| Occupation/Role | Imperial General; commander of the Seventh Air Force and supreme frontline commander of the Walden War Zone |
| First Appearance | Chapter 14 |
Background / History
Dormammu rose from a trainee soldier to an Imperial general through a career of war. In his younger years, he slaughtered nobles, an act that later left him with influential political enemies inside the Empire. He suspects that these enemies may have helped expose Imperial supply routes to the Allied Forces. 14 15
By the Walden campaign, Dormammu commands the Empire’s Seventh Air Force while facing an increasingly untenable strategic situation: surrounded forces, strained supply lines, hostile occupied populations, and magic-stone costs beyond the military budget. Despite believing this may be his final campaign, he remains focused on finding a way to reverse the Empire’s decline. 14
Appearance
Dormammu is an elderly general, described as seventy-four years old, with a severe and intimidating presence. 15
- White-haired, reflected in his battlefield epithet, the White-Haired Demon General. 19 37
- Hawk-sharp blue or azure eyes. 14 16
- Faintly purple lips. 15
- Habitually carries and smokes a pipe. 14 27
- His rare smiles are described as frightening or ferocious. 16 27
Personality
Dormammu is calm, perceptive, and strategically realistic. He recognizes the Empire’s structural weaknesses rather than relying on empty confidence, and he remains composed even when faced with evidence of betrayal and probable defeat. 14
He values capability over procedure. John Maslow’s unauthorized actions are rewarded rather than punished because Dormammu judges results and initiative to be more important than rigid process. 29 He is also willing to use dangerous missions as tests, believing exceptional commanders must be tempered by genuine battlefield hardship. 14 15
Although known for cold severity and deep scheming, Dormammu can show sincere admiration and protectiveness toward soldiers he considers valuable. John’s apparent loyalty convinces him to assign the Black Eagle Special Forces to secretly protect the young officer during the Anti-Magic Device operation. 16
Abilities & Skills
Strategic Command
Dormammu is an accomplished commander capable of assessing battlefield logistics, enemy deception, resource shortages, and internal political threats.
- Identified the danger posed by compromised Imperial supply routes and the Seventh Air Force’s overstretched position. 14
- Correctly judged that John’s defiance of patrol orders reflected calculated confidence rather than luck or recklessness. 14
- Ordered an immediate full-scale assault on Walden after confirmation that the Allied Anti-Magic Device had been destroyed. 27
- Set a three-hour deadline for the capture of Walden’s Lake of Magic Power. 27
Talent Appraisal and Political Judgment
Dormammu recognizes and cultivates promising subordinates, while remaining aware that political association with his own faction may endanger their futures.
- Identified John as a rare military talent after his first battlefield success. 14
- Tested John through a Deadly Class operation rather than immediately placing him under personal protection. 15
- Recommended John’s future to Duke Ostan after the Walden victory, acknowledging that Dormammu’s own political circumstances limited what he could do for him. 27
- Approved a joint-operation structure for the Bahamut mission to avoid accusations that John had exceeded his rank authority. 31
Equipment / Items

- The Emperor — Dormammu’s military and political decisions are made in service of the Empire and its ruler; he considers John a candidate for greater recognition within the Imperial hierarchy. 26 30
Story Role / Major Arcs
Walden Front Crisis
Dormammu investigates the capture of an Allied infiltration squad and learns that Imperial supply routes have been compromised. He assesses the Seventh Air Force’s deteriorating position, recognizes John Maslow’s potential, and summons him for evaluation. 14
Anti-Magic Device Operation
Dormammu assigns John and the 14th Mage Soldier Mobile Squad to infiltrate Allied territory and destroy the Anti-Magic Devices suppressing Imperial magic soldiers. Convinced by John’s false speech of absolute patriotism, Dormammu secretly sends Jett and the Black Eagle Special Forces to ensure his survival. 16
Walden Counteroffensive
After the Anti-Magic Device is destroyed, Dormammu turns the operation into an immediate offensive, ordering the Seventh Air Force to seize Walden’s Lake of Magic Power within three hours. The resulting victory restores hope that the Empire’s Mage Soldier forces can survive. 27
John’s Elevation and the Bahamut Assignment
Dormammu publicly favors John during the postwar command meeting, praises his improvised governance speech, and assigns him to lead the suppression and administration of Bahamut Town. When John’s rank proves insufficient for command of 720 soldiers, Dormammu accepts Jett’s joint-operation solution. 29 30 31
The “Maslow Quotations” Campaign
Dormammu orders John’s previous rhetoric to be compiled and taught throughout the army as guidance for the “Empire Spirit.” The campaign unintentionally entrenches John’s public image as an exceptionally loyal Imperial officer. 34
