Background / History

Killua was raised by the Zoldyck Family to become an assassin. Illumi implanted a Nen Needle in his brainstem when he was young; it reinforces obedience to Illumi and compels Killua to flee or freeze when facing an opponent he believes he cannot defeat. The conditioning had shaped his actions since childhood, including confinement, assassination missions, and being denied ordinary desires such as attending school. 28

After being expelled from the Hunter Exam, Killua returned to the Zoldyck estate and submitted to solitary confinement under the influence of Illumi's conditioning. Zeno ordered his release, after which Killua broke his chains and left without confronting Milluki. 32

Silva later gave Killua the promised choice between the assassin's path and his own future. Killua chose to travel with Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio so that he could be their friend and protect them. He sealed that decision with a blood oath: abandoning his friends would make him an enemy of the Zoldyck Family. 35

He displays his combat ability during the cooking test by easily killing a Great-Nosed Wild Boar with a kunai. 7 During Trick Tower, he identifies that Zha Hu is pretending to be unconscious to consume the team's remaining time. 15

On Glasses Island, Killua surveys the terrain and tracks the other candidates rather than immediately pursuing his own target. He notices Bodoro hiding in a sea cave but deliberately leaves him alone. 20

Final Examination and Disqualification

Killua refuses to fight Pokkle, surrendering because he considers Pokkle an opponent without meaningful ability. 27

His final match against Illumi exposes Illumi's true identity and the extent of Killua's psychological conditioning. Unable to resist Illumi's threat against Gon, Killua surrenders. Soon afterward, while in a trance-like state, he kills Bodoro and is disqualified from the Hunter Exam. 28

Heaven's Arena Arc
