Background / History
Orochimaru trained under Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. He initially expected to spend his life serving Konoha, alternating missions with research. His interest in why life was so brief predated his eventual obsession with immortality 45.
The death of his first disciple, Nawaki, profoundly affected him. Orochimaru had repeatedly checked Nawaki's routes and tried to keep him in safe areas, yet Nawaki died in an Explosive Tag trap. Nawaki's death and the subsequent loss of Dan Katō changed Orochimaru's and Tsunade's attitudes toward mortality 45.
When Hiruzen selected Minato Namikaze as Fourth Hokage, Orochimaru asked why he had been rejected. Hiruzen condemned his dark methods and ruthlessness; Orochimaru interpreted this as proof that his teacher valued him as a weapon rather than a successor. After being discovered experimenting on Konoha ninja, he was spared by Hiruzen but severed his ties with the village to pursue immortality without its political interference 45.
Appearance
- Eyes: Slit pupils and a snake-like gaze 37 43.
- Hair and voice: Long black hair and a distinctive hoarse voice 114 140.
- Forest of Death form: After shedding his damaged body, appears with flamboyant purple eyeshadow and two tomoe earrings 37.
- Replaceable outward identity: Uses false faces and borrowed bodies; his youthful female host conceals his actual age 45.
- True form: A gigantic White Snake Sage bearing Orochimaru's face, with numerous smaller, writhing snakes forming its scales 90.
Personality
Orochimaru places research, longevity, and personal survival above institutional loyalty. He exchanges sensitive information for knowledge and power, accepts office under the daimyo after Konoha's collapse, and pursues Naruto regardless of which faction might win the surrounding conflict 52 58 88.
His emotional detachment is not absolute. He grieves Nawaki, is quietly pleased to reunite with Jiraiya in a parallel world, and experiences a brief pang of heartache before consuming Naruto. These feelings rarely prevent him from using others as experimental subjects or abandoning them when they become inconvenient 45 90 114.
Repeated encounters with world-destroying powers make him markedly less arrogant. He suppresses recognizable techniques, avoids unnecessary confrontations, and eventually prefers kind, uncomplicated people to elaborate schemers. His curiosity remains strong, but survival increasingly takes precedence over investigation 127 128 136.

- Recognizes that scientific research depends on industrial infrastructure he cannot conveniently replace himself 114.
Living Corpse Reincarnation
- Replaces his physical host to escape ordinary aging 45 90.
- Swallows Naruto whole rather than attempting the more difficult task of separating Asura's Chakra from his body 90.

Curse Marks and Resurrection
- Places a three-tomoe Curse Mark on Naruto's neck by biting him 37.
- Naruto gains its benefits but remains immune to Orochimaru's spiritual corrosion 40.
- Leaves soul fragments in Heaven's Cursed Seals as resurrection contingencies 114 127.
- Can absorb another Orochimaru's surviving fragment and replace the old seal with his own 127.
- Maintains enough backups that the Demon considers eliminating him troublesome and inefficient 58.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Plans to summon Hashirama and Tobirama to join his confrontation with Hiruzen 43.
- Reincarnates Obito's relatives, Rin, Danzō, Koharu, and Homura for Sasuke. Sasuke subsequently converts their souls into earthbound spirits; that punishment is Sasuke's ability, not Orochimaru's 26 53.

- Requires human tissue from the deceased, a limitation later encountered by Kabuto after inheriting the technique 108.

- Recognizes emotional changes caused by that will and resolves to destroy or resist it 89.
- His chakra naturally attracts Naruto's Asura-associated chakra, producing an involuntary bond between them 89.
- Reaches the threshold of the Power of All Creation, but his fusion research remains incomplete when he begins the final operation 89.
Infiltration, Genjutsu, and Surveillance
- Uses the Vanishing Facial Copy Technique to conceal his appearance. Karin's chakra sensing can still identify his resemblance to Orochimaru 127.
- Incapacitates Anko with genjutsu while reclaiming an alternate self's Curse Seal 127.
- Investigates dangerous areas remotely through snake clones 121 136.
- Clone memories can transmit Rule Horror contamination back to his original body; he seals his memories to reduce the danger 121.
- Detects inconsistencies in his own cognition and notices time freezes that other inhabitants fail to perceive. The cause of this unusual awareness remains uncertain 121 136.
Dragon Vein Travel
- Discovers the Dragon Vein's usefulness and uses it to leave his devastated original world 114.
- Escapes another lethal world through it and reaches a further version of the Shinobi World 127.
- Keeps his true body near the Dragon Vein as an emergency escape measure while a clone conducts surveillance 136.
Equipment / Items

