Military Command Warrant
The generals discussed for a long time that night. Even inside the military tent, Lin Yu felt deeply uncomfortable. After all, none of this was what he wanted. He just did not know what their decision would be.
Morning finally broke beneath a faint red slant of sunlight. Lin Yu did not wait at all and went straight to the commander's tent. Their meeting had only just ended, and Mo Ce had not yet left. He stood there and gave Lin Yu a long, searching look.
"Come in. Saves me the trouble of looking for you." Mo Ce's words left Lin Yu somewhat incredulous. He had actually waited here for him...
Without any delay, he walked in and awaited the outcome. Mo Ce then sighed and said, "After discussing it through the night, my decision is that we absolutely cannot withdraw from Spirit Heaven City, even if the land is drenched in the blood of its people..."
"Heh, drenched in the blood of its people? When you march to war, what do you take those common folk for? Your lives are lives, but theirs are not? The people are the foundation of a nation. Is this how you treat that foundation? If so, this war might as well not be fought." Lin Yu truly had not expected these people to hold such an attitude.
"Tch. What could a petty general like you possibly understand? Leave." Mo Ce directly issued an order to expel him. A flash of killing intent passed through Lin Yu's eyes as he said quietly, "Under the laws of the Ancient Emperor, regardless of one's rank in the army, one may challenge the commanding general upon fulfilling the required conditions."
"Yes, that is indeed such a regulation. Are you trying to break it?" Mo Ce watched quietly from the side. He admitted that Lin Yu had great potential. In the future, Lin Yu might even reach the height he had attained, or go higher still. But looking at him now, Lin Yu was truly acting recklessly and without restraint.
"How would I know whether it can be broken without trying..." In an instant, spiritual power spread across Lin Yu's body, carrying an air as though he ruled beneath heaven. Mo Ce, who had only just entered Body Tempering, narrowed his eyes. He had felt this aura before, and there was no way he could be mistaken. It was an aura he had once sensed from the Ancient Emperor himself.
Back then, he had only been a minor general. Whenever he saw the Ancient Emperor, he would feel an urge to kneel and worship. As time passed, that feeling had gradually faded. Yet now, looking at Lin Yu, a chill crept into his heart.
Lin Yu was still so young, yet he already possessed such strength. This battle seemed to have been a pit from the very beginning—a bottomless pit that would swallow him forever once he jumped in. In a flash, Lin Yu lunged at him.
Mo Ce rose to defend. The moment that kick landed, the entire commander's tent seemed about to collapse. With a wave of his hand, Mo Ce flung Lin Yu away. He looked at him quietly. Even that attack had only been barely within his ability to withstand.
"Tch. I wonder how effective a test with fifty percent of my strength was?" At this point, Mo Ce had completely lost confidence. If Lin Yu truly had used only fifty percent of his strength, as he claimed, would he not be defeated here and now?
Lin Yu threw another punch. With a burst of speed, he pounced like a starving wolf. The generals had sensed the disturbance in the commander's tent not long before. Though they had only just lain down, they quickly rose and rushed over, arriving just in time to witness Lin Yu fighting Mo Ce.
"Before all of you, I am merely a soldier—a soldier without the slightest killing intent. Now, I will let you see whether what I told you was right or wrong..." Lin Yu sidestepped behind Mo Ce with astonishing speed and struck a finger into his back. Mo Ce staggered, his eyes widening as he clearly still had no idea what had happened.
Lin Yu flashed again and said softly, "For abandoning the people and leaving them to their fate." Another blow landed on Mo Ce's abdomen. Lin Yu narrowed his eyes, kicked out, and sent him flying into the commander's seat. The nearby generals could no longer close their mouths. Lin Yu had fought Mo Ce until he had not the slightest ability to fight back...
"Cough, cough, cough..." Seated in the chair, Mo Ce spat out a mouthful of blood. After taking two breaths, he finally continued, "Since that is the case, I have nothing more to say. Tell me, then—what exactly is it that you want?" Upon hearing this, the generals understood that Lin Yu must have issued a challenge. Otherwise, things would not have turned out like this.
"Tch. What I want is for all the people of the city to leave temporarily, then return after the war is over. Since that is so, and since our army's commander is incompetent, I, Lin Yu, am willing to accept a military command warrant and take the enemy commander's dog head." Lin Yu's words were aimed at everyone before him. Were they incompetent? Perhaps they were. Otherwise, they would not have done such things.
Lin Yu continued, "I refuse to believe that, with my methods, I cannot take their heads."
"Lin Yu, what do you mean by that? Are we not supposed to doubt you?" The night before, every general had already learned that the soldier who brought the report was named Lin Yu, and that his intelligence came from having infiltrated deep into the enemy army.
"Tch. Isn't that why I called you incompetent? Incompetence is incompetence, so stop prattling. Commander, may I accept this military command warrant or not?" Hou Sheng, standing nearby, was sweating coldly for Lin Yu. He had also strongly supported Lin Yu's proposal last night, but there had still been many opponents!
Mo Ce straightened his body. With a flick of his hand, an insignia appeared in his palm. He continued, "Since Lin Yu has accepted a military command warrant to take the enemy commander's head, he shall receive a reward if he succeeds. If he fails, he shall be made an example before all. Do you still accept this order?"
"I accept. Why would I not?" Lin Yu had great confidence in his own strength. If even that was not enough, then he could only use that thing.
In Mo Ce's eyes, not a shred of appreciation for Lin Yu remained. All he wanted now was to kill Lin Yu—kill him. This was the first time he had been humiliated before all the generals, and the one who had shattered that desolate calm was actually a soldier under his command.
They gradually departed. Hou Sheng walked over to Lin Yu and said, "You truly should not have challenged the commander. He is a petty, narrow-minded man. I fear your days ahead will not be easy. Forget it. Since you have already accepted the military command warrant, I will not say more. Handle it yourself. I'm leaving." Lin Yu still held the same respect and reverence as before for his commanding general.
"Petty and narrow-minded?" Lin Yu asked faintly. He cast another distant glance, then continued, "If that is the case, then I will make him pay a price written in blood." Lin Yu gave his comrades in the distance one last deep look, turned, and left the military camp, returning to the Flame Emperor Army camp.
