Bai Zhu stared at the Black Gold Fragment in his hand, his throat bobbing.
"Kid, where did you get that thing?"
Milluki stuffed the broken mechanical core back into his bag, zipped it shut, then lowered his voice as he glanced around.
"It was the last thing the underwater buoy sent back."
"The buoy was totaled, and it still managed to fish up a souvenir for you?"
"It happened to get caught on some parts when the mechanical bugs were recovering components."
"Why didn't you mention it earlier?"
Milluki looked up at him.
"Would it have done any good if I had? Besides, I only found it while assessing the losses. With so many people from the Voyage Bureau around, did you think I'd dare say anything? This thing has to be worth a lot."
Bai Zhu froze for a moment.
Milluki was actually right.
If he had revealed it in front of the Association and the Voyage Bureau earlier, it would only have caused more trouble.
And the thing would have been confiscated.
Milluki added, "Remember this: if anyone asks about knocking sounds, say you didn't hear anything."
Bai Zhu frowned.
"Everyone on the ship heard it."
"Sonar echoes, equipment noise, hull vibrations. Call it whatever you want."
"You're pretty experienced at this, young master."
"Obviously. If I wasn't flexible, I'd have starved to death long ago."
Bai Zhu looked at him for two seconds and did not press further.
