Background
Kakashi is the son of Hatake Sakumo, Konoha’s famed White Fang. Sakumo abandoned a crucial mission to save his comrades, causing serious losses for the village; public condemnation—including from those he saved—eventually drove him to take his own life. The incident left Kakashi withdrawn and strongly attached to a mission-first outlook. 66 107
Danzō once attempted to recruit Kakashi into Root, but judged that the darkness in Kakashi’s heart was not yet sufficient for him to accept. 43
After Yu, Obito, and Rin graduate, Kakashi serves under Namikaze Minato as their assistant instructor. Though Obito rejects his authority, Kakashi oversees their first team exercise and exposes the gap between their individual ability and his own battlefield experience. 48 49
Appearance
Kakashi is a white-haired young shinobi who habitually wears a black mask and carries a short sword across his back. His expression is frequently described through his detached, “dead-fish” eyes. 36 48
- Silver-white hair.
- Black face mask.
- Usually carries a short sword or the White Fang Short Sword.
- Reserved posture and listless-looking eyes. 48 51
Personality
Kakashi is calm, terse, and difficult to provoke. He responds to Obito’s boasts with flat indifference, but remains highly attentive in combat and reacts immediately when his teammates are threatened. 48 59
Sakumo’s death shapes Kakashi’s harsh pragmatism. He initially treats mission success as more important than emotional arguments, particularly when Obito protests Root’s sacrifice of civilians. Even so, he redirects Obito toward searching for survivors rather than simply dismissing his anger. 107 206
Despite his detached demeanor, Kakashi can be quietly generous and humble. He lends Yu Hatake family weapons and training, later gives him the White Fang Short Sword outright, and asks Yu for instruction after recognizing that Yu has surpassed him in Hatake swordsmanship. 53 209
Abilities & Skills
Hatake Sword Technique
Kakashi is the inheritor of the Hatake family’s swordsmanship and initially possesses far more refined blade skill than Mikami Yu.
- Uses rapid, precise, and aggressive short-sword attacks capable of breaking Yu’s wooden practice sword. 51
- Combines swordplay with kunai, shuriken, substitutions, and elemental techniques. 49 230
- His swordsmanship carries the lethal, close-range focus associated with Hatake Sakumo’s White Fang legacy. 133 209
- Eventually falls behind Yu’s system-enhanced mastery of the style, but chooses to seek Yu’s guidance rather than resent him. 134 209
Chidori and Lightning Release
Kakashi develops Chidori as a high-speed, piercing Lightning Release technique.
- Chidori delivers exceptional killing and penetration power, but its charging speed initially causes Kakashi to lose peripheral vision. 122 211
- Experiments with channeling Chidori through a blade; his first attempt damages a boulder but wastes lightning chakra and burns his hand. 211
- Develops Chidori Stream, wrapping his body in lightning to discourage close-range attackers and create counterattack opportunities. 239
- Continues developing ranged, sword-based, and paralysis-oriented Lightning Release applications after Yu’s suggestions. 211
Elemental Ninjutsu
Kakashi is proficient in several conventional chakra natures and uses them tactically rather than relying on one style.
- Fire Style — Uses Fire Ball Jutsu in training exchanges. 51
- Water Style — Counters Yu’s Fire Ball Jutsu with Water Shockwave and uses Wild Water Wave in battle. 51 60
- Earth Style — Uses Earth-Style Wall, Hiding in Earth Technique, and Double Suicide Decapitation Technique. 48 49
- Wind Release — Amplifies Yu’s Fire Ball Jutsu with Great Breakthrough during the fight against Amegakure shinobi. 60
Tactical Leadership
Kakashi is an analytical field fighter who can assess threats and organize practical responses under pressure.
