Background / History

Marine service and God Valley

Dragon initially served as an ordinary-looking Marine soldier, though a colonel knew that his concealed surname was Monkey and feared that he had entered God Valley without authorization 20. During the God Valley Incident, Dragon attempted to protect Garling's red-haired infant sons, using tranquilizer rounds against a Celestial Dragon and treating the children’s safety as an act of personal atonement 24 37.

God’s Knight Maffy ambushed him while he was carrying the infants. Lilith intervened with Cloud Puppet Show, forcibly controlling Dragon’s movements to evade the attack, then knocked him unconscious and took the twins herself 24. Annus later found Dragon unconscious amid God Valley’s collapse, recognized him as Garp’s son, and carried him off the island 33.

Disillusionment with the Marines

After awakening aboard Annus’s ship, Dragon demanded to know what had happened to the infants. Annus confirmed that they were alive and under his protection, then challenged Dragon’s belief that Marines inherently represented justice while pirates were inherently evil 35.

Dragon initially rejected Annus’s offer to become his envoy and disembarked at Long Ring Long Land to return to Marine Headquarters 35 37. There, he found that the Government had erased all discussion of God Valley; even speaking the island’s name provoked fear from his superiors. He resigned from the Marines after concluding that the Celestial Dragons were the true enemy, despite Garp warning him that Cipher Pol would pursue anyone who exposed the incident 45.

Joining the Angel Legion

Dragon ultimately returned to Annus at Water 7 and boarded the airship bound for Birka 47. Annus formally assigned him and Kuma the rank of Apprentice Celestial Soldier, marked by white wings, and ordered them to train under Yale and Diumil 48.

He resisted being treated as a subordinate rather than an equal partner, but Annus forced him to confront the gap between his ideals and his strength. Dragon accepted the Legion’s authority after acknowledging that he had nearly died to a God’s Knight at God Valley 48.

During his first Legion trial, Dragon was swiftly defeated by the lower-middle-tier soldier Henry after hesitating to fire Garp’s flintlock pistol. The defeat motivated him to set a one-year goal of reaching the top of the Angel Legion 50.

Personality

Dragon is principled, guilt-ridden, and deeply disturbed by injustice. His inability to save the red-haired infants and his firsthand witness of the Human Hunting tournament made him question both his own weakness and the Marines’ moral legitimacy 24 35.

He is initially distrustful of Annus and unwilling to cooperate with pirates, even when Annus offers him a path to challenge the Celestial Dragons. However, Dragon is capable of changing his views when confronted with evidence; the Government’s suppression of God Valley ultimately drives him to abandon the Marines and seek Annus’s support 35 45.

Dragon is proud and resistant to subordination, but he is also self-critical. His defeat by Henry humbles him rather than breaking his resolve, prompting him to pursue serious training 48 50.

Abilities & Skills

Marine Training

Dragon received Marine combat training and carried a flintlock pistol given to him by Garp after leaving the Marines 50.

• Used tranquilizer rounds during the God Valley Incident, including against a Celestial Dragon 37.
• Attempted to use his pistol against Henry during an Angel Legion trial, but hesitated and used it as a club instead 50.
• Was defeated almost immediately by Henry, who described himself as only lower-middle tier within the Angel Legion 50.

Angel Legion Training

Dragon began training as an Apprentice Celestial Soldier after joining Annus’s force 48.

• Participates in the Legion’s meditation methods, which are intended to help Skypieans control their emotions and develop Observation Haki 50.
• Receives a training program designed by Diumil and Yale 48.
• Set himself the goal of becoming the Angel Legion’s strongest member within one year 50.

• Flintlock pistol — A weapon given to him by Garp after he left the Marines 50.
• White wings — Symbol of his rank as an Apprentice Celestial Soldier in the Angel Legion 48.

Relationships

• Monkey D. Garp — Dragon’s father. Dragon returned to Marine Headquarters to reassure Garp that he had survived God Valley, then informed him of his decision to resign from the Marines 37 45.
• Annus — Rescuer, recruiter, and commander. Annus saved Dragon from God Valley, challenged his worldview, and later made him an Apprentice Celestial Soldier 33 35 48.
• Kuma — Fellow Apprentice Celestial Soldier. Kuma accepted the Angel Legion enthusiastically and introduced Dragon to its training methods 48 50.
• Lilith — Rescued Dragon from Maffy’s ambush but then knocked him unconscious and took the infants he was protecting, leaving him distrustful of her 24 35.
• Yale — Assigned as one of Dragon’s trainers within the Angel Legion and arranged his first combat trial 48 50.
• Henry — Angel Legion soldier who defeated Dragon in their first trial, motivating Dragon to train seriously 50.
