Background & Story

Dugu Yan is the granddaughter of Poison Douluo Dugu Bo and inherited the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Martial Soul. Her parents died because of its hereditary venom: her father’s poison destroyed his meridians when he was thirty, while her mother died shortly afterward from grief compounded by the backlash of their shared Martial Soul bloodline. Dugu Bo concealed this truth from her for years, claiming her recurring pain during rainy weather was a cold-related ailment. 27 28

She first faces Gu Feng in a solo match at the Heaven Dou Great Soul Arena. Confident that her poison makes her invincible against opponents of a similar rank, she is instead countered by his wind barrier and Vacuum technique, then harmlessly pushed out of the arena. Although humiliated, she acknowledges that he held back and vows to defeat him in a future rematch. 10 12

After Gu Feng and Ning Rongrong join the Imperial Fighting Team, Dugu Yan becomes their teammate and is assigned to coordinate her venom with Gu Feng’s wind manipulation. During their first group exercise, rainy weather triggers her poison backlash; her uncontrolled Jade Phosphor Purple Poison nearly harms the team before Gu Feng contains it and identifies the real cause of her collapse. 26 27

Dugu Yan confronts Dugu Bo and learns the truth about her family’s inherited poisoning. Gu Feng later negotiates access to Dugu Bo’s medicinal garden in exchange for treating the Dugu family, then gives Yan the Nine-Grade Dragon Ganoderma. The herb raises her cultivation to level 39, strengthens her body, and transforms her Martial Soul bloodline. At this stage, her poison remains a long-term danger, but Gu Feng states that a suitable Soul Bone and his sealing method can protect her life if obtained within two years. 28 30 32 33

On returning to the academy, she confirms that her poison backlash has been completely suppressed and that her Martial Soul is showing signs of transformation. Her restored vitality and three-level advancement astonish the team, particularly because she has surpassed Yu Tianheng’s level-38 cultivation. She openly credits Gu Feng, and Yu Tianheng thanks him for saving her life. 39

Their subsequent tactical training successfully produces a compressed wind-poison vortex that puts substantial pressure on the Shi brothers’ defenses. Although Yu Tianheng breaks through it with lightning, the exercise establishes the combination’s practical value for formation-breaking. Gu Feng cautions Dugu Yan that powerful elemental attacks and defensive skills can still counter it. 40

Over the following ten months, Gu Feng and Ning Rongrong’s intense cultivation encourages the rest of the team to train harder. With the physical improvements from the Dragon Ganoderma, a new Soul Ring, and a thirty-thousand-year Left Arm Bone obtained by Dugu Bo, Dugu Yan reaches level 43. Qin Ming then takes the team on a practical combat journey through provincial Great Soul Arenas in preparation for the continental tournament. 46

Provincial Arena Battles

Against the Fierce God Team in Silvis City, Dugu Yan activates Jade Phosphor Feast before releasing enhanced Purple Poison. Her venom helps break the enemy charge and corrodes the outer members of their formation, while Gu Feng and Yu Tianheng eliminate the remaining opponents. All seven Fierce God members die. Despite her decisive performance, killing human opponents leaves her visibly pale and emotionally shaken. Qin Ming orders the team to leave the city promptly to avoid retaliation from the nobles backing their defeated opponents. 49 50

At the Suotuo Great Soul Arena, the team splits into smaller groups because suitable seven-person opponents cannot be found. Dugu Yan organizes a three-person squad with Yu Tianheng handling frontal assault, herself controlling the battlefield, and Ye Lingling providing rear-line healing. Their combination wins easily through the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon’s strength and her serpent poison. 52 54

When Yu Xiaogang challenges the Imperial Fighting Team’s experience and offers a supposedly instructive spar against Shrek, Dugu Yan rejects his description of them as sheltered fighters and cites their lethal victory over the Fierce God Team. She later rebukes Yu Tianheng for asking Gu Feng to show restraint toward his uncle, arguing that Gu Feng had already tolerated Yu Xiaogang out of consideration for the team. 56 57

Dugu Yan joins Gu Feng, Ning Rongrong, Ye Lingling, Yu Feng, and Osler in the six-person lineup against Shrek. Her four-ring Soul Ancestor cultivation contributes to the substantial disparity between the teams. Tournament Preparation

During Gu Feng and Ning Rongrong’s secluded cultivation, Dugu Yan delivers the letter explaining that they will not return for team training and that Gu Feng intends to reach level 50 before the tournament. The news prompts Yu Tianheng to demand eight additional hours of training. Dugu Yan also responds by summoning her Martial Soul and tempering her poison sac. The team subsequently trains behind closed doors, with its additional practice increasing to twelve hours daily. 69 72

After Gu Feng and Rongrong return, the team resumes full-combat preparations under Teacher Xue Li. Gu Feng proposes that he and Rongrong sit out a public arena match to conceal their strength from tournament scouts, leaving Yu Tianheng and Dugu Yan to lead the other members. Against the Raging Bear Soul Hunting Team, Dugu Yan’s Blue and Purple Poison, spread by Yu Feng’s wind, incapacitates all seven opposing Soul Ancestors before they can fully unleash their skills. During the final month of preparation, Dugu Yan and Gu Feng refine their coordination into moving, ring-shaped poison barriers that divide Yu Tianheng and the Shi brothers into separate areas. Despite her arrogance, she values fair competition and openly states that victory and defeat are decided by ability. Her confidence is tempered after witnessing Gu Feng defeat Yu Tianheng, at which point she recognizes that his strength is far beyond what their first match revealed. 13 24

She also tends to hide pain rather than burden her teammates. During the wind-poison training exercise, she suppresses severe internal agony and insists on continuing until her condition becomes critical. Learning the truth about her family’s poison reveals a more vulnerable side, but she directly confronts Dugu Bo rather than accepting his comforting lies. 26 28

Her determination to preserve her cultivation is strong enough that she rejects a cure that would render her powerless, stating that losing the results of years of training would be worse than death. She nevertheless accepts Gu Feng’s alternative treatment and publicly acknowledges his contribution to her recovery. 32 39

Dugu Yan’s loyalty to Yu Tianheng does not prevent her from criticizing him. When he favors his uncle during the dispute with Yu Xiaogang, she directly challenges his judgment as captain and defends the consideration Gu Feng has already shown the team. 56 57
