Background / History

Crocodile led Baroque Works during its early expansion and sought to build prestige in Alabasta. His long-term plan was to use Dance Powder to create drought, frame King Cobra, foment rebellion, seize the kingdom as its apparent savior, and locate the Poneglyph concerning Pluton. He regarded cooperation with the World Government as transactional rather than loyal service. 22 36

When Brando appeared at Whiskey Peak, Crocodile identified his capture as an opportunity to make the World Government owe him a favor. He ordered Baroque Works to gather intelligence and track him, unaware that Brando had already placed a Shadow Clone to spy on the order. 22

Brando deliberately traveled to Alabasta and eliminated Crocodile’s observers, Mr. 13 and Miss Friday, before luring Crocodile from Newshore Town into the desert. Crocodile assumed the nearby river was Brando’s sole countermeasure and dried it up, but the battle revealed that Brando possessed water techniques, clones, extreme mobility, and several unreported abilities. 28 30

Crocodile’s defeat by Whitebeard became Brando’s main avenue for psychological manipulation. Enraged by repeated accusations that he had fled the New World and hidden in Paradise, Crocodile abandoned much of his usual composure and fought increasingly recklessly. 29 31

After Brando exposed his Pluton objective, Crocodile became desperate to prevent the secret from reaching the World Government or Alabasta. His sandstorms and traps failed to contain Brando, who finally summoned Banlei above the desert. Banlei drenched Crocodile in seawater, pinned him down, and enabled Brando to trap him in a Water Prison. A Shadow Clone then electrocuted him to death. 31 32

Brando publicized Crocodile’s corpse through the newspaper before burning the remains to ashes. The report was described as the first killing of a Shichibukai and destabilized both Baroque Works and the World Government’s confidence in the Shichibukai system. 34 35
