Xue Qinghe first takes notice of Chu Lan after Xue Beng publicly calls him “Master” and kneels before him at Heaven Dou Royal Academy. Rather than immediately intervening, he sees Xue Beng’s humiliation as politically beneficial and visits Chu Lan out of curiosity. 14

During their private meeting, Xue Qinghe questions Chu Lan’s influence over Xue Beng. Xue Beng’s delivery of a ten-thousand-year golden crystal and immediate obedience to Chu Lan deepen Xue Qinghe’s suspicion that the fourth prince is being controlled or coerced. 14 15

Xue Qinghe initially orders Snake Lance Douluo to kill Chu Lan after learning of Chu Lan’s closeness to Xue Beng. He later reverses course, deciding that Chu Lan is too valuable to waste and could become a useful subordinate if recruited. 21 22
