Gryffindor Girls Should Love One Another
When Vera wheeled herself back to the Gryffindor table, Harry was viciously stabbing at a steak that had long gone cold with her fork, occasionally glancing toward the twins who had walked straight out of the Great Hall.
"What did you talk about?" Harry asked, pretending not to care.
Vera accepted the pumpkin juice Hermione handed her and took a small sip. "I asked them for a small favor."
"What do you need their help for?" Harry's eyes widened. "I... Hermione and I can help you too!"
Hermione keenly caught the odd note in Harry's voice and lightly kicked her under the table.
Vera's eyelashes trembled slightly as she set down her cup. "We'll talk when we get back."
It really was not convenient to discuss something that could be considered a violation of school rules in such a crowded place.
Harry pursed her lips. Clearly dissatisfied with that answer, she did not press any further.
After dinner, the three returned to Gryffindor Tower.
The common room was exceptionally lively, with students gathered in groups of two and three to discuss tomorrow's Halloween.
The moment they entered, Harry and Hermione were pulled into a conversation by several students they got along with.
Harry chatted smoothly with them for a few moments. Just as she was about to bring the ignored Vera into the conversation too, she turned around and saw Vera wheeling herself straight into the dormitory alone.
"Vera..." Harry called out instinctively, but Vera had already shut the dormitory door.
She bit her lip, a trace of disappointment flashing through her green eyes.
Hermione gently patted her shoulder. "Vera might just be tired. Don't overthink it."
"But she's been acting strange today..." Harry muttered softly. "She's been distracted ever since we left the library."
More accurately, whenever Vera spoke to her, she hemmed and hawed without explaining herself, yet she had gotten along wonderfully with the Weasley twins.
Harry did not understand. What could there possibly be that Vera could not tell her?
Ron had somehow wandered over. "Are you talking about Vera? Wasn't she chatting happily with Fred and the others just now?"
Harry's expression instantly turned complicated. "Yeah... I wonder what they talked about."
"Who knows?" Ron shrugged. "It's pretty amazing that Vera can get along with them."
As soon as he said that, he noticed Harry's expression seemed to worsen. Just as he curiously wanted to ask her about it, Hermione shot him a glare, and he quickly swallowed his words.
Meanwhile, Vera returned to the quiet dormitory.
Through Circuit Vision, she could see the black mist permeating every corner of the castle growing denser and denser. In particular, the area around the underground classrooms had nearly formed into a dark cloud.
After some private experimentation, she had basically confirmed that her Magic Circuit was not intelligent enough to warn her in advance.
The more likely possibility was that Hogwarts had noticed an outside enemy infiltrating and wanted to warn people to take shelter, using the Magic Circuit to convey the message.
Perhaps in the original story, Hogwarts, as a creation of Ancient Magic, also provided warnings whenever similar intrusions occurred. It was simply that no one had ever been able to see them.
So... was she the only one who could see the castle's warning now?
After thinking for a moment, she took several prepared potions from the wheelchair's expanded storage space—mana restoration potions, painkillers, and a small bottle of emergency Dittany Essence.
She had brought all of these with her before the school year began.
After checking the potions one by one and putting them into the wheelchair's hidden compartment, Vera checked her wand again to make sure she was ready for battle at any moment.
Just then, the dormitory door was gently pushed open, and Harry poked her head inside. "Vera? Can I come in?"
"Of course." Vera put away her wand and turned toward the door as if nothing had happened.
Harry walked in, her green eyes brimming with concern. "Are you okay? You've seemed out of it ever since dinner..."
Vera gently shook her head. "I'm fine. I was just thinking about something."
Harry sat down by her bed and hesitated before speaking. "Was it about... what you said to Fred and the others?"
Vera paused slightly, then understood. "You care about that?"
Harry's face immediately reddened as she awkwardly tried to explain. "No! I was just... a little curious about what you talked about."
