Background

Shen Li was raised publicly as a male heir because the Artifact Refining Sect would not permit a woman to inherit its leadership. Her male persona secured her status as the sect’s “young master,” while her true sex was known only to a very small number of people, including the Heavenly Doctor Sect’s Holy Maiden 102 106 126.

Her father died after suffering lasting injuries while saving Shen Que, his younger brother, from the forbidden grounds of the Primordial Five Elements Immortal Sect. Shen Que later decided that Shen Li’s talent threatened his own son’s succession, and attempted to remove both Shen Li and her mother, Zhao Qin, from the family 122.

As the Artifact Refining Sect’s young master, she initially attempts to dominate Yun Feiyan and Jiang Yurou through humiliation and threats, but she also enforces a strict image of sect honor by expelling a subordinate who uses poisoned hidden weapons 102.

After Shen Que’s betrayal and Zhao Qin’s sacrifice, Shen Li becomes driven primarily by survival, revenge, and the rescue of her mother. Her desperation leads her to make reckless decisions, including drugging Lu Chen in an attempted exchange for Zhao Qin; afterward, she accepts Lu Chen’s warning that she must first gain enough strength to challenge the Artifact Refining Sect 125 126.

Conflict in Hehuan Town

Shen Li arrives in Hehuan Town as the Artifact Refining Sect’s young master after Yun Feiyan kills Lin Shanhai. She demands that Yun Feiyan become her bed-warming maid, expels a disciple for using poisoned needles, and then targets Jiang Yurou with the same demand 102.

Lu Chen sees through her male disguise and provokes her into attacking him. Shen Li uses the Icefire Fan against Yun Feiyan and later against Lu Chen, but Lu Chen destroys the Icefire Twin Dragons with his fists. Humiliated, Shen Li retreats 103 104.

Ambush and Loss of Status

After leaving Hehuan Town, Shen Li is ambushed by a woman posing as Liu Fuyao. The attack destroys her meridians, bones, dantian, and sea of qi, leaving her nearly crippled. The Artifact Refining Sect prepares for war against the Joyful Union Sect under the belief that Liu Fuyao and Mo Xian’er caused her injuries 105 106.

Shen Que privately regards Shen Li’s condition as an opportunity to replace her with his own son, revealing that her disguised sex and exceptional talent had made her a political threat 106.

Flight from the Artifact Refining Sect

Shen Que attempts to kill Shen Li directly, arguing that her death is necessary for his son to inherit. Zhao Qin reveals her Nascent Soul cultivation, takes a Blood-Burning Pill, and stays behind to protect Shen Li’s escape 122.

Cornered by Shen Fu and other pursuers, Shen Li bargains with Lu Chen for protection using Supreme Fire Spirit Iron. Lu Chen defeats the pursuers, but Shen Li’s concern for Zhao Qin drives her to beg him for further help 123 124 125.

Healing and Alliance with Lu Chen

Shen Li drugs Lu Chen in a desperate attempt to trade him for Zhao Qin. Lu Chen reveals Shen Que’s supposed exchange is a trap, neutralizes the poison with the Yin-Yang Cauldron, and tells Shen Li to cultivate until she can challenge the Artifact Refining Sect herself 126.

Lu Chen then produces a Supreme Ten-Thousand-Year Dragonblood Herb capable of repairing her damaged meridians and dantian. The herb restores Shen Li’s body and loosens her Golden Core bottleneck 126 151.

Revenge within the Artifact Refining Sect

During an assault on the Artifact Refining Sect, Shen Li escapes confinement and ruthlessly searches for Zhao Qin. She kills Shen Zi’ao and Shen Lu after learning Zhao Qin is imprisoned at Azure Dragon Retreat, even though burning Golden Core essence to fight may permanently damage her cultivation 137.

Void City and the Life-and-Death Arena

Shen Li meets Lu Chen, Liu Yan’er, and Helan Xue in Void City. She asks the Joyful Union Sect for assistance against Shen Que, but Ye Chenyu does not commit to her cause 151.

When Shen Peng challenges her on the Life-and-Death Arena, the Artifact Refining Sect assumes she remains half-crippled. Shen Li reveals that she has recovered, overwhelms Shen Peng with the Heaven-Refining Hand, and kills him after publicly accusing his side of plotting against her family 156 157.
