Background / History
Uchiha Massacre and Demonic Possession
Following the Uchiha massacre, Sasuke is publicly believed to be the clan's sole survivor. Unknown to Konoha, his newly awakened One-Tomoe Sharingan is removed by the Demon and used as an offering to the Wish-Granting Lamp. 1 2
Sasuke is physically spared by the massacre but left deeply traumatized by Itachi's Tsukuyomi and the murder of his family. While recovering in the hospital, he is drawn into his spiritual world, where the Black Shadow introduces itself as an inhuman presence living within him. 3
The Black Shadow is a Spore Parasitic Soul: a demonic spiritual clone created to corrupt vulnerable people across the Shinobi World. It exploits Sasuke's grief, hatred, loneliness, and desire to kill Itachi, offering power in exchange for murder. 3 4
First Murders and Corruption
Sasuke initially attempts to negotiate with Black Shadow rather than obey it blindly. When threatened with abandonment, he declares that his life and body have value only if they can be used to avenge the Uchiha. 4 5
After learning details of the manga-recorded future, Sasuke asks Black Shadow for power “to destroy everything.” He still hesitates when urged to murder an Academy classmate, showing that his conscience has not yet fully collapsed. 5
His first kill occurs in the Forest of Death, where he struggles to defeat a crippled middle-aged ninja. Black Shadow suppresses Sasuke's guilt and replaces it with excitement, reframing murder as a form of leveling up. 6
Sasuke's anger expands from Itachi to Danzō, Konoha's leadership, and the clans that benefited from the Uchiha's destruction. Black Shadow encourages him to interpret collective resentment as justification for collective punishment. 7 21
Alliance with Neji and Rejection of Konoha
Sasuke forms a close alliance with Neji Hyuga after recognizing that both have accepted dangerous supernatural power while fearing the forces controlling it. They train together, conceal their abilities, and eventually hunt civilians together. 14 15
He rejects Sakura Haruno and Ino Yamanaka formally, explaining that the responsibility of avenging and restoring the Uchiha leaves no place for romance. 15
As Sasuke's strength grows, he becomes increasingly distrustful of Hiruzen, Danzō, Kakashi, and Konoha's institutions. He sees the village as a system built on propaganda, unequal access to power, and the suppression of inconvenient history. 9 22 29
Sasuke secretly pledges loyalty to the Land of Fire's daimyo and manipulates Kakashi into questioning his allegiance to Konoha. He presents the abolition of the Ninja Village System as an inevitable political transition while concealing his own stake in the coming upheaval. 31 32
Destruction of Konoha
By the time of Konoha's fall, Sasuke openly wields Mangekyō Sharingan and abnormal demonic techniques. He destroys Konoha, then uses the ruins, the dead, and the survivors as material for revenge against the old regime. 50 53
He desecrates graves and uses Impure World Reincarnation to revive Danzō, Koharu, Homura, Rin Nohara, and Obito's relatives. Rather than granting them life, he traps their souls and turns their loved ones into tools for Obito's psychological torture. 53 55
After becoming the Land of Fire's secret daimyo, Sasuke places escalating bounties on Sarutobi and Konoha survivors, ensuring that even former Konoha shinobi cannot live in peace. 59
War Against Konoha's Remnants
Hiruzen eventually confronts Sasuke directly and attempts to stop him with the Reaper Death Seal. Sasuke survives, consumes the Death Reaper, and strips Hiruzen's soul from his body. 83 85
Might Guy's Eighth Gate and Night Guy destroy Sasuke's body repeatedly, but Sasuke regenerates from scattered flesh and mist. His opponents conclude that conventional physical force cannot permanently kill him. 86
Sasuke later massacres shinobi attempting to rescue Yamato, kills Shikaku Nara after breaking Shadow Imitation, and horrifies Inoichi Yamanaka when the latter attempts to enter his mind. 92
Alternate-World Counterpart
A separate Shinobi World contains another Sasuke whom Orochimaru considers far less calculating and ruthless than the Sasuke he knows. This counterpart fights primarily with Fire Release, Lightning Release, and Raikiri rather than Decaying Mist. 127 136
