Ch. 121They Are People, Not Beasts
Chapter Summary: “They Are People, Not Beasts”
Plot and events
Luo Ye decides to leave Meteor City using a shortcut arranged by Jack rather than waiting for Feitan and the others to escape on their own. Jack tells him that an airship is departing that day and offers to hide him in the garbage room so he can leave the city unnoticed. Although Luo Ye is surprised by the sudden opportunity and has not prepared to leave—or said goodbye—he chooses to go immediately, knowing the next airship may not come for months. Meanwhile, Xiao Ai opens the convenience store as Luo Ye requested and struggles to manage the crowds with the help of summoned tentacles.
Character development
Luo Ye reveals both pragmatism and genuine compassion. He wants to leave Meteor City for his own safety, especially to avoid Feitan’s watchful presence, but he also sincerely hopes to improve the city so its people no longer have to fight over basic necessities. His belief that the inhabitants are “people, not beasts” highlights his growing emotional investment in the community. Despite appearing calm and decisive, he privately feels uncertain about whether leaving is the right choice. Xiao Ai is irritated by the additional responsibility but agrees to help because of her underlying kindness. Jack shows concern and confusion over Luo Ye’s sudden decision, while still respecting it and arranging his departure.
Themes
The chapter emphasizes the humanity of Meteor City’s residents and challenges the idea that they are merely savage or disposable. It explores survival versus compassion, the morality of using an easier path, and the emotional cost of leaving people behind. Luo Ye’s convenience store project symbolizes his attempt to create cooperation and stability in a place defined by scarcity and violence.
Character interactions
Luo Ye asks Xiao Ai to open the convenience store and cautions her not to reveal unnecessary information. He then discusses his departure with Jack, who offers him practical advice and transportation. Luo Ye watches Xiao Ai work but decides not to interrupt her for a farewell. He also avoids saying goodbye to Feitan because he fears their interaction will weaken his resolve to leave.
