Background / History
War service and defection
Orochimaru fought alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade during the Second Shinobi World War. Jiraiya’s accounts of the Great Toad Sage’s prophecy introduced him to the possibility of a catastrophe that would leave the Shinobi World depleted and lifeless. His wartime experiences also convinced him of human life’s fragility, motivating his pursuit of immortality and a complete understanding of ninjutsu 295 310.
During the Third Shinobi World War, Orochimaru commanded Konoha’s forces and retained information about every shinobi promoted to Chūnin under his command. His reports informed Konoha’s leadership of the Third Raikage’s death, after which Hiruzen ordered Minato’s team to reinforce his position 2 6 135.
His forbidden experiments included using people from Konoha as test subjects. Jiraiya rejected his claim that preparation for the prophesied disaster justified those methods. By the events of Chapter 35, Orochimaru had defected more than a year earlier and reportedly disappeared in the Land of Bears; Hiruzen declined to devote resources to finding him 35 310.
Akatsuki and independent research
Orochimaru joined Akatsuki, but subsequently disappeared from its surveillance. Pain ordered the organization to locate him because he possessed too much information about its operations 115 157.
He maintained research bases through connections with political leaders, criminals, and wealthy civilians. In the Land of Hot Water, Oyashiro En supplied experimental subjects for several years and helped establish his facilities. Orochimaru used a clone during their negotiations, preventing Tonbo from confronting his real body 194.
Initially, Orochimaru remembered Tonbo as an intelligence specialist unlikely to become a Jōnin. Reports of Tonbo troubling Akatsuki’s leader forced him to reconsider. He monitored Tonbo through subordinates before approaching him personally after the Windrest Valley mission 135 141.
Chūnin Exams and Konoha’s invasion
Orochimaru negotiated with Danzo to have Tonbo sent away during the Chūnin Exams. In return, he offered technology for controlling the Sharingan and Hashirama Cells. His stated plan was to kill Hiruzen publicly; obtaining Sasuke was his principal objective, while destroying Konoha served as a demonstration of strength 182 206.
He infiltrated the exams using a transformation that changed his chakra signature enough to evade Tonbo’s senses. In the Forest of Death, he overwhelmed Team 7, exploited Sasuke’s resentment toward Itachi, and offered him greater power. Anko identified his return from the mutilated faces of three dead Kusagakure ninja 203 209.
Anko and Teksen Shiso confronted him, but their battle ended with Orochimaru withdrawing after their combined elemental attacks threatened him. During the subsequent invasion, he attacked Hiruzen and summoned the First and Second Hokage through Impure World Reincarnation. He killed his former teacher, but emerged from the invasion with severely damaged hands 210 235 243 430.
Otogakure’s personnel were evacuated and scattered before Konoha’s forces pressured the Land of Rice Fields to dissolve the village. Orochimaru then sought Tsunade’s medical expertise to restore his hands 243.
Sasuke’s training and reincarnation attempt
Orochimaru trained Sasuke in combat, emphasizing feints, unpredictability, and tactical judgment. Their arrangement was openly exploitative: Sasuke wanted the strength to kill Itachi, while Orochimaru intended to possess his body 266.
After studying Sasuke for more than a year, Orochimaru discovered Tonbo’s implanted nerves. He correctly interpreted them as interference with his reincarnation plans and became interested in acquiring the technique. Research on the nerves later enabled him to restore hand control temporarily during his fight with Four-Tails Naruto 266 267 291.
Orochimaru subsequently proposed cooperation with Tonbo against Akatsuki and the prophesied catastrophe. He disclosed his investigation of altered historical records, his consultation with the White Snake Sage, and his theory that the Sharingan was a safeguard created by the Sage of Six Paths. Tonbo agreed not to interfere, but warned that Sasuke would survive Orochimaru’s possession attempt 294 295 296 297.
When his body weakened, Orochimaru attempted to take Sasuke’s body. Sasuke defeated him within his spiritual dimension, but Orochimaru had prepared for that outcome: if possession failed, Sasuke would receive his power, memories, and combat experience, while his remaining body could strengthen Kabuto. Reports of his death spread after Sasuke released his experimental subjects 309 310 311.
Revival and the Technology Development Bureau
Sasuke revived Orochimaru during the Fourth Shinobi World War and requested his help in discovering the truth. Orochimaru agreed, recovered his chakra from Kabuto, and later sought Tonbo’s assistance in gathering biological information about the Ten-Tails 351 356.
After the war, Tonbo proposed a village-funded research department and asked Orochimaru to teach his youngest son, Keigo. Orochimaru accepted the funding arrangement, while Kakashi required Tonbo to supervise him. Kakashi ultimately appointed Orochimaru director of the Technology Development Bureau and Tonbo deputy director 368 372.
In Laboratory Thirteen, Orochimaru accepted Urashiki Ōtsutsuki’s preserved body as a research subject, recruited Kabuto, and began investigating Ōtsutsuki biology and ocular powers. His later work included defenses against Precognition and the secretive Locking the Future project 371 372 374 456 468.
Appearance
- Snake-like eyes — described as especially chilling when he discusses the material hidden inside Sasuke 266.
- Long tongue — frequently extends his tongue or licks his lips during conversation 194 266.
- Flowing long hair — remains a recognizable feature even when he is over 140 years old 479.
- Monstrous serpent form — reveals a massive snake-like true body when Sasuke attacks him; his remains are identified as a White Phosphorus Snake 309 310.
- Changing disguises — wears Akatsuki’s cloud-patterned robe before leaving the organization and later impersonates an Otogakure teacher 157 203 213.
Personality
Orochimaru is calculating, secretive, and prepared to use others for research or personal advancement. He negotiates through mutual benefit rather than loyalty, using Danzo’s resentment, Sasuke’s desire for revenge, and Kabuto’s need for recognition to secure cooperation 182 243 266.
His scientific curiosity can outweigh hostility. He admires Tonbo’s nerve technique even after recognizing it as an obstacle to possession, and he readily revises his assumptions when new evidence appears. He also places unusually high value on talented assistants and researchers 135 267 374.
Immortality remains his central ambition, but he also genuinely prepares for the Shinobi World’s possible destruction. His contingency for losing to Sasuke deliberately creates stronger successors rather than allowing his accumulated knowledge to disappear 296 310.
After revival, he becomes livelier and more socially adaptable. He expresses interest in parenthood and claims to have abandoned his earlier reckless experimental methods, although Konoha continues to monitor him and several characters remain distrustful 368 372 378.
