi the Kuchiki Clan would support whichever division he chose and respected his right to decide for himself.
  • Shuichi reported to Yamamoto and chose the First Division, explaining that he wanted to repay the Commander-in-Chief for his help and training.
  • Yamamoto accepted Shuichi into the First Division, and Okiba Genshirō introduced him to the other members and assigned him to sort patrol reports.

Ch. 7Tentacles

Shuichi collected his standard equipment from the Kasumioji Clan and learned more about the noble and commercial families influencing Seireitei. Meanwhile, Shihōin Qianri proposed turning the Second Division into the Onmitsukidō, and Yamamoto asked him to submit a formal report before deciding.

  • Chongya accompanied Shuichi to the Kasumioji Estate, explaining the Kasumioji Clan's ties to the Kuchiki Clan and the Ōmaeda Clan's financial role in the Gotei 13.
  • Kasumioji Genmei welcomed Shuichi and provided his uniform, protective gear, Reishi Communicator, and maintenance tools.
  • Sakaki gave Shuichi his pay statement, and Chongya explained that the Ōmaeda Clan avoided recruitment and factional politics.
  • Shimura showed Shuichi Ōmaeda Xiquanzhi's application to become a lieutenant in Shihōin Qianri's Second Division, and Shuichi placed it in the pending-file stack.
  • Shihōin Qianri presented Yamamoto with a plan to reorganize the Second Division as the Onmitsukidō, with units for reconnaissance, intelligence, assassination, protection, and interrogation.
  • Yamamoto told Shihōin Qianri to submit a formal report, while Sasakibe warned that the division lacked trained personnel and might face opposition from other captains.

Ch. 8The mission

Yamamoto rejected Shihōin Qianri’s plan to give the Second Division a torture-interrogation unit, while Qianri continued revising the proposal over three months. Shuichi led an investigation in South District 47, where he discovered signs that several Hollows had been annihilated by Quincies, and ordered the team to report back.

  • Yamamoto refused to let Shihōin Qianri establish an interrogation unit in the Second Division and told him to revise the proposal.
  • Over the next three months, Shihōin Qianri repeatedly brought revised plans to Yamamoto as the Second Division gradually changed.
  • Chōjirō Sasakibe assigned Shuichi to lead three Eighth Division members in investigating erratic Reiatsu in South District 47.
  • Shuichi determined that the scattered Reiatsu traces belonged to wounded Hollows fleeing through the district.
  • Shuichi found scorch marks where Reiatsu had been abruptly annihilated, identified the culprit as Quincies, and ordered the team to report the discovery and return.

Ch. 9Shin'ō Central 46

Shuichi reported evidence of an organized Quincy campaign in Rukongai, and Yamamoto warned Shin'ō Central 46 that their large-scale Hollow killings threatened Soul Society’s Reishi Cycle. Central 46 approved a resolution ordering the Gotei 13 to expel or detain the Quincy, killing those who resisted, and Yamamoto called the divisions to assemble.

  • Shuichi told Yamamoto and the captains that a sizable Quincy force had operated in South District 47, as reports showed Quincy activity increasing across Rukongai.
  • Yamamoto presented forty-six reports to Shin'ō Central 46 and explained that Quincy destruction of Hollows removed reishi from Soul Society’s cycle.
  • Yamamoto proposed deploying the Gotei 13 to clear the Quincy from Rukongai, and Central 46 voted to approve the operation.
  • Tsunayashiro Shiki, Shihōin Qianri, and Kuchiki Ginrei voted in favor, while Shiba Chuanlu abstained and urged Yamamoto to spare human Quincy where possible.
  • Central 46 ordered the Quincy expelled or detained, with those who refused to comply to be killed, and Yamamoto instructed Chōjirō Sasakibe to summon all thirteen divisions.

Ch. 10Departure

Yamamoto ordered the Gotei 13 to eradicate Quincy activity within one month and assigned Shuichi to find the Quincy base in the west without engaging it. Shuichi departed with Chōjirō, Shiba Chuanlu, and noble forces, leaving the cleared districts behind as they headed into the western wasteland.

  • Yamamoto assigned the divisions to clear Quincy activity across Rukongai and the World of the Living, and ordered Shuichi to locate the western Quincy base with Chōjirō.
  • Shuichi met Shiba Chuanlu, Kuchiki Clan representatives, and Ryouka Hachi at the West Gate before their group departed.
  • Shuichi traveled west with Chōjirō, Shiba Chuanlu, and the noble forces, sensing Soul Reapers fighting throughout Rukongai.
  • Shuichi noticed an old boundary marker labeled East Branch District, and Shiba Chuanlu explained that it was Rukongai’s former name.
  • Shuichi sensed Bakuzan Katori fighting far ahead as the group crossed beyond West Eightieth District and continued into the western wasteland.

