Dugu Yan’s parents died before her introduction, leaving her as Dugu Bo’s only living relative. He maintains an estate in Heaven Dou City but rarely returns there unless she is present. He also prepares a safe route to his secluded residence in Sunset Forest so she can visit without encountering the surrounding ten-thousand-year soul beasts 26.

She carries Jade Phosphorous Serpent Poison from birth without initially knowing it. Chu Lan discovers that the toxins are embedded in her blood and bones and traces the condition to an inherited poison associated with Dugu Bo, rather than treating it as an unavoidable defect of her martial soul. Dugu Bo explains the family’s condition to her shortly before her treatment 30.

Her interest in Chu Lan exposes a more sensitive side. She enjoys interpreting his rivalry with Yu Tianheng as jealousy, but becomes furious when he turns his attention toward Ye Lingling. Her reactions range from snapping her chopsticks to chasing him after an argument 25 26 27.
