Background / History
Obito attended the Ninja Academy as one of its lowest-ranked students. He possessed unusually large chakra reserves but poor chakra control, which caused his Clone Technique to form a grotesquely malformed duplicate and made him a target of ridicule. He secretly knew the Fire Style: Fire Ball Jutsu, but Might Guy defeated him before he could use it in the practical examination. Rin alone comforted him afterward, reinforcing Obito’s belief that she cared deeply for him. 12
After graduation, Obito joined Team Minato alongside Rin and Mikami Yu, with Hatake Kakashi serving as assistant instructor when Minato was absent. He immediately rejected Kakashi’s authority and declared that he would surpass him, establishing their recurring rivalry. 48
Real combat gradually tempered Obito’s confidence. He initially froze in fear against rogue Chūnin, but Yu’s example pushed him to fight back. He later fought alongside Rin on the Sunagakure front, where their near-defeat and Rin’s injury triggered his early Sharingan awakening. 56 128
Appearance
Obito is commonly seen with goggles before and after awakening his Sharingan. 183
- His activated Sharingan has two tomoe in each eye. 128
- He purchased a white, spiral-patterned mask during Team Minato’s leave in Hazy Moon City. 120
- His attempt to use Transparent Escape Technique initially made him resemble a human-shaped “mosaic” beneath an unstable, watery veil. 141
Personality
Obito is loud, competitive, and intensely eager for recognition. He repeatedly declares his ambition to become Hokage, boasts about his Sharingan, and seeks praise from Rin, Yu, Kakashi, and his peers. His former “dead last” reputation remains a source of insecurity, making him especially sensitive when others overlook him or compare him unfavorably to stronger shinobi. 12 130 230 274
Despite his immaturity, Obito is compassionate and unwilling to accept the idea that comrades or civilians are expendable. He struggles with moral dilemmas involving who should be saved, objects to Orochimaru’s willingness to treat soldiers as necessary sacrifices, and is horrified when Root operatives allow civilians to die for mission success. 108 188 205 206
He is also emotionally transparent. His crush on Rin drives many of his reckless attempts at heroism, while her closeness with Yu provokes obvious jealousy. 12 128 142 210
Abilities & Skills
Two-Tomoe Sharingan
Obito awakens the Sharingan directly at the Two-Tomoe stage when Rin is endangered during a battle with Sunagakure shinobi. 128 129
- Enhances his perception enough to identify attacks and hand seals before they are completed. 128 156
- Allows him to copy visible ninjutsu, including an enemy’s Fire Ball Jutsu. 156
- Improves his chakra control and combat performance, though it does not automatically make him stronger than Kakashi or Yu. 130 133
- Cannot copy the unique “traits” granted to Yu through the Gala System; at most, it can inspire Obito to develop comparable techniques himself. 142
- He initially knows no genjutsu despite possessing the Sharingan. 133
Fire Style
Fire Style is Obito’s primary elemental specialty and the area in which he shows the most obvious growth.
- He knew Fire Style: Fire Ball Jutsu while still an Academy student, though Guy prevented him from revealing it during their examination match. 12
- His copied Fire Ball Jutsu overwhelms a Kusagakure shinobi’s version with a larger, fiercer fireball. 156
- His Fire Style and taijutsu improve substantially through training under Minato and Fugaku Uchiha. 149 164
- Yu identifies a major weakness in Obito’s Fire Style: he is too direct and wastes openings through poor timing. 183
Taijutsu
Obito’s close-combat ability begins poorly but improves significantly after his Sharingan awakening and frontline experience.
- Might Guy decisively defeats him with Leaf Hurricane during the Academy practical examination. 12
- He remains unable to defeat Guy even after awakening the Sharingan, leading him to insist that losing at taijutsu “doesn’t count.” 177
- By later training periods, observers note that his taijutsu is not far behind Guy’s, especially when combined with Two-Tomoe perception. 164
Transparent Escape Technique
Obito attempts to learn the Transparent Escape Technique after Jiraiya introduces it to Team Minato. 139
- His early use creates only a conspicuous water-like distortion rather than true invisibility. 141
- With practice, he can cover himself in a frosted-glass-like layer that makes him difficult to see from certain angles. 273
- Yu can still defeat him easily when using the technique at a much higher level. 273 274
Relationships
- Nohara Rin — Teammate and Obito’s longtime crush. His desire to protect and impress her drives his reckless behavior, but his sincere fear for her safety triggers his Sharingan awakening. 12 128 142
- Hatake Kakashi — Rival, teammate, and former assistant instructor. Obito resents Kakashi’s dismissive attitude but gradually gains empathy for him after learning about Sakumo Hatake’s death. 48 66 130
- Mikami Yu — Teammate, frequent sparring partner, and repeated rescuer. Yu saves Obito from quicksand and an explosive trap, while Obito develops admiration, jealousy, and a desire to close the gap between them. 56 105 178
- Namikaze Minato — Jonin instructor. Minato teaches Obito practical battlefield awareness and allows him to gain experience through real combat, while criticizing his carelessness around traps. 56 105
- Might Guy — Persistent taijutsu rival. Guy humiliates Obito during the Academy examination, and Obito remains determined to eventually beat him. 12 177
- Uchiha Fugaku — Clan head who offers to teach Obito how to use his Two-Tomoe Sharingan. 149
- Uchiha Madara — Hidden manipulator who considers Obito his most promising future pawn. Madara orders constant surveillance of Obito and intends to cultivate despair by exploiting his bonds with Rin, Kakashi, and Yu. 129 257
Story Role / Major Arcs
Academy Underachiever
Obito begins as a mocked Academy student whose poor chakra control undermines his large chakra reserves. His inability to use the Clone Technique properly and defeat Might Guy establishes his early underdog role. 12
Team Minato Rivalries
As part of Team Minato, Obito competes constantly with Kakashi, tries to impress Rin, and initially treats Yu’s orders in battle as opportunities to prove himself. His social enthusiasm also brings the group together outside missions, including at his home in the Uchiha compound. 37 48 50
Southwestern Front and Sharingan Awakening
Obito participates in increasingly dangerous missions against rogue shinobi and Sunagakure. His inability to protect Rin during a two-on-two battle pushes him to awaken the Two-Tomoe Sharingan, an event that attracts Madara’s attention and alters the expected course of his future. 56 128 129
Growth After Awakening
Obito becomes excessively proud of his Sharingan, only for Kakashi to defeat him and force him back into serious training. He improves in Fire Style, taijutsu, and copying techniques, though Yu repeatedly demonstrates that copying movements alone cannot reproduce true combat rhythm. 130 133 178 213
Moral Conflict in the Sunagakure War
Obito objects to battlefield plans that treat soldiers and civilians as expendable. His outrage over Root’s sacrifice of civilians is deliberately exploited by White Zetsu, who hopes such experiences will estrange him from Konoha and make him easier for Madara to manipulate. 188 205 206
Later Training and Kirigakure Campaign
Obito continues training with Kakashi, Shisui, and Yu while pursuing the identity of a “Copy Ninja.” He remains a capable combatant among his peers, but his impulsiveness and desire for recognition continue to leave him overshadowed by stronger teammates. 213 245 273 274

Trivia
- Obito’s chakra reserves are described as greater than twice Kakashi’s before he receives any White Zetsu enhancement. 122
- He once considered transforming into Uchiha Madara in hopes of awakening the Sharingan, but had no idea what Madara looked like. 115
- His white spiral-patterned mask is treated as humorous foreshadowing of “White Mask Obito.” 120
- He jokingly wishes for an ocular technique that could nullify physical attacks, unintentionally foreshadowing Kamui. 274
