Background / History
Gon enters the Hunter Exam to understand his father, Ging, and the profession that drew him away from Whale Island. The ship captain recognizes his origin and describes Ging as “an outstanding father,” strengthening Gon’s resolve to continue 3 4.
During the voyage, Gon helps crewman Katz gather ropes, accurately predicts a severe storm, and rescues seven examinees despite the danger. He also repeatedly tries to get Saitama to take shelter, eventually wearing down the older man’s irritation through persistence 2.
Gon’s compassion remains central throughout the exam. He leaps overboard to save Katz, works alongside Kurapika and Leorio, and is pulled back to safety only through Saitama’s intervention 3. He later becomes a licensed Hunter, but Killua’s disqualification immediately shifts his priority from celebrating to bringing his friend home 28 29.
Appearance
Gon is a twelve-year-old boy with distinctive spiky hair and an expressive, open demeanor 2.
- Commonly recognized by his spiky hairstyle; Killua initially calls him “Spiky Hair” 5.
- Often carries and uses a fishing rod during the Hunter Exam 24.
- Sustains extensive injuries during the final exam and the attempt to reach Killua, but continues moving despite bandages, broken arms, and whip wounds 26 29 36.
Personality
Gon is cheerful, direct, and unusually unguarded around strangers. He introduces himself openly, helps Katz without being asked, and accepts Saitama’s strange behavior with simple enthusiasm rather than suspicion 2 3.
His kindness is matched by uncompromising resolve. Gon refuses to surrender to Hanzo even after both arms are broken, confronts Illumi while still injured, and crosses Canary’s boundary thirteen times to reach Killua 26 29 36.
Gon can also be observant and patient when necessary. He studies weather, wind, terrain, and animal behavior before acting; however, his focus on a goal can leave him vulnerable to threats outside his immediate attention, as shown when Geretta ambushes him after he steals Hisoka’s tag 6 10 24.
Abilities & Skills
Environmental Observation
Gon reads natural conditions and deceptive situations with strong practical instincts.
- Accurately predicts the incoming storm during the Hunter Exam voyage 2.
- Identifies an Imitation Bird by noticing that its cry does not match its apparent location 6.
- Uses smell and the changing wind to time his jump for a Grape Spider egg 10.
- Studies footprints, wind direction, butterflies, and terrain while tracking Hisoka on Glasses Island 20.
Physical Strength, Agility, and Endurance
Gon possesses exceptional physical ability even before learning Nen.
- Rescues Katz after he is blown from the ship and holds onto him while suspended over the railing 3.
- Endures repeated throws and broken arms during his match with Hanzo without surrendering 26.
- Breaks Illumi’s arm through sheer grip strength while still injured 29.
- Knocks out a two-meter, two-hundred-kilogram Heaven’s Arena opponent with a single palm strike 39.
- His endurance has limits: Hanzo can physically dominate him, and Geretta successfully paralyzes him with a blow dart 26 24.
Fishing Rod and Stealth
Gon uses his fishing rod as both a tool and a precise ranged weapon.
- Follows Hisoka through the forest for several days without being detected 24.
- Hooks and steals Hisoka’s No. 44 tag from behind using the rod’s line 24.
- Fails to notice Geretta’s ambush immediately after the theft, allowing his own tag to be taken 24.
Determination
Gon’s refusal to abandon people or goals is his defining strength.
- Continues fighting Hanzo despite knowing he cannot win through direct combat 26.
- Rejects Wutong’s suggestion that Killua should be killed if he loses control, promising to help Killua choose his own path instead 36.
- Chooses Heaven’s Arena as a place to become strong enough to face Hisoka and continue searching for Ging 37.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Hunter Exam
Gon forms the core friendship group with Kurapika and Leorio, displaying compassion during the ship voyage and resolve throughout the tests. In the island hunt, he spends days tracking Hisoka and successfully steals the magician’s tag, only to be immediately ambushed by Geretta 3 24.
In the final tournament, Gon loses every physical exchange against Hanzo but wins when Hanzo surrenders rather than continue breaking him. Gon is dissatisfied with a victory he did not earn through his own strength, though Saitama quietly acknowledges his persistence by leaving him half of a broken wooden sword 26.
Rescue of Killua
After Killua is controlled by Illumi and disqualified, Gon confronts Illumi despite severe injuries. He refuses to accept that Killua chose to leave voluntarily and leads Kurapika, Leorio, and Saitama toward Kukuroo Mountain 28 29.
At the Zoldyck estate, Gon persists through Canary’s electric-whip attacks and wins Wutong’s coin test by noticing that the coin has been hidden in another butler’s pocket. His reunion with Killua confirms their determination to leave the estate together 36.
Heaven’s Arena
Following the group’s separation, Gon and Killua choose Heaven’s Arena as a place to train, fight, and earn money. Gon is awed by the 251-floor tower and follows Killua’s advice to conceal his actual strength during registration 37 38.
Gon’s first match ends in a one-strike victory that advances him to the 50th floor. He and Killua subsequently reach the 100th floor, where the emergence of Zushi’s Nen signals that their next stage of growth will involve a new form of training 39 40 41.
