Night had just fallen, and the streetlights of Prosperity Town lit up as usual. Since the townspeople had all taken refuge in the Shopping Center, the streets were the only places in town that still showed any light.
The streetlights cast a faint glow, but darkness still ruled most areas. Giant Spiders crawled over from across the street, weaving between light and shadow, their eight legs appearing and disappearing.
The rustling grew clearer. The Shopping Center was deathly silent, though faint screams could occasionally be heard from above the town. They must have come from unlucky people who had failed to reach the Shopping Center and were hiding somewhere they believed was safe.
Russell watched the giant spiders continuously emerge from the dark corners, and his scalp went numb. Their numbers were impossible to estimate, but he was certain of one thing: there were definitely more of them than there were people in town.
More than a thousand!
Watching the Giant Spiders surge toward the Shopping Center like a tidal wave, Russell immediately picked up the M4A1 beside him and told Mike, "If things go south, make sure you take Ashley and hide in some sealed-off corner. You know spider habits well, so this shouldn't be difficult for you."
"No need. I have these. They can protect Ashley." Mike pulled several bottles of perfume from his backpack. Spiders had an exceptionally keen sense of smell, and perfume could confuse them.
Russell took a bottle of perfume and stuffed it into his pocket. After nodding to Ashley, he headed for the first floor.
Like Russell, many townspeople were briefly saying goodbye to their families. They were going to the front lines to fight the spiders. The elderly offered prayers before standing by the windows, raising their weapons and aiming downstairs.
