Almost at the same time, a group of black-clad men burst in through the doorway and began hacking at the soldiers.

"Ah!"

Everyone else had been warned, but Zhang Sui had received no notice. Slightly drunk, he saw a flash of cold steel slashing toward him and only had time to dodge instinctively. Though he avoided the fatal blow and kept his head from being split in two, the blade grazed his shoulder, cutting a bloody gash a finger-width deep. The pain made him scream at once.

The one who had suddenly attacked him was the guard whom he had thought he had built some rapport with. The guard's face was now twisted with savagery, and his strikes showed no mercy.

Fortunately, someone gave him a fierce yank. Zhang Sui lurched sideways, narrowly avoiding this patch of battlefield as well.

With a roll, he tumbled beneath a table. Only then did he let out a breath, before the wound on his shoulder pulled so hard that he nearly wept. Yet those instinctive tears were frightened back by a head that rolled to the floor with a gurgling spin.

The owner of that head had just been glaring viciously at him, trying to split his skull in two. In the end, however, it was the other man who had lost his head.

It had to be said that, for Zhang Sui, this was both satisfying and far too thrilling.

He had originally thought that serving as a guide, though it required some effort and several grueling days on the dry road, was still a fine assignment. He could show his face before Lord Luo, the imperial envoy, and forge a good connection with the newly appointed Top Scorer, who clearly had a bright future ahead of him.
