Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| One-Tomoe Sharingan | 161 | Orena first awakened it after being mocked for her appearance, demonstrating the role of intense emotional stimulation in its activation. 161 |
| Two-Tomoe Sharingan | 160 | Orena's eye developed a second tomoe amid anger and humiliation during her confrontation with Naruto. 160 |
| Three-Tomoe Sharingan | 1, 166 | Goenji's predecessor awakened three tomoe after his companions died. At this stage, the eye provides exceptional dynamic vision, chakra perception, copying potential, and heightened combat analysis; Orena later reaches the same stage. 1 166 |
| Mangekyō Sharingan | 47, 88 | An evolved form with user-specific powers. Shisui manifests a skeletal Susanoo, while Obito develops a destructive reflection-based ability. 47 88 |
Appearance
When activated, the user's pupils contract and tomoe appear around them. Goenji's Three-Tomoe Sharingan is described as making ordinary movement appear slowed down several times. 1
- One tomoe — a single mark appears within the iris. 161
- Two tomoe — a second mark develops as the eye evolves. 160
- Three tomoe — three tomoe rotate around the pupil during heightened observation or combat. 1 2
- Mangekyō Sharingan — an advanced evolved state distinct from the ordinary tomoe pattern. 47 88
Abilities & Skills
Dynamic Vision and Chakra Perception
The Sharingan greatly enhances visual processing. Its users can follow rapid movement, observe muscle exertion, and perceive chakra circulation within another ninja's body. 1 6
- Detects concealed threats, including the wire trap that Goenji spotted before Konoha's force triggered it. 2
- Lets users read close-range attacks as if they were moving in slow motion. 2
- Reveals chakra flow, helping Goenji analyze the mechanics of the Body Flicker Technique. 6
- Tracks distant combatants, their movements, and chakra pathways during battles such as Minato's clash with A and Killer B. 8
- Does not match the Byakugan's long-range reconnaissance; Ao escaped Goenji and Shisui by using the Byakugan to survey the area. 39
Copying and Combat Analysis
The Sharingan allows its bearer to study and reproduce observable movements, making it especially valuable for taijutsu, shuriken techniques, swordsmanship, and basic ninjutsu. 2 24
- Goenji studies Kumogakure taijutsu rather than immediately counterattacking, treating the enemy's movements as material for his own growth. 2
- Its perception assists with Manipulating Windmill, an Uchiha wire-and-shuriken technique requiring highly precise control. 4
- Goenji refines his Body Flicker Technique by observing other Konoha shinobi's footwork, chakra control, and muscle movement. 6
- He copies aspects of Ryoma's swordsmanship and uses them as a basis for future fire-enhanced blade techniques. 24 37
- Copying is not absolute: observing chakra circulation alone is insufficient to reproduce specialized clan arts such as the Akimichi techniques or Aburame insect manipulation. 4 24
- Advanced techniques dependent on specialized knowledge, such as Flying Thunder God’s sealing marks, remain beyond simple visual imitation. 8
Genjutsu
The Sharingan is recognized as a powerful medium for hypnotic genjutsu, causing opponents to avoid eye contact or immediately dispel illusions when an Uchiha activates it. 1 9 114
- Shisui uses his Three-Tomoe Sharingan to manipulate Kirigakure shinobi from extreme range, causing them to attack one another before he enters direct combat. 36 37
- Goenji uses sound to guide the Seven Ninja Swordsmen's attention toward his eyes, though they quickly recognize and break the illusion. 114
- Genjutsu can be resisted or released when the target recognizes the threat and responds quickly enough. 9 114
Mangekyō Sharingan
The Mangekyō Sharingan is an emotion-driven evolution whose abilities reflect the user's circumstances and needs. Goenji believes his detachment from the shinobi world and his inability to feel overwhelming grief prevent him from awakening it naturally. 1 44 87
- Shisui Uchiha manifests a skeletal Susanoo powerful enough to shield himself and Goenji from a combined barrage of Water Release and explosive tags. Its use leaves his left eye bleeding. 47
- Obito Uchiha awakens a separate Mangekyō ability later called Jiayu Mirror, which can reflect ninjutsu or physical attacks within his field of vision after analyzing them. 88 112
- Mangekyō abilities are dangerous partly because unfamiliar powers are difficult to prepare countermeasures against. Goenji specifically worries that Obito's altered awakening may produce an ability unlike the Kamui he expected. 87
History
Goenji enters the Third Shinobi World War already possessing a Three-Tomoe Sharingan, awakened by his predecessor after the deaths of his companions. The eye immediately becomes central to his survival: it gives him the perception to detect ambushes, analyze enemies, and build a combat style around observation and rapid adaptation. 1 2
During the war, Goenji uses the Sharingan to improve his Body Flicker, study Kumogakure taijutsu, manipulate shuriken and steel wire, copy swordsmanship, and execute carefully timed basic techniques such as Substitution. 4 6 24 27 Its value also makes him a target; Kumogakure and Kirigakure shinobi repeatedly seek to kill Uchiha users and seize their eyes. 3 47
After Obito's apparent death, Kakashi receives one of Obito's Sharingan as a final gift. Uchiha elders argue that the eye must be reclaimed, but Goenji opposes them, citing Obito's wishes, Kakashi's battlefield value, and the political damage such a seizure would cause. 87 88 89
In the later peaceful era, Orena demonstrates that the Sharingan's emotional evolution continues across a new generation. She awakens one tomoe after being insulted, develops two tomoe during another emotional outburst, and eventually uses a Three-Tomoe Sharingan in combat. 160 161 166
Notable Wielders
| Wielder | Known stage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Uchiha Goenji | Three tomoe | Uses the eye for trap detection, copying, chakra analysis, genjutsu, and combat prediction; cannot naturally awaken Mangekyō due to emotional detachment. 1 2 44 |
| Shisui Uchiha | Three tomoe; Mangekyō | A feared genjutsu specialist who later manifests a skeletal Susanoo. 37 47 |
| Obito Uchiha | Mangekyō | Develops a powerful reflection ability and later places Yagura under Sharingan genjutsu. 88 112 113 |
| Kakashi Hatake | Implanted Sharingan | Receives Obito's eye before Obito's apparent death and uses it alongside Chidori in battle. 87 98 |
| Orena | One, two, and three tomoe | Her emotional reactions trigger early evolution; she later activates three tomoe to track Naruto's Shadow Clones. 160 161 166 |
| Tekka Uchiha | One tomoe | A Chunin Uchiha whose lower-stage Sharingan contrasts with Goenji's three tomoe. 2 |
| Inabi Uchiha | One tomoe | Seeks to understand Goenji's Three-Tomoe Sharingan and is outpaced during their sparring match. 15 |
Limitations
- The eye's evolution depends on powerful emotion; emotional distance can prevent progression to the Mangekyō stage. 1 44
- Superior perception does not replace physical ability, experience, or specialized knowledge. Goenji can see Flying Thunder God’s operation but cannot reproduce its sealing-based mechanism. 8
- Clan techniques and biological systems cannot necessarily be copied merely by observing their chakra pathways. 4 24
- Skilled opponents can avoid eye contact, resist genjutsu, or exploit the user's limits through coordinated attacks. 9 114
- Mangekyō techniques carry substantial physical strain; Shisui's Susanoo causes his eye to bleed after use. 47
