Background / History

The Martial Suppression Hall began as the Heavenly Martial Alliance, a powerful Ningzhou-based force that fought the Great Xia Court under Alliance Leader Chao Hongtu. Its rise was built by four central figures: Chao Hongtu, Army-Breaking Divine General Xie Wenyuan, Yun Zhaolan, and strategist Liu Suifeng 68.

Xie Wenyuan’s battlefield victories won much of the alliance’s territory and standing, but his death in an imperial ambush broke its momentum. Facing the loss of its foremost general and the court’s pressure, the alliance eventually accepted imperial amnesty 68.

The court renamed it the Ningzhou Martial Suppression Hall, granted Chao Hongtu the title of Grand Commander of Martial Suppression, and charged the organization with guarding Ningzhou. The arrangement allowed the court to preserve regional order without attempting to directly govern a province filled with powerful martial factions 58 77.

Despite its authority, the Hall declined over time. Its control weakened near Ningzhou’s borders, allowing groups such as the Nine Swords Alliance to expand. Internal factions, self-interested hall masters, outside collaborators, and a shortage of talented successors further eroded its strength 68 71 72.

The Hall’s outward unity concealed deep factional division.

• Cui Wenzhong secretly sold Martial Suppression Hall intelligence—including deployments and personnel information—to the Shangguan Clan 318.
• Ling Baiyan diverted Vermilion Bird Hall resources to Heaven-Forgetting Pavilion through her connection to one of its disciples 72.
• Wei Yuanlong served as an imperial court spy despite the Hall’s nominal reconciliation with the court 72.
• Feng Wushang did not work with an external faction, but his greed, injuries, and lack of ambition made him a weak and self-serving leader 72.
• Chao Hongtu’s increasing distrust of Liu Suifeng led him to elevate his disciple Qiu Sheng over older founders during his seclusion, worsening the organization’s leadership crisis 397 399.

The Hall’s authority also weakened at the local level. Established families and sects increasingly treated its commanders as powerless, while Yangshan Prefecture’s Four Sects effectively reduced the local Inspector’s Office to an impoverished shell 92 173.

Chen Yuan’s Rise Within the Hall

Chen Yuan entered the Martial Suppression Hall after rescuing Liu Feiyan, Liu Suifeng’s daughter. Liu supported his admission both to repay that debt and to bring exceptional young talent into an organization suffering from a lack of successors 71 72.

Internal Purge

After Chen Yuan returned from the Heaven-Piercing Tower as an Origin Pill Realm expert, Cui Wenzhong attempted to remove him as White Tiger Hall Master under the pretext that Chen had made too many powerful enemies 397.

Chen responded by killing Cui in the Council Hall and producing letters proving Cui’s collusion with the Shangguan Clan. Liu Suifeng then ordered an investigation and purge of Azure Dragon Hall 398.

When Ling Baiyan and Wei Yuanlong failed to support Yang Yanxing against the Shangguan Clan, Chen and Liu concluded that the Hall could no longer tolerate internal threats. Chen killed both hall masters in the following council confrontation, leaving three of the Four Hall Master positions vacant 424 426.

Defense of Tianning Prefecture

The Shangguan Clan exploited the Hall’s apparent disorder and launched a major assault on Tianning Prefecture with roughly thirty thousand martial artists. More than ten thousand Martial Suppression Hall guards deserted before the battle, while Liu Suifeng allowed them to leave rather than retain unreliable troops 429.

The Hall’s weakness was partly a deception. Liu Suifeng had secretly recovered, entered the Dao through formations, and prepared vast defensive formations beneath Tianning Prefecture. Hidden Hall troops used those formations to ambush the Shangguan force once it committed to the attack 424 431.

Yun Zhaolan returned during the battle as a Ninth-Realm Heavenly Profound expert, while Chen Yuan led the Hall’s counterattack. Granny Dragon Ghost also joined the defense against Shangguan Feibai 431.

Dissolution and Restoration

Chao Hongtu’s final betrayal destroyed the last pretense of unity. Having fused himself with the Corpse-Soul Path and used Qiu Sheng as a vessel for his Primordial Spirit, he attempted to devour the flesh, blood, and qi of both enemies and Martial Suppression Hall soldiers 434 435.

After Chao Hongtu’s death, Liu Suifeng and Yun Zhaolan renamed the Martial Suppression Hall the Heavenly Martial Alliance, restoring the organization’s former identity. Yun Zhaolan became the new Alliance Leader 439.
