Background / History

Tianling City campaign

Mo Ce commanded the Ancient Imperial City’s forces when war began against the Flame Emperor. He rallied the army to battle and noticed Lin Yu’s extraordinary performance after the young soldier killed numerous enemy troops. 24

When Lin Yu returned from infiltrating the enemy camp with intelligence about an ambush designed to massacre Tianling City’s soldiers and civilians, Mo Ce permitted him to report but questioned his credibility. He regarded Lin Yu’s infiltration methods as suspicious and dismissed the warning as impractical. 26

After an overnight discussion with the other generals, Mo Ce decided not to withdraw from Spirit Heaven City even if doing so meant civilian bloodshed. Lin Yu challenged him under an ancient military regulation, defeated him inside the command tent, and accepted a military command warrant to eliminate the enemy leadership. The public defeat turned Mo Ce’s skepticism into open hatred. 27

Attempt to claim the victory

Lin Yu’s assassination campaign shattered the enemy command structure, but Mo Ce later had him returned to the Ancient Imperial City as a prisoner. Before the Ancient Emperor, Mo Ce claimed credit for Zhang Shuai’s death and accused Lin Yu of being an enemy spy who had murdered an allied general. 31

Lin Yu countered by exposing Mo Ce’s defeat, his broken promise to Tianling City’s people, and the seizure of the enemy heads Lin Yu had collected as proof of his military warrant. 31 32

Execution

Mo Ce attempted to disprove Lin Yu’s claims by locating the eighteen severed heads tied to the warrant. Lin Yu ultimately produced seventeen heads, six additional heads belonging to powerful cultivators, and the location of another buried head. The evidence proved Lin Yu’s achievements and revealed threats Mo Ce had concealed. 33

The Ancient Emperor ordered Mo Ce and the generals under his command executed. Mo Ce’s severed head was presented to the emperor afterward. 33 34

Personality

Mo Ce is authoritative, suspicious, and strongly attached to military control. He initially recognizes Lin Yu as a talented soldier, yet distrusts his intelligence because of the same covert methods that made the report possible. 24 26

He is willing to accept civilian casualties rather than abandon a strategic position, placing his judgment as commander above Lin Yu’s humanitarian objections. After being defeated, he becomes vindictive and attempts to protect his standing through false accusations and stolen credit. 27 31

Mo Ce had newly entered the Body Tempering realm during his confrontation with Lin Yu. He could initially repel Lin Yu with a strike, but was ultimately overwhelmed and left unable to continue fighting. 27