Ch. 11Quincy

Shuichi and the Shinigami crossed into Quincy territory, fought Reishi Armament troops, and then faced a Quincy army led by Sternritter Johnsen Kreuzitis. As Shiba Chuanlu battled Johnsen, the blond adjutant ordered the Holy Soldiers to attack, and Chōjirō used Gonryōmaru’s Bankai to stop their first arrow volley.

  • Shuichi’s group crossed a river into Quincy territory and sensed a village filled with spiritual pressure.
  • Shiba Chuanlu ordered the group to engage gray-uniformed fighters, and Shuichi discovered most wielded Reishi Armament rather than Quincy power.
  • Chōjirō, Shuichi, the Kuchiki Clan, and the Hachi Clan defeated the gray-uniformed force, killing more than forty and suffering several injuries.
  • A Quincy army appeared, and Johnsen Kreuzitis identified himself as a Sternritter before fighting Shiba Chuanlu at a distance.
  • The blond adjutant ordered the Holy Soldiers to fire hundreds of Reishi arrows at Shuichi’s group.
  • Chōjirō unleashed Gonryōmaru’s Bankai, Kōkō Gonryō Rikyū, to consume the arrow volley, then sent a lightning bolt at the adjutant, who blocked it.

Ch. 12Shikai

Shiba Chuanlu released his Shikai and forced Johnson to flee, while Shuichi awakened his Zanpakutō during a dangerous battle trance and severed the blond adjutant’s arm. After Johnson’s retreat prompted the Quincy forces to withdraw, Shuichi remained facing the wounded adjutant.

  • Shiba Chuanlu released his Shikai, summoning three giant birds that overwhelmed Johnson and drove him onto the defensive.
  • The blond adjutant attacked Shuichi as Chōjirō and Ryouka Hachi helped the Kuchiki Clan retreat from the battlefield.
  • Shuichi sank into dangerous Sword Meditation and fought by instinct until his Zanpakutō revealed its name, Heaven of the Other Shore.
  • Shuichi’s released Zanpakutō sent a red sword aura through the adjutant’s left arm and severed it.
  • Shiba Chuanlu struck Johnson with Hado #63: Raikōhō, but Johnson escaped by concealing his Reiatsu.
  • The adjutant recognized Johnson’s retreat signal and led the Holy Soldiers west, leaving Shuichi on the battlefield with him.

Ch. 13Intelligence

After defeating the Quincy at a battlefield, Shuichi discovered his Zanpakutō had entered a state that might be Permanent Shikai. The group advanced west, destroyed a Quincy fortress, and seized intelligence before wounded survivors regrouped and set out to report what they had learned.

  • Shuichi collapsed from exhaustion after the battle, and Chōjirō and Shiba Chuanlu noticed his Zanpakutō remained in Shikai and could not be dismissed.
  • Ryouka Hachi and Hiro Kuchiki reported their casualties, received orders to deliver intelligence and purify the dead, then led their groups away.
  • Shiba Chuanlu, Chōjirō, and Shuichi rested before continuing west and finding a guarded Quincy fortress.
  • Shiba used Bankai to demolish the fortress and its defenses, then the three Shinigami searched the ruins and seized rosters, maps, and battle plans mentioning Jugram Haschwalth and His Majesty.
  • After the Shinigami left, injured Quincy squad leaders emerged from the ruins, assessed their losses, and resolved to remember the attackers as they led the survivors west.

Ch. 14Permanent Shikai

Yamamoto pieced together that the Quincy had been preparing an advance on the Seireitei, while Shuichi learned that his Zanpakutō’s permanently active Shikai required further understanding through Sword Meditation. The chapter ended with Kujo Shūi joining the First Division as a field operative.

  • Bakuzan Katori told Shiba Chuanlu, Chōjirō, and Shuichi that the Quincy had retreated from West Eightieth District and that the district had been cleared.
  • Yamamoto compared division reports and maps, concluding that the Quincy had established strongholds, studied Soul Society, and prepared routes for an advance.
  • Yamamoto told Shuichi that permanent Shikai was rare and advised him to practice Sword Meditation to understand his Zanpakutō and its abilities.
  • Kujo Shūi arrived at the First Division barracks, where Chongya introduced her as a new field operative and official member of the division.