- Nutrient tanks — Preserve Shizune between his failed treatment attempt and later resurrection 114.
- Sealing arrays and barriers — Intended to isolate the Naruto fusion ritual from outside observation; fail to prevent the Sage of Six Paths' intervention 90.
- Book from the Cat God's collection — Obtained as compensation from the cow cat. Its Jashin Cult symbol prompts speculation about a connection between Jashin and the Cat God, not a confirmed identification 125.
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher. Orochimaru's rejection as Hokage successor fractures their relationship; their invasion-era confrontation becomes an indictment of Hiruzen's leadership 43 45.
- Jiraiya — Former teammate whose affection survives their estrangement. Orochimaru privately appreciates their parallel-world reunion while exploiting it to gather information 114.
- Tsunade — Former teammate and Nawaki's sister. Later seeks his help for Shizune but refuses the shelter of his laboratory in Peace Capital 45 67 114.
- Nawaki — First disciple, whom he tried to protect through carefully checked routes. His death is a turning point in Orochimaru's pursuit of immortality 45.
- Anko Mitarashi — Disciple, captive, and former resurrection backup. After taking her from the exams, he restricts her movements while outsiders believe her dead 37 67 114.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Chunin Exams and Konoha's Fall
- The narrative interprets the original Konoha Crush Plan—and Orochimaru's assassination of his ally Rasa—as possibly intended to limit destruction rather than erase his hometown. This remains an interpretation of his motives 35.
- In the altered Forest of Death encounter, he targets Naruto rather than Sasuke, applies a Curse Mark, and removes Anko from the village 37.
- Attacks Hiruzen with a sword thrust from underground. Sound ninja isolate the former teacher and student inside the Four Violet Flames Formation 42.
- After Konoha's destruction and the abolition of its village system, becomes dean of the Land of Fire Supreme Academy of Sciences 52.
Naruto Experiment and Destruction
- Exploits the Konoha remnants' deployment against Peace Capital to seek Naruto. Although Tsunade blames him for New Konoha's devastation, Naruto and the Nine-Tails have already killed most inhabitants before he arrives 88.
- Calms Naruto through reassurance and the attraction of Indra's Chakra, then takes him to his followers in the Land of Rice Fields 88.
- Removes the Nine-Tails because it would endanger chakra absorption. Unable to reseal it—and unwilling to spend further effort—allows it to escape 89.
- Swallows the dying Naruto inside a heavily sealed chamber. The Sage of Six Paths attacks across time and space, destroying both subjects, Orochimaru's soul, and the Snake Cave Base 90.
Resurrection and Parallel Worlds
- Returns through Shizune's Curse Seal to find the original world devastated and its research infrastructure destroyed. Leaves through the Dragon Vein rather than remain there 114.
- Investigates a parallel world's Rule Horror and Blood Mist Amusement Park through snake clones, discovering that even remotely acquired memories can contaminate him 121.
- Reluctantly enters Rōran's Squid Game scenario on the cow cat's behalf, then escapes its sudden 100°C conditions into another Shinobi World 125 127.
- Absorbs that world's Orochimaru fragment from Anko and adopts an increasingly cautious approach to its apparently peaceful inhabitants 127 128.
- Observes Sasuke and Itachi's duel through a garden-snake clone while keeping his true body near the Dragon Vein. When reality collapses, escapes through it and briefly perceives the world taking on the appearance of a manga before losing consciousness 136 138.
Eclipse and the Sage's Tomb
- In the later Eclipse storyline, withdraws his subordinate from Danzō's service while preparing to abandon Konoha. Despite having raised Eclipse, remains suspicious of his unknown origins and loyalty 140 141.
- Enters the supposed Sage's Tomb seeking immortality, unaware that Eclipse fabricated it specifically to lure him before expanding the trap to other factions 151.
- Becomes trapped with other explorers in a labyrinthine alternate dimension. Earth Release cannot provide an escape, leading him to consider suicide followed by Curse Seal resurrection 153.
- A stone stele's accounts of immortal flesh, soul, and will force him to reconsider whether endless survival can preserve memory, mentality, and personal identity 153.
