Background / History

Marine service and God Valley

Dragon initially served as an ordinary-looking Marine soldier, though a colonel knew that his concealed surname was Monkey and feared that he had entered God Valley without authorization 20. During the God Valley Incident, Dragon attempted to protect Garling's red-haired infant sons, using tranquilizer rounds against a Celestial Dragon and treating the children’s safety as an act of personal atonement 24 37.

God’s Knight Maffy ambushed him while he was carrying the infants. Lilith intervened with Cloud Puppet Show, forcibly controlling Dragon’s movements to evade the attack, then knocked him unconscious and took the twins herself 24. Annus later found Dragon unconscious amid God Valley’s collapse, recognized him as Garp’s son, and carried him off the island 33.

Disillusionment with the Marines

After awakening aboard Annus’s ship, Dragon demanded to know what had happened to the infants. Annus confirmed that they were alive and under his protection, then challenged Dragon’s belief that Marines inherently represented justice while pirates were inherently evil 35.

Dragon initially rejected Annus’s offer to become his envoy and disembarked at Long Ring Long Land to return to Marine Headquarters 35 37. There, he found that the Government had erased all discussion of God Valley; even speaking the island’s name provoked fear from his superiors. He resigned from the Marines after concluding that the Celestial Dragons were the true enemy, despite Garp warning him that Cipher Pol would pursue anyone who exposed the incident 45.

Joining the Angel Legion

Dragon ultimately returned to Annus at Water 7 and boarded the airship bound for Birka 47. Annus formally assigned him and Kuma the rank of Apprentice Celestial Soldier, marked by white wings, and ordered them to train under Yale and Diumil 48.

He resisted being treated as a subordinate rather than an equal partner, but Annus forced him to confront the gap between his ideals and his strength. Dragon accepted the Legion’s authority after acknowledging that he had nearly died to a God’s Knight at God Valley 48.

During his first Legion trial, Dragon was swiftly defeated by the lower-middle-tier soldier Henry after hesitating to fire Garp’s flintlock pistol. The defeat motivated him to set a one-year goal of reaching the top of the Angel Legion 50.

Initial growth and revolutionary trial

Under the Angel Legion’s training, Dragon moved away from relying on firearms, developed the foundation of his own Dragon Claw Fist martial art, and awakened Observation Haki. He demonstrated these gains when he fought the child soldier Douglas Bullet, though Bullet ultimately defeated him through superior physical strength, stamina, and Armament Haki 58 59.

Annus deemed Dragon sufficiently capable to undertake a three-year trial in the Land of Endless War. His mission was not merely to defeat either warring faction, but to overthrow the country’s war-maintaining political system and establish a lasting alternative to it 59.

Dragon entered the North Faction Military Academy under Douglas Gray’s arrangement, but left after ideological disagreements. He subsequently gathered abandoned wounded soldiers and child soldiers into an independent third force, surviving through captured supplies, mine-shaft agriculture, and covert aid from nearby towns 68 88.

Over three years, Dragon used information warfare to expose that the North and South Factions’ leaders profited jointly from the conflict. At their decisive battle, he and 120 unarmed followers spread evidence of this collusion among approximately forty thousand combatants; child soldiers on both sides began laying down their weapons, causing the battle to collapse 88.

Return and independent command

Dragon established Silk Thread, a decentralized messenger network consisting of 173 contacts in 37 towns. The network was designed to expose any emerging leadership that attempted to recreate the country’s former system of war and exploitation rather than seize political power for itself 88.

Upon returning to God’s Island, Dragon presented Annus with the Fusion-Fusion Fruit he had discovered in an abandoned mine. He refused to consume it, reasoning that a powerful weapon could create fear but could not create the trust necessary for a revolution. Annus returned the fruit to Dragon for Silk Thread’s future defense, made him an observer at high-level Heavenly Army meetings, and ordered him to write a revolutionary manual based on his experience 88.

After further combat training under Yale and several spars with Bullet, Dragon was promoted from Apprentice Celestial Soldier to an executive officer of the Heavenly Army. He was assigned to operate independently of Diumil and Yale, reactivate Silk Thread in the Land of Endless War, and expand his cause throughout the Blue Sea with one hundred Naked Horde men acting as covert laborers rather than open soldiers 89 90.

Personality

Dragon is principled, guilt-ridden, and deeply disturbed by injustice. His inability to save the red-haired infants and his firsthand witness of the Human Hunting tournament made him question both his own weakness and the Marines’ moral legitimacy 24 35.

He is initially distrustful of Annus and unwilling to cooperate with pirates, even when Annus offers him a path to challenge the Celestial Dragons. However, Dragon is capable of changing his views when confronted with evidence; the Government’s suppression of God Valley ultimately drives him to abandon the Marines and seek Annus’s support 35 45.

Dragon is proud and resistant to subordination, but he is also self-critical. His defeat by Henry humbles him rather than breaking his resolve, prompting him to pursue serious training 48 50.

His time in the Land of Endless War matures him into a patient and pragmatic revolutionary. Dragon believes that ending a war requires more than defeating its leaders: revolution must replace corrupt institutions with systems that earn public trust and prevent new tyrannies from arising 59 88.

Although he accepts covert force and armed support when necessary, Dragon prioritizes information, public awareness, and decentralized organization over ruling through fear. His refusal to eat the Fusion-Fusion Fruit reflects his belief that people must believe in a movement rather than simply fear its strength 88 90.