Ch. 15High-Reishi Zone

Shuichi and his team traveled to Karakura Town to locate and destroy a Quincy base, but their reconnaissance was interrupted when three Large Hollows attacked the town. They watched the Quincy struggle against the Hollows until a powerful archer named Ishida intervened, leaving Shuichi to recognize him as a high-ranking threat.

  • Chojiro Sasakibe briefed Shuichi, Endo, Sakamoto, and Kujo Shūi on their mission to investigate and destroy the Quincy base in Karakura Town, with the Second Division on standby for support.
  • Shuichi and the others entered the World of the Living through the Senkaimon and located a Quincy compound with more than twenty Reishi signatures.
  • Three Large Hollows emerged from rifts above Karakura Town and attacked the streets while Shuichi's team watched from concealment.
  • The Reishi Armed Forces fought the Hollows, killing one through concentrated arrow fire but suffering casualties as the remaining two overwhelmed their formation.
  • Ishida arrived and destroyed the last two Hollows with Holy Arrows before the Quincy captain thanked him and Ishida returned to the compound.

Ch. 16No Incident

Shuichi and his companions questioned Ishida about the Quincy war, then reported his claims to Sasakibe, who sent them to rest. In Karakura Town, Xu Jian Tou secretly guarded the area, killing Hollows while keeping watch on Ishida and the Reishi Armed Forces.

  • Ishida told Shuichi that the Ishida Family would stay out of the war and that he used Holy Arrows only when necessary to protect Karakura Town.
  • Shuichi returned to Seireitei and reported Ishida’s statements to Sasakibe, who acknowledged the report and dismissed the group to rest.
  • Ishida sensed an unfamiliar Soul Reaper near the woods and watched as that presence repeatedly killed Hollows before his troops could assemble.
  • Ishida ordered the Reishi Armed Forces to continue their normal patrols and leave the Soul Reaper alone.
  • Xu Jian Tou revealed that Yamamoto had stationed him near Karakura Town to eliminate Hollows and monitor the Quincy without provoking them.

Ch. 17Yhwach

The Gotei divisions returned from their extermination operations, and Shuichi helped sort their reports, including a note about a large Quincy gathering in the North Sixty-Second District. Ichibē Hyōsube warned Yamamoto that Yhwach was coming and that, although Yamamoto could defeat him, he could not kill him.

  • The divisions returned to the Seireitei with reports detailing their routes, battles, casualties, and losses.
  • Shuichi sorted the reports and found Entetsu Kumenoi's note that a large Quincy gathering in the North Sixty-Second District had already withdrawn.
  • Ichibē Hyōsube told Yamamoto that Yhwach was coming, explained his power to grant and take Quincy abilities, and said he had sealed The Almighty.
  • Yamamoto declared he would kill Yhwach, but Ichibē told him he could defeat Yhwach without being able to kill him.
  • Ichibē offered Yamamoto a place in Zero Division, and Yamamoto refused.
  • Ichibē left a scroll bearing Yhwach's likeness on Yamamoto's desk.

Ch. 18East 30th District

Yamamoto tried to recruit Senjumaru Shutara to develop equipment for the Gotei 13, but she said she would think about it. Shuichi entered his Inner World during Sword Meditation, and Chojiro Sasakibe explained that his Zanpakutō had invited him inside.

  • Yamamoto urged Senjumaru Shutara to join the Gotei 13 and create equipment to help protect Soul Society, and she agreed to consider it.
  • Shuichi fell asleep during Sword Meditation and entered a sea of Red Spider Lilies, where a faceless figure invited him to play chess beside a small house.
  • Shuichi woke at dawn and went to the First Division Barracks to tell Chojiro Sasakibe about the dream.
  • Chojiro Sasakibe identified the place as Shuichi's Inner World and explained that the faceless figure was his Zanpakutō, which had invited him inside.

Ch. 19Ambush

Shuichi learned more of his Zanpakutō’s abilities in his Inner World just as the Quincy launched a surprise invasion of Seireitei. Yamamoto and the noble forces fought back, and Zenteiji Yūbin faced two Sternritter.

  • Shuichi met the hazy figure in his Inner World, who demonstrated four Zanpakutō abilities before sparring with him.
  • Blue Reishi pillars appeared across Seireitei, and Holy Soldiers poured from the shadows to attack Soul Reapers without warning.
  • Yamamoto recognized Yhwach’s invasion and left the First Division Barracks, unleashing Ryujin Jakka across Seireitei.
  • Noble armed forces defended their estates near the West Gate but suffered heavy losses to the Quincy forces.
  • Zenteiji Yūbin arrived and overwhelmed several Vice-Captain-Class Quincy with brutal hand-to-hand attacks.
  • Two Sternritter confronted Zenteiji, who released his Zanpakutō and declared, “Rend apart! Quake Calamity!”

