Background & History
A is the Third Raikage’s son and designated heir. Though still young when Chiba Shun first encounters him, his chakra presence and combat ability are already assessed as Jōnin-level. He serves as part of the Kumogakure escort for Shun’s diplomatic mission to Konoha, but departs after the group reaches the border. 13
He later grows into one of Kumogakure’s foremost close-combat fighters and a trusted supporter of the village’s reforms. His father places him within the Ninja Academy as vice principal to demonstrate the Raikage’s commitment to centralized education, though A does not initially manage the Academy’s daily affairs. 47
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Release Chakra Mode
A specializes in high-speed Lightning Release techniques that reinforce his body and combat movement.
- Uses the Lightning Release Body Flicker Technique to intercept Killer B’s sword strike and save Chiba Shun during a sparring match. 22
- Personally teaches Sakai Yushi the finer points of the Lightning Release Body Flicker Technique, allowing Yushi to avoid its earlier injuries and excessive medicine costs. 22
- Develops Lightning Release Chakra Mode through direct combat; by the end of the four-way sparring session, he has reached its beginner stage. 89
- His armor becomes strong enough to charge through Chiba Shun’s Fire Release: Searing Migraine, though Chiba can briefly disrupt him with an illusion. 88
Taijutsu and Physical Strength
A is a direct, exceptionally durable close-range fighter.
- Initially overwhelms Shennong through superior physical strength, forcing Shennong to open six weakened Eight Gates to survive. 52
- Endures Shennong’s amplified assault and counters the final attack despite serious injury. 52
- Routinely pressures Chiba Shun in close combat, forcing him to rely on Shadow Clones, Earth Release, Underground Movement, and retreat. 88
- Nearly trades fatal blows with Sakai Yushi: Sakai’s sword pierces him while A’s punch is about to strike Sakai before the Third Raikage intervenes. 89
Command and Tactical Judgment
A combines frontline strength with increasing leadership responsibilities.
- Commands the forty-one-member elite force assigned to raid Orochimaru’s hidden laboratory. 61
- Helps sustain the false “Third Raikage” deception during the raid, using an illusion to mislead a suspicious giant snake before killing it. 62
- Coordinates the rescue of Yūi Masayoshi and the seizure of Orochimaru’s research materials and prisoners. 62
- Becomes a village adviser and assumes responsibility for the Ninja Academy, positioning him as part of Kumogakure’s future leadership. 107 108
Story Role / Major Arcs
Konoha Mission and Swordsmanship Exchange
A first observes Chiba Shun during the Konoha exchange mission, recognizing his unusual Four-Sword Style and suggesting that he spar with Killer B. 13 19
After returning to Kumogakure, A gives Chiba a chakra-conducting sword acquired from a defeated Kirigakure Jōnin. He later arranges the meeting between Chiba, Sakai Yushi, and Killer B that leads to the development of the Five- and Six-Sword Styles. 19 20 21
Eight-Tails Crisis
When the Eight-Tails breaks free, A is thrown aside by the beast’s initial rampage. Chiba protects him with an Earth-Style Wall, while Sakai later carries both the injured A and chakra-depleted Chiba away from the battlefield. 28 29
The incident reinforces A’s connection to Killer B and the importance of properly controlling Tailed Beast power within Kumogakure.
Academy Reform and Orochimaru Raid
Following the Third Raikage’s political consolidation, A is appointed vice principal of the expanded Ninja Academy. His role is initially symbolic, but he supports Chiba’s reform plans and agrees to request access to newly acquired jutsu for student training. 47
He later commands Kumogakure’s elite raid on Orochimaru’s secret base. The operation successfully recovers experimental subjects, bloodline users, sealing equipment, and research materials before Orochimaru retaliates against Kumogakure itself. 61 62
Four-Way Sparring Match
A participates in a highly destructive free-for-all against Chiba Shun, Killer B, and Sakai Yushi. He withstands fire, illusions, sword attacks, and close-range techniques while displaying a major breakthrough in Lightning Release Chakra Mode. 88 89
The sparring ends only when the Third Raikage stops A and Sakai from killing one another. The Raikage considers the injuries worthwhile because each participant gains a crucial advancement. 89
Rise to Adviser
A becomes a village adviser before Chiba’s own appointment. His promotion marks his increasing political importance and supports his eventual position as Kumogakure’s future leader. 107
After Chiba joins the advisory council, A takes responsibility for the Ninja Academy while Chiba manages the Intelligence Department and Barrier Division. 108
Relationships
- Third Raikage — Father and political mentor. A is his heir, receives personal instruction in Lightning Release Armor, and is placed in leadership roles to prepare him for Kumogakure’s future. 47 89 108
- Killer B — Close companion and fellow Kumogakure powerhouse. A supervises B’s swordsmanship exchanges, monitors the danger of the Eight-Tails, and fights alongside him during major operations. 21 61 62
- Chiba Shun — Ally, beneficiary of A’s support, and political associate. A gives Shun a chakra-conducting sword, protects him during sparring, helps arrange training opportunities, and later serves beside him as an adviser. 19 22 107 108
- Sakai Yushi — Student in Lightning Release Body Flicker Technique and later a rival. A’s guidance accelerates Yushi’s progress, but their sparring eventually becomes dangerous enough to require the Third Raikage’s intervention. 22 89
- Yūi Masayoshi — Kumogakure shinobi rescued during the raid on Orochimaru’s laboratory. A recognizes him immediately and removes his sealing restraints. 62
- Yugito — Fellow jinchūriki whose safety remains a village priority. A supports the broader effort to develop reliable Tailed Beast control within Kumogakure. 89 97
Trivia
- A addresses the Third Raikage as “Lord Raikage,” rather than “Father,” when discussing Academy affairs in a formal setting. 47
- Chiba’s Academy evaluation gives A a 4.9 in wisdom, a score that contributes to Chiba’s notably low practical-combat rating under the same system. 48
- Killer B can imitate A’s voice and mannerisms well enough to parody him while disguising himself as the Third Raikage. 61 62
