Cross-World Exchange
"Appearing mysteriously, then vanishing without a trace. On this already lifeless planet, with no transportation whatsoever, how had you crossed an endless ocean and appeared in another city within a year?!"
Inside the underground base, the middle-aged man wore a grim expression as he reported to a communications terminal on the console.
"Entity N7512, codename 'Mysterious Visitor,' has appeared near Big Apple City. Execute the emergency protocol immediately!"
A burst of static came from the communications terminal. The other side seemed equally shocked by the news. After a moment of silence, it replied.
"Understood. Drones have already been dispatched. Make contact if necessary!"
"Also, the target appears to be pursuing a high-level viral infected... Damn it, if that woman didn't have wings and hadn't been identified as an infected entity by the base AI, I would have thought she was simply an exquisite beauty!"
The middle-aged man transmitted the satellite footage. As expected, he heard suppressed exclamations from the other end.
"I suspect the virus has undergone a special mutation within this high-level infected. It might be the key to cracking the virus. I recommend immediate containment!"
"Or we could use it as a bargaining chip to communicate with the Mysterious Visitor..."
Naturally, Xiao Liang knew nothing about what was happening in the underground base. At that moment, he was still chasing the Flying Yaksha.
"Sure enough, anything running on the ground can't catch something flying in the sky!"
Xiao Liang stopped, panting. He had sprinted across more than a dozen city blocks, nearly crossing half of Big Apple City in an extremely short time.
Even his body, nourished by spiritual power, was starting to give out.
Fortunately, the spiritual connection between him and the Flying Yaksha had not broken. Instead, it was gradually strengthening, putting him somewhat at ease.
"No rush. I should recover my spiritual power first!"
Xiao Liang shook his head. Though he was no longer on the Sky Mist Continent and was instead in the Resident Evil World, some unknown distance away—
After repeated experiments, Xiao Liang had discovered that no matter which world he traveled to, he could actively draw in spiritual energy from the Sky Mist Continent.
At most, the spiritual energy was not dense enough for cultivation and could only barely restore his spiritual power.
Otherwise, if he had arrived in a world without magic, all his cultivation would have long since become useless.
How could he have possibly pulled off something as unbelievable as refining a Flying Corpse from a hundred thousand zombies?
"Hmm? I can restore spiritual energy because of my world-traveling ability. But strictly speaking, although the Flying Yaksha has yet to gain cultivation, she is already a spiritual-energy lifeform!"
"She basically cannot replenish the spiritual energy in her body in this world. Right now, she can only rely on the energy she absorbed in the stadium before, along with the energy within the Corpse Demon Pill!"
"Once she exhausts all her spiritual energy, she'll be like a bird in a cage or a fish in a net. Wouldn't subduing her be effortless then?"
Xiao Liang had not expected such a turn of events. Realizing this, joy immediately appeared on his face, and he finally set his mind at ease.
After a while, Xiao Liang's spiritual power had fully recovered. Unhurriedly, he activated Ghost Shadow Step and followed the trail.
Yet along the way, perhaps it was merely an illusion, but Xiao Liang kept feeling as if something were watching him.
When he looked around, all he saw were a few scattered wandering zombies.
They often could not even touch Xiao Liang's shadow before he had already shot past them.
Though he treated it as an illusion, he secretly became more cautious.
Before long, although Xiao Liang had yet to find the Flying Yaksha, he had already found the traces left by her feeding spree.
Quite a few zombies looked as if they had been mauled by lions or tigers, their parts scattered all over the ground in an extremely brutal scene.
After inspecting them, Xiao Liang discovered that no part of these zombies had been devoured.
"With the Flying Yaksha's current level of evolution, ordinary zombies probably can no longer provide her with energy. Only rare mutants, whose mutation cores can ease her hunger, will do."
However, without spiritual energy to catalyze them, whether naturally mutated zombie specimens could even be found was another matter.
Xiao Liang only guessed that they existed. Even after spending so long in Big Apple City, he had not encountered a single one!
"You should just obediently come back to the Sky Mist Continent with me!"
Xiao Liang curled his lips slightly and muttered to himself.
As he was thinking this, Xiao Liang's expression suddenly changed. He sensed that the Flying Yaksha was in a nearby block ahead.
Before he could approach, violent explosions erupted from up ahead, accompanied by the Flying Yaksha's furious roar!
Xiao Liang leaped onto a nearby streetlamp and focused his vision into the distance, immediately startled by what he saw.
On the distant street, a black armed helicopter was circling at low altitude.
At one of the helicopter's windows, a soldier in a white protective suit leaned half his body out, holding up a large sniper rifle and aiming somewhere below, firing from time to time.
From beneath the black helicopter's fuselage, small missiles as thick as a child's arm sprayed out like a swarm of hornets.
They plunged into an abandoned house, and in the blink of an eye, flames flared up and violent explosions rang out.
This was the source of the explosions Xiao Liang had just heard.
"Armed helicopter, sniper, missiles... This biohazard world actually still has surviving armed forces. Humanity is still lingering at the edge of its destruction cycle!"
In just an instant, Xiao Liang understood. There were still a very small number of survivor factions in the world he had entered.
They might be hidden in the deep sea or underground bases. Though they could not save this lifeless world, if they were lucky enough, they might still hold on for another hundred or two hundred years.
Only then would humanity be completely extinct.
"The appearance of human survivor factions is an uncertainty for me. If surveillance equipment like satellites still exists, there's a high chance I've already been exposed!"
"And judging by how they suddenly appeared and immediately tried to capture the Flying Yaksha, that possibility is extremely high!"
Xiao Liang's expression shifted constantly. At first, he had thought he was the only living person left in this world, so he had acted without restraint.
Had this world been destroyed? From a macro perspective, it had long since been destroyed. The small population in the underground base and the remaining reserves of resources could not even sustain normal human survival for more than two generations.
They were like the faint remnants of embers after a bonfire had burned out, destined to be extinguished sooner or later.
Perhaps that was precisely why it had been located by Xiao Liang's apocalyptic-world traversal ability.
"The Qi Refining Stage is still far too weak!"
Xiao Liang sighed with a headache. The thermal weapons in the hands of those armed survivor forces posed a considerable lethal threat to him as well.
But if he wanted to leave, such things still could not stop him. After all, if he gave up on the Flying Yaksha and returned directly, there was nothing anyone could do to him.
"Should I retreat?"
Just as Xiao Liang began to consider backing down, a compact drone flew out of the clouds overhead and arrived before him.
Looking at the object before him, Xiao Liang gave a light laugh as realization dawned on him. So the sensation of being watched that he had felt earlier had come from it.
"Please do not leave in such a hurry, mysterious sir. We mean no harm!"
A middle-aged man's voice came from the drone's loudspeaker, repeating the sentence in several different languages.
Because this world seemed to be a parallel world of Blue Star from Xiao Liang's previous life, the languages were largely the same.
Their very first words expressed goodwill and asked him not to leave?
Sure enough, the survivor factions had also detected traces of his previous experimental visit to this world.
They were certain that he possessed some kind of unusual mobility ability.
As for whether they had guessed that this so-called mobility ability was actually world travel, that was still unclear.
After a moment of silence, Xiao Liang chose one of the languages he commonly used and replied, "Your world has already been destroyed. Why not peacefully enjoy your final days?"
This time, the drone fell into a long silence.