During that world's confrontation with Itachi, the alternate Sasuke exposes Itachi's long-term plan to manipulate him into awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan and surrendering his eyes. 136
Personality
Sasuke begins as a traumatized, grieving child whose hatred of Itachi is inseparable from his love for his brother. He is suicidal enough to surrender his own body to Black Shadow, yet initially refuses to kill innocents merely to gain power. 3 5
He is observant, politically minded, and unusually capable of concealing his thoughts. He recognizes Hiruzen's attempts to use him for propaganda, lies convincingly about his Water Release, and uses elaborate conspiracy theories to destabilize Kakashi psychologically. 22 31 32 40
His greatest fear is losing autonomy. Sasuke resents Black Shadow, Orochimaru, and Itachi not only as threats, but as figures who might decide his future for him. He regards Kotoamatsukami as a form of spiritual death because it would force him to think according to another person's will. 23
Over time, Black Shadow's manipulation and Sasuke's repeated violence erode his remaining restraint. He progresses from conflicted murderer to someone who treats corpses, souls, families, and memories as weapons against his enemies. 6 53 56
Abilities & Skills
Decaying Mist
A demonic mist curse that causes living targets to wither, age, corrode, and eventually disintegrate.
- Can rapidly reduce a living target to dust, removing physical evidence of the kill. 8
- Can form a visual barrier, allowing Sasuke to counter Neji's eye-based despair effect by blocking his line of sight. 22
- Can counter powerful Fire Release techniques, including Hiruzen's Fire Dragon Flame Bullet. 83
- Can harden or reshape into claws, spears, tentacles, and other attacking forms. 55 85
- Affected targets include people, Wood Release constructs, and the battlefield itself. 92
- Intelligence from Tsunade describes the mist as possessing no chakra fluctuations and as capable of corroding nearly anything. 100
Mist-Body Regeneration
Sasuke can transform his body into abnormal mist and regenerate after destruction that would kill an ordinary shinobi.
- Survives Night Guy after his body is smashed into a crater and reduced to mangled flesh and bone. 86
- Reconstructs organs and flesh from blood mist. 86
- Can divide into multiple independently moving masses of flesh after being torn apart. 86
- Treats his current body as an expendable avatar and shows little concern for conventional bodily damage. 85
Mangekyō Sharingan
Sasuke's ocular power is tied to his later public emergence as an overwhelmingly dangerous Uchiha.
- The Black Shadow claims to have fabricated Sasuke's Mangekyō after suppressing his original Indra-related potential. 5 24
- Uses Earth Bind to torture Kakashi and restrain victims through Mangekyō power. 54
- Can restrain, summon, manipulate, and destroy souls. 53 55 100
- Allows Sasuke to control reanimated Itachi while disguising the visible signs of Impure World Reincarnation. 76 82
- His later stockpile of Sharingan permits repeated use of Izanagi, giving him additional protection against fatal outcomes. 100
Impure World Reincarnation and Spirit Binding
Sasuke turns resurrection into a method of punishment rather than restoration.
- Uses Orochimaru's knowledge and assistance to revive dead enemies and people connected to Obito. 53 54
- Sacrifices Kisame to reanimate Itachi in a healthy, obedient undead body. 76
- Forces reanimated spirits to attack their own loved ones. 55
- Creates Earthbound Spirits, including Itachi and the former Konoha elders, condemning them to continued existence after death. 56 113
Ninjutsu, Deception, and Political Manipulation
Sasuke supplements his demonic abilities with practical shinobi skills and psychological warfare.
- Uses Transformation Technique to impersonate Itachi and lure Root operatives into an ambush. 10
- Uses smoke, fog, and concealed movement to disappear from pursuers. 10
- Employs Shadow Clones to attend the Academy and maintain appearances while secretly planning with Neji. 23 32
- Claims his unusual Water Release was taught by Fugaku, successfully preventing Hiruzen from proving the truth. 22
- Constructs persuasive but fabricated political narratives to manipulate Kakashi into doubting Konoha's history and future. 31 32
