Background / History
Dugu Yan inherits the Dugu Family’s Jade Phosphorous Serpent Martial Soul and its associated poison backlash. As her Soul Power increases, toxins accumulate inside her body, causing burning pain during cultivation and threatening her organs and bone marrow. The same inherited condition prevented Dugu Bo’s children from living peacefully into old age. Unable to find a lasting cure, he refuses to test unfamiliar medicinal herbs on his granddaughter 34 36.
Her safety becomes central to Tang Chen’s negotiations with the captive Dugu Bo. Tang Chen uses the prospect of leaving her unprotected as leverage, then offers to cure both grandfather and granddaughter. Dugu Bo agrees to surrender the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and submit to him if the treatment succeeds 34.
Dugu Yan initially doubts that someone younger than herself can resolve the family’s condition. Watching Tang Chen cure Dugu Bo changes her attitude, and she accepts treatment using Aromatic Silk Beauty, Ice and Fire Spring Water, and the Life Ancient Tree’s energy. Tang Chen extracts her venom through a life-energy needle into a jade vial. After confirming that she can still control poison without discomfort, she and Dugu Bo kneel and pledge the Dugu Family’s loyalty to Tang Chen and Tang Yuan 35 36.
Appearance
- Build: Slender waist and long, straight legs 36.
- Hair: Long hair, frequently tied behind her head. It is described as black during treatment, emerald-green during the tournament, and dark-green and waist-length before Tang Chen’s Clear Sky Sect journey 36 43 57.
- Clothing: Commonly wears jade-green or emerald-green dresses. Her academy uniform includes a silver belt, while her tournament clothing is an emerald-green team uniform 35 37 40 47.
- Accessory: Wears a green jade hairpin that she later gives Tang Chen for emergency use 57.
Personality
Dugu Yan is skeptical of unproven claims but willing to revise her judgment after seeing results. Her initial distrust of Tang Chen gives way to gratitude once he cures her grandfather. During her own treatment, she overcomes embarrassment and pain because she trusts the evidence of his success 35 36.
Her affection is practical and assertive. She checks Tang Chen’s meridians, prepares medicine, and repeatedly challenges his habit of ignoring injuries or standing at the front of every fight. She also questions the obligations attached to Spirit Hall’s gifts and examines Bibi Dong’s medicinal liquid before he accepts it 39 46 55.
She often presents her concern as responsibility toward a teammate, even when her jealousy and desire for closeness reveal a more personal attachment. Although she competes with Zhu Zhuqing and initially questions Hu Liena’s place in the household, she cooperates with both and eventually supplies medicine for Hu Liena as well as Tang Chen 41 43 53.