Seeing how flustered she was, Vera could not stop the corners of her lips from rising. "Do you remember those prank items I discussed with them at the table before?"
"Huh?" Harry blinked, clearly not expecting that topic. "Items?"
Seeing her stunned expression, Vera could not help curling her lips. "Since you really want to know, come with me later."
Where were they going? With whom? George and Fred? What were they going to do with them?
Harry stared blankly at Vera, countless question marks flashing through her mind.
But seeing that Vera did not seem inclined to explain in detail, she could only swallow all her questions.
"Okay..." Harry nodded, confusion still shining in her green eyes. "What about Hermione? Should we bring her too?"
Vera thought for a moment. "We can, but... the fewer people who know about some things, the better."
Harry's eyes lit up instantly, excitement flushing her face. "So we're going to do something... against school rules?"
Seeing her eager expression, Vera could not help laughing softly. "Something like that."
"Awesome!" Harry cheered, then quickly covered her mouth and lowered her voice. "I mean... I'd be happy to help!"
She looked at Vera eagerly like a puppy waiting to be fed. "So what do we do now?"
After thinking for a moment, Vera took out a notebook from the wheelchair's side pocket. "There's still some time before the meeting. How about we try learning the basics of the Disarming Charm?"
Harry immediately perked up and moved closer to Vera. "Really? Who are we going to fight?"
"We're not fighting." Vera opened the notebook, which contained detailed illustrations of wand movements and diagrams of magical power flow. "Didn't you say you wanted to learn it before?"
After seeing Harry anger the three-headed dog with her clumsy Disarming Charm, Vera had already put teaching Harry the spell on her agenda.
Harry nodded seriously, her green eyes fixed on the diagrams in the notebook. "You drew these so carefully... They're much clearer than the ones in the textbook."
Vera gently held Harry's wrist and guided her through the correct wand movement. "The key is the force and angle of your wrist, like this..."
Harry's wrist grew slightly hot in Vera's palm. She could clearly feel the coolness of Vera's fingertips and the delicate touch of her skin.
For some reason, her heartbeat sped up, and her wand nearly slipped from her hand.
"Focus." Vera's voice was close to her ear, warm breath brushing over Harry's earlobe.
Harry's face instantly turned scarlet, and she hurriedly focused on practicing the movement. "I-I know!"
Just then, the dormitory door was pushed open, and Hermione walked in. She stared in surprise at the two people who were nearly embracing each other. "What are you doing?"
Hermione: So, Am I the Extra One?
"What are you doing?"
Harry panicked as if she had been caught doing something bad and quickly withdrew her wand. "N-Nothing! Vera was teaching me the Disarming Charm!"
Hermione gave them a suspicious look, stepped forward, and looked them over. "Why are you suddenly learning that?"
Harry hurriedly waved her hands. "We were just doing it on a whim—"
Vera gently pressed down on Harry's wrist, cutting her off. "No, you came at the right time. I was planning to meet the twins tonight to buy some small items. Want to come?"
Hermione's frown deepened. She crossed her arms, her eyes full of suspicion. "Those prank items? Vera, you aren't planning something against school rules again, are you?"
"Of course not! We were just... um..." Harry faltered and had no choice but to look to Vera for help.
Vera thought for a moment. Looking at Hermione's suspicious expression, she more or less understood that she could not fool her as easily as she could Harry with a few casual words.
Well, it was not that Harry was stupid. She was just easier to coax.
She glanced at Harry beside her, who still looked flustered and confused, and could not help raising a hand to ruffle her hair.
It really did feel nice.
Calmly withdrawing her hand the moment Harry turned around in confusion, Vera gave a light cough. "Actually, it's because I felt something unusual today and wanted to make some preparations in advance."
"Something unusual?" Hermione immediately became alert and hurried to her side. "What was unusual?"
Vera rubbed the pattern on the wheelchair's armrest, her tone not entirely certain. "Maybe it's just my imagination. Or perhaps... it's a lingering effect from the car accident. At the very least, I need to do something before I can feel at ease."