- Pursues and exposes the Konoha spy Fujiwara after detecting his attempt to transmit intelligence. 59
- Creates the diversion plan during the raid on the Hazy Moon City watchtower, coordinating Yu’s rear assault with Obito and Rin’s frontal pressure. 118
- Directs defensive responses during Kirigakure’s ambush and follows Yu’s formation orders without hesitation. 246 247
- Officially confirms mission completion after Team Minato destroys a bandit stronghold. 87
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- White Fang Short Sword — Hatake family weapon associated with Sakumo’s legacy. Kakashi later gives it to Mikami Yu in recognition of Yu’s likely Jonin promotion and superior swordsmanship. 49 209
- Hatake family auxiliary short sword — An old blade once used by Sakumo; Kakashi lends it to Yu for Hatake Sword Technique training. 53
- Kunai and shuriken — Used alongside swordsmanship and elemental ninjutsu. 48 49
- Make-Out Paradise — Quietly selects and keeps Jiraiya’s book despite his normally restrained personality. 116
Relationships
- Hatake Sakumo — Father. Sakumo’s death after the failed mission and public condemnation profoundly shapes Kakashi’s mission-first worldview. 66 107
- Namikaze Minato — Teacher and team leader. Minato entrusts Kakashi with assistant-instructor duties and identifies both his strengths and his difficulty with teamwork. 48 49
- Mikami Yu — Teammate, sparring partner, and eventual swordsmanship mentor. Kakashi trains Yu in Hatake swordsmanship, later recognizes Yu’s superior mastery and gifts him the White Fang Short Sword. 51 53 209
- Uchiha Obito — Rival and teammate. Obito openly challenges Kakashi, while Kakashi responds with blunt criticism and repeatedly forces him to confront his shortcomings. 43 130 284
- Nohara Rin — Teammate. Kakashi protects and works alongside Rin during missions, though she is generally more emotionally open than he is. 48 87
- Uchiha Shisui — High-level training partner and ally. By the Kirigakure campaign, both are among the few young shinobi able to spar seriously with Yu. 246 283
Story Role / Major Arcs
Team Minato Formation
Kakashi arrives as Minato’s Chunin assistant instructor and tests the newly formed team’s ability to cooperate. He defeats Obito and Rin individually, but Yu’s coordinated use of substitutions, clones, and Fire Style briefly pressures him into taking the exercise seriously. 48 49
Hatake Swordsmanship Training
Kakashi becomes Yu’s primary swordsmanship sparring partner. His full-strength Hatake Sword Technique overwhelms Yu at first, but the repeated training ultimately enables Yu to develop beyond Kakashi’s own mastery. 51 115 134
Border and Sand Village Operations
During Team Minato’s early missions, Kakashi exposes a Konoha spy, fights alongside Yu against Amegakure shinobi, and protects Yu’s secret surrounding his unusual substitution technique. 59 60
He later participates in frontline battles against Sunagakure, defeats enemies efficiently, helps correct Obito’s overconfidence after the Sharingan awakening, and continues serving as a disciplined member of Minato’s team. 105 130
Chidori Development
After recognizing that Yu has surpassed him in swordsmanship, Kakashi initially becomes frustrated and trains obsessively. Yu encourages him to treat Chidori as a flexible foundation rather than a single assassination move, leading Kakashi toward Chidori Stream and sword-infused Lightning Release. 209 211 239
Kirigakure Campaign
Kakashi joins Yu, Obito, Shisui, and other Konoha shinobi against Kirigakure. He responds rapidly to Fuguki’s large-scale Water Style ambush, assists in the defensive formation, and continues advancing his Chidori Stream techniques while training with Yu and Shisui. 246 247 283
Notable Quotes
“It means you can say those things to me after you become a Chunin.” 48
“Stop talking about useless things. What has happened has already happened. No amount of arguing will change anything.” 206
Trivia
- Kakashi’s apparent indifference hides a strong attachment to the Hatake sword legacy; Yu’s mastery of the style gives him a significant crisis of confidence. 209 211
- He quietly keeps Make-Out Paradise after receiving it from Jiraiya’s collection. 116
- Kakashi cannot initially distinguish Mikami Yu’s real body from his Water Clones without dōjutsu, forcing him to test targets during combat. 49