Ch. 20Yachiru Unohana

Yachiru Unohana slaughtered the Quincy attacking the Eleventh Division and fought eighteen Sternritter until she was badly wounded. She released Bankai, Minazuki, and its spreading blood began dissolving the Sternritter, though they remained alive as skeletons.

  • Saizo Sakigane used Nightmare to defend the Thirteenth Division’s scattered barracks, but Bazz-B confronted him with a fireball.
  • Yachiru Unohana led the Eleventh Division’s counterattack and cut down the Holy Soldiers in South District Two.
  • Unohana sensed eighteen Sternritter approaching and charged them as they attacked her together.
  • Unohana was wounded by Schrift T, Schrift Q, and other Sternritter, but continued attacking and injured several of them.
  • Unohana released Bankai, Minazuki, flooding the street with blood that dissolved the Sternritter’s flesh while keeping them alive.

Ch. 21Fierce Battle

The Tenth, Ninth, and Eighth Division captains fought Quincy forces attacking their garrisons. Wang Tuchuan Yuxuji and Entetsu Kumenoi unleashed their Bankai against powerful opponents, while Bakuzan Katori killed Ilsa Florian and confronted Jost Weiss and the Dagger Squad.

  • Wang Tuchuan Yuxuji cut through Holy Soldiers with his Shikai before Erwin Brenner and Dietrich Schmidt injured him with a Reishi werewolf and dust explosions, prompting him to unleash Bankai.
  • Entetsu Kumenoi slaughtered Holy Soldiers with his Shikai, then used Bankai to neutralize Frida Bergmann's frost and Gerda Schwarz's shields as the two prepared to flee.
  • Bakuzan Katori killed Ilsa Florian with two long-range slashes from her Shikai.
  • Jost Weiss and the eight members of the Dagger Squad challenged Katori, who used Bankai to halt the air currents and Reishi before tearing the squad apart with compressed air blades.
  • Katori stood over the wounded Jost with her naginata at his throat.

Ch. 22Fierce Assault

Nobutsuna Shigyo defeated two Quincy in the Seventh Division grounds, while Furoufushi Saito faced Jugram Haschwalth and the Fifth Division struggled against Pernida Parnkgjas’s controlling threads. The battle left the Soul Reapers under pressure on every front, with Danjiro Obana unable to fight and the Fifth Division’s members turning against one another.

  • Nobutsuna Shigyo killed more than forty Holy Soldiers, then released her Shikai and split Lotte Fischer in half with one slash.
  • Nobutsuna Shigyo used her Bankai to find Natalie Klein in the shadows, and her sword-bearing guards pierced Natalie as she tried to flee.
  • Furoufushi Saito activated her Bankai and attacked Jugram Haschwalth, but he blocked her strikes and sent her flying in three exchanges.
  • Pernida Parnkgjas spread white threads across the Fifth Division grounds, controlling Soul Reapers and forcing them to fight their companions.
  • Danjiro Obana cut both his own ankles to stop Pernida Parnkgjas’s threads from controlling him, then directed a medic to treat his wounds while he remained unable to join the fight.

Ch. 23Lille Barro

Lille Barro sniped Shihōin Qianri and Chikiri Shijima from an observation tower while Yanyuan Jinle forced Paula Edema and Otto Fromm to retreat. Qianri escaped with a ruined left shoulder and continued into a besieged noble estate.

Ch. 24Casualties

Wang Tuchuan killed two Schrift bearers before Lille Barro shot through his chest, while Saizo Sakigane and Shandingsi were left in grave danger against Bazz-B and Gerard Valkyrie. Across the Seireitei, noble clans fought to defend their homes as the Ise Clan’s wounded Captain-Class son-in-law stood against overwhelming Quincy forces.

  • Wang Tuchuan used his Bankai to kill Erwin Brenner and Dietrich Schmidt, but Lille Barro shot him through the chest as he emerged from the darkness.

  • The Kuchiki, Tsunayashiro, Shiba, Shihōin, and Kyoraku Clans defended their manors against Quincy attacks, while the Ise Clan’s wounded Captain-Class son-in-law kept fighting to protect his family.

Ch. 25The Sword of Blazing Fire

Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto unleashed Bankai and, with Chōjirō Sasakibe’s help, struck down Yhwach in a devastating blaze. Shuichi awoke to the burning Seireitei and rushed to protect the injured Furoufushi Saito, attacking the Quincy who was closing in on her.
