Hehehe, Kenpei Aburame, your goddess will still be spending every day with me from now on, while you can only fret at home every day.
Mad? Mad?
The Third Hokage tapped his pipe. "Kakashi, did you gain anything from this mission?"
It was both concern for a junior and a means of winning people over. Of course, ordinary people were not even worth winning over.
Kakashi thought over his mission experiences from the past year and said, "When the enemy advances, we retreat. When the enemy holds position, we harass them. When the enemy tires, we strike. When the enemy retreats, we pursue."
The Third Hokage was stunned, even forgetting to lower his pipe. He carefully savored those sixteen words, feeling that they contained profound tactical insight.
"Kakashi, that is an excellent principle. I will have it written into the ANBU operational code," Hiruzen Sarutobi said solemnly.
Kakashi scratched his head. Truthfully, he had no idea how he had come up with those words. It had felt as though they had been right on the tip of his tongue, and he had simply said them.
"The village has been short-handed lately, so stay in the village for now. You performed well this time, so you will serve as the captain of the Second Division."
Each ANBU division had four squads under it, which meant he now had sixteen people under his command.
The position was not particularly high, but the speed of his promotion was enough to show the Third Hokage's trust in him.
After returning to the village, combat was not as frequent as before, but White Fang still tasted blood every few days. Backed by his formidable strength, Kakashi's name spread throughout ANBU.
It was not a good name, however. He was called the Companion Killer!
The days passed one after another, but Kakashi's training never stopped.
On days without missions, he trained with Guy, hoping to increase his chakra reserves by strengthening his body.
Hard work paid off. After two years, Kakashi's chakra reserves finally reached ten units.
Regrettably, once he reached ten units, Kakashi's chakra reserves stopped growing.
Maybe this was his limit. Kakashi felt somewhat dejected. His finish line might only be the starting point of some Uzumaki fellow. That gap was truly hard to bear.
Of course, that was just a joke. Even when he only had one unit, he could still fight anyone to a draw.
Now that he had ten units of chakra... he would probably still fight others to a draw. After all, that was just his character setting.
At present, the only thing that could raise his strength to another level was probably Sage Art!
That day, after completing a mission, Kakashi went to the Hokage's office to report back.
The Third Hokage said solemnly, "Kakashi, there is a mission that requires you to go alone."
"Please give the order, Lord Third."
Kakashi was extremely curious. What kind of mission required him to go alone?
"ANBU discovered one of Orochimaru's secret bases. I hope you can investigate it and see whether there are any useful clues."
Kakashi suddenly understood. So it was a mission involving Orochimaru. No wonder the Third Hokage wanted to keep it quiet.
At this point in time... could it be?
Several thoughts flashed through Kakashi's mind, but outwardly, he remained calm as he replied to Hiruzen Sarutobi.
"Yes, Lord Third!"
"Make your preparations and set off." The Third Hokage waved a hand, signaling that Kakashi could leave.
At the Root base, Danzo looked at the kneeling ninjas and said, "The Sharingan was meant to be thrown away after use."
"Even the Uchiha Clan will lose their ocular power after using the Sharingan too much, eventually losing their sight."
"Not to mention that some forbidden techniques can only be activated at the cost of the Sharingan itself... hehehe!"
Danzo pulled away the bandages on the right side of his face, revealing a Sharingan that had already lost its luster.
"Find a replacement for this Sharingan of mine," Danzo said coldly.
"But Lord Danzo, if we make a move against the Uchiha Clan, we will need more thorough preparations." One subordinate hesitated.
Danzo chuckled. "It does not necessarily have to be someone from the Uchiha Clan. Isn't there someone in the village right now who lost his parents and teacher, personally killed his friend, and has a Sharingan?"
"Our target is Kakashi Hatake!" The subordinate reacted swiftly.
"Correct. Bring me his Sharingan."
"Yes, Lord Danzo!"
Just then, a different voice rose from the crowd.
"No, Lord Danzo!"
Everyone turned to look.
"Kinoe, what did you say?" Danzo could hardly believe his ears.
"Lord Danzo, Kakashi Hatake is our village companion. How can we lay hands on one of our own companions?"
"Bastard!" Danzo grabbed Kinoe by the collar and lifted him into the air.
"Only everyone in Root is your companion. I am your family!"
"As a Root ninja, carrying out my will is your only mission!"
"No, Kakashi Hatake is my companion. I will not hurt him!" Kinoe held firm to his belief.
"Insolence!"
Danzo was furious. He would not allow Root ninjas to have thoughts of their own. There could only be one will here: his will!
"B, C, D, and E, the four of you will deal with Kakashi Hatake," Danzo ordered.
"Yes, Lord Danzo!" The four answered and vanished.
Danzo looked at Kinoe in his hand. The Sharingan in his eye spun rapidly as he used genjutsu.
"It seems I need to strengthen this brat's curse mark. Damn it!" Danzo cursed. "Damn Kakashi Hatake. Everyone from the Hatake family only knows how to ruin my plans!"
Outside Orochimaru's secret base, Kakashi sneezed and rubbed his nose in confusion.
"This is the place. Seal: Release!"
Kakashi brought his hands together, undoing the seal on the door. Then, as though familiar with the route, he easily avoided a series of traps.
His actions left the Root ninjas behind him dumbfounded.
"This guy... why does it feel like he's walking into his own home?" B complained.
D said, "More than that, I am more concerned about Kinoe. I wonder what he was thinking, defying Lord Danzo's orders."
E agreed. "Exactly. We are the roots supporting Konoha's great tree. For the sake of the village, certain sacrifices are unavoidable."
C said coldly, "Stop getting distracted. Hurry up and follow Kakashi Hatake. We must obtain his Sharingan for Lord Danzo."
The four figures flickered as they copied Kakashi's movements, avoiding Orochimaru's traps and continuously heading deeper inside.
Kakashi crouched in a high spot, watching the four below as he muttered, "Well, as expected, that old bastard Danzo is still coveting Obito's eye."
"Four of them came because I am stronger than I was at this point in my memories, huh... Speaking of which, why haven't I seen Yamato? Could that also be because of my butterfly effect?"
