Pitou did not look up.
Her forehead remained pressed tightly against the floor, her black hair hanging down and hiding her face. She knew that any explanation would be pale and futile. She had killed Kite and turned him into a puppet. That was an unchangeable fact. The only thing she could do now was use the utmost sincerity to buy an hour.
Komugi could not die. She was the King's target. No matter what, she had to buy time.
She made her second judgment.
Pitou raised her left arm and gripped her forearm tightly with her right hand. Then she suddenly exerted force.
"Crack—"
The crisp snap of breaking bone exploded through the silent room, so piercing it made their scalps tingle. Pitou's left arm dangled at an unnatural angle, the ghastly white bone jutting through her skin.
Blood dripped from her fingers onto the floor tiles, splashing into tiny blossoms of red. The veins on her forehead bulged from the pain, her teeth clenched and chattered, and large beads of sweat seeped from her brow. Yet her voice remained terrifyingly steady:
"This proves my sincerity. Let me save her first."
Gon lowered his head and looked at the twisted, deformed arm. His face showed no expression. But the fury inside him, almost ready to explode, was forcibly suppressed by the name "Kite." He remembered the look in Kite's eyes before he died. He remembered Kite telling him, "A hunter must never give up."
He could not kill her.
If he killed her, Kite would truly never come back.
"Kite." Gon's voice sounded as though it had been crushed and pieced back together, every word carrying the taste of blood. "You have to turn Kite back to the way he was. Heal him. Bring him back to life."