Hearing the pain hidden in her words, Harry and Hermione exchanged a look and both saw the concern in each other's eyes.
"Are your legs or waist hurting again?" Harry immediately crouched down, her green eyes filled with worry. "Sorry, I didn't even notice earlier..."
Hermione's expression softened as well. "Have you been too tired lately?"
"No, it's not physical discomfort." Vera gently shook her head. She carefully chose her words, not wanting to frighten them while still hoping they would stay alert. "It's more like... a special premonition."
She pointed to her temple. "Ever since the accident, my senses have sometimes become very sharp. Occasionally, I can sense danger approaching."
The explanation sounded far-fetched, but given how bizarre the magical world was, both girls actually nodded thoughtfully.
"So," Harry said in sudden realization, "you went to Fred and the others because..."
"I want to buy some protective items," Vera said calmly. "Just in case."
Hermione looked as though she wanted to ask more questions, but seeing Vera's delicate brows faintly furrowed and her hand unconsciously pressed against her chest in a vulnerable gesture, she could not help saying, "If there really is danger, we should tell a professor!"
"Would the professors believe me without solid evidence?" Vera gave a bitter smile, her lashes casting fine shadows beneath the lamplight. "Or is it that even Hermione refuses to believe me?"
Hermione's face instantly flushed red as she helplessly waved her hands. "It's not that I don't believe you... It's just, just..."
Before she could finish, Harry gently took her hand.
"Let's just help Vera feel more at ease, okay?" Harry's green eyes were filled with pleading, and Hermione's heart immediately softened.
"Alright..." Hermione sighed. "But first, you have to tell me exactly what you're planning to do."
Vera lightly wheeled herself closer to the two of them and lowered her voice. "I arranged to meet Fred and George in a secret passage. We won't be gone long."
Hermione bit her lip and thought for a while before finally nodding. "Alright, then I'm coming too."
Vera nodded gently. "Of course."
It was not curfew yet. The three of them going out together would not attract attention.
The three left Gryffindor Tower and made their way down the corridor.
The Halloween decorations throughout the castle cast eerie shadows in the dim light, while talking jack-o'-lanterns occasionally let out cackling laughter.
"So... where is this secret passage you mentioned?" Hermione asked in a low voice.
Vera pushed her wheelchair forward and softly said, "We're almost there."
They reached the fifth floor. There was hardly anyone in the corridor at the moment, and moonlight streamed through the high windows, illuminating the path ahead.
"Is there really a passage here?" Hermione looked doubtfully at the empty corridor.
Vera wheeled herself before an ordinary-looking statue and lightly knocked three times. The wall immediately slid open without a sound, revealing a concealed entrance.
"Wow!" Harry's eyes widened in surprise. "This is..."
"They told me about it," Vera explained softly, wheeling herself inside.
In the fairly spacious passage, Fred and George had already been waiting for some time. When they saw the girls enter, they smiled at the same time.
"Our little first-year finally made it! And you brought friends?" Fred warmly came forward.
Vera wheeled herself to the table, her gaze sweeping over the items. "Did you prepare everything I asked for?"
George gave a mysterious wink. "Of course. We searched for ages before finding a few things that met your requirements."
He took out a small wooden box from beneath the table and carefully opened it. Inside were several small metal spheres arranged neatly in a row.
"Smoke bombs," George explained in a low voice. "Improved versions. They last longer than ordinary smoke bombs, and we added some interesting ingredients. They'll guarantee any creature temporarily loses its sense of direction."
Vera took the wooden box and carefully inspected the items inside. "Anything else?"
Fred took out another small cloth bag. "Portable Swamp. Throw it out, and it creates a small patch of swamp. Creatures caught in it will have a hard time getting free, though it only lasts ten minutes."
Vera did remember an original version of this. In the original story, after the Weasley twins rebelled against Umbridge, they had left a swamp in the school corridors that remained there for quite some time.
