The Real Ship Wasn't at the Dock

"How did you know I was an examinee? I don't remember telling you!"

The man in the crew uniform stopped flipping through the list.

Milluki stiffened as well, one hand already reaching into his backpack.

The man looked up, his expression unchanged.

"The registration number is on the list."

Bai Zhu stepped forward half a step.

"Then read it out."

The man did not move.

Bai Zhu smiled.

"Can't read it?"

Milluki immediately caught on and lowered his voice. "Fake?"

Bai Zhu did not answer him. He stared at the list in the man's hand.

"Where did you get that list? Was it issued over at the main dock, or did you print it yourselves?"

The man closed the list.

"The examiner has reminded everyone that leaving the boarding area without authorization will be considered forfeiture."

"Is that the only line you know?"

Bai Zhu raised a hand and pointed toward the main dock.

The broadcast there was playing over and over.

[Hunter Exam examinees, please board the ship as soon as possible.]

[Boarding time is limited. Failure to board in time will be considered automatic forfeiture.]

[Do not enter restricted areas.]

It was loud, as though they were afraid people would not hear it.

More and more examinees headed toward the huge ferry.

Someone looked back and saw Bai Zhu and Milluki still heading in the opposite direction, then burst out laughing.

"Where are those two idiots going?"
