The Allied Forces Held All the Cards
"Rustle!" A man wearing the blue-and-white uniform of the Allied Forces, with an insignia of a small sun on his shoulder and two golden wheat stalks beneath it, entered the command post carrying documents. When he saw the slender figure draped in a lieutenant general's coat, quietly asleep over the sand table—
A trace of difficulty flashed through his eyes.
But considering the importance of the mission, after hesitating for a moment, he still took a deep breath and prepared to step forward and wake this respected superior.
Yet before he could act, the woman lying over the desk seemed to sense something. Her steady breathing abruptly caught, and she slowly raised her head.
As she moved, her long golden hair cascaded down, revealing a face so thin she could almost have been called malnourished.
Perhaps because she was often unable to get enough sleep, there were heavy dark circles around her eyes, impossible to ignore.
Her azure eyes, bloodshot throughout, stared blankly ahead for a moment before swiftly regaining focus.
She covered her mouth and yawned, patting her numb face as she tried to wake herself up. In a weary voice, she asked,
"Ha... Is it afternoon already, Major Dillion? How long did I sleep this time?"
"You rested for a total of three hours this time, Lieutenant General Roxy."
"Three hours? What a terrible sleeping experience. By the way, what the hell are those people from the 3rd and 6th Legions doing? Can't they just finish off that damned old Empire bastard already, end this disgusting war, and let me get some proper rest? What a bunch of trash!"
"And that piece of shit Dormammu too. Wouldn't it be nice to just surrender obediently? Why insist on adding to my workload? This is pissing me off!"
Roxy Sankaster irritably scratched her hair, but quickly calmed down. Her gaze shifted to the documents in Dillion's hands, and her eyes narrowed slightly.
"So, what emergency is it this time?"
"This is intelligence just sent over by our agents. It seems the White-Haired Demon General has made a new move. General Orco asked me to bring it to you for review."
Dillion silently handed over the document. Then, he picked up a cup from nearby, tore open a packet of loose medicine, and skillfully used a kettle of warm water to prepare a cup of magic stimulant for his superior, carefully setting it before her.
"..."
Roxy drank from the cup as she reviewed the document in her hands.
When she saw the first half of its contents, the corners of her mouth could not help curling into a faint smile.
Because everything had unfolded completely within her grasp.
Whether that suicide squad would be intercepted by the Empire, or whether the Empire would torture the so-called deployment location of the Anti-Magic Device out of that failed team and decipher it to find the so-called "true location"—all of it had been within her expectations.
As long as Dormammu took the bait, then under her arrangements, the Black Eagle Special Forces he was so proud of would surely be utterly destroyed in this trap.
By then, having lost their strongest reconnaissance unit, the Empire would be like a man blinded in one eye on the battlefield of Walden.
At that point, she could further shatter the Empire's defensive line and allow the Allied Forces to seize complete victory in the Battle of Walden!
But when she saw the name of the person in charge mentioned in the intelligence, Roxy could not help knitting her brows slightly.
It was not that the man Dormammu had sent was particularly famous. Quite the contrary—he had never shown the slightest talent within the Imperial army.
Yet as someone who had crossed blades with the White-Haired Demon General several times, Roxy knew better than anyone just how troublesome and cunning this old Imperial general was. So, was this unit bait?
Or did this Imperial upstart named John Maslow possess some unknown ability?
It had to be said, this feeling of something falling outside her expectations did make her somewhat uneasy.
Roxy frowned in thought. Only after a long while did she slowly place the document on the table and ask Dillion, who stood at the side,
"Has the bait plan been arranged?"
"Following your orders, bait devices have been set up at the ambush site five kilometers away from the Anti-Magic Device array. The 3rd Legion's 'Iron Wall' special forces will handle this ambush. As long as the Empire's Black Eagle Special Forces enter the designated area, with the Speed Interference Field established in advance, we will absolutely be able to wipe them out to the last man."
Dillion answered in a deep voice. Yet when he noticed that, after hearing his report, the brows of his nominal superior had not relaxed but instead drawn even tighter, his heart sank.
"Lieutenant General Roxy, has something gone wrong with the plan?"
"No. That old bastard Dormammu's reaction was within my expectations, and as expected, he took the bait this time as well. It's just that I'm somewhat concerned about the person he sent."
Roxy waved a hand. Her clear blue eyes studied the name on the intelligence report. After pondering for a while, she finally said,
"Dillion, arrange for the communications department to remind Lieutenant General Morgan. Tell him he'd better temporarily send one... no, two combat units over to assist, in case any unforeseen changes arise."
"I'll send someone to contact the 3rd Legion immediately. Also, do you have any other orders, Lieutenant General Roxy?"
"Actually, I do. Tell the cooks to make me something to eat. I'm a little hungry."
"Understood."
"Tap, tap!"
Inside the command post, Roxy watched Dillion's hurriedly departing figure, and the smile on her face gradually faded.
She propped her cheek with her right hand. Her blue eyes lowered, her gaze slowly moving forward from the red pieces representing her own side on the sand table.
It passed over the Empire's black pieces, a lone army deep behind enemy lines, now being jointly attacked by three of her side's legions and barely holding on for an entire month.
Until it reached the empty chair at the far end of the sand table.
It was as if she could already see a certain Imperial general with the eyes of an eagle and the bearing of a wolf being devoured clean by those foolish Imperial nobles after this defeat, forced onto the executioner's block, and beheaded by the falling blade amid the jeers and spit of the people.
A playful smile appeared on her pale, almost sickly face. Then she stretched lazily and murmured with a touch of sentiment,
"Well, that's one more decent opponent gone. It's somewhat... regrettable."
