Background / History
Early life and promotion
Chiba Shun grew up impoverished in wartime Kumogakure and was orphaned by the Second Shinobi World War. Knowledge from a previous life gave him unusual insight, but poor nutrition, limited instruction, and an exploitative squad leader initially prevented him from turning that knowledge into strength. Sakai Yushi, his closest surviving companion, secretly taught him the Body Flicker Technique, while Shun developed and shared the Three-Sword Style. 1 2
At thirteen, Shun killed an exposed Konoha intelligence shinobi despite losing one of his swords during the fight. The kill secured his promotion to Chunin and gave him enough money to finally improve his diet, equipment, and chakra training. 1 2
Ninja Academy reformer
Rather than lead a Chunin squad, Shun chose to work at Kumogakure’s Ninja Academy. He considered the institution poorly organized and began reforming it through practical chakra-control lessons, expanded recruitment, talent scouting, and selective private tutoring. 2 5 8
Shun became a central figure in the Academy’s growth. He helped cultivate dozens of overlooked children, funded promising students through mission income, promoted the Will of Lightning, and repeatedly used the Academy to develop Kumogakure’s future shinobi. 8 21 30
Diplomat, strategist, and battlefield shinobi
Shun’s proposal to undermine Sakumo Hatake through Konoha’s internal politics earned him an S-rank mission to infiltrate Konoha and contact Danzo. He returned with thirty-seven non-Lightning Release techniques, including two A-rank jutsu, and reported Danzo’s agreement to discredit the White Fang. 12 19
During Kumogakure’s conflict with Konoha, Shun proved that he was more than an administrator. He used Earth Release, traps, underground movement, and unconventional swordsmanship to defeat enemy squads and create openings for A. His first successful combat use of Earth Release: Mountain Earth Technique crushed six Konoha Chunin. 18 25
Adviser of Kumogakure
After completing thirteen S-rank missions, eleven independently, Shun was appointed one of Kumogakure’s five advisers. He chose to oversee the Intelligence Department and Barrier Division, favoring long-term military development over diplomatic prestige. 108
As an adviser, Shun expanded covert intelligence training at the Academy, monitored Hyuga Clan vulnerabilities, pursued sealing and summoning research, and directed operations concerning the Tsuchigumo Clan’s Natural Energy techniques. 111 117 119
Personality
Shun is pragmatic, observant, and intensely cautious. He prefers preparation, battlefield deception, traps, disguises, and indirect political pressure to straightforward contests of strength. He is keenly aware of the gap between his own abilities and those of exceptional fighters such as A, Killer B, Sakai Yushi, Nagato, and Fugaku Uchiha. 36 59 78 106 117
He is also ambitious and morally flexible. Shun has manipulated enemy clans, used children as decoys to expose infiltrators, experimented on prisoners, and treated dangerous encounters as opportunities to test new techniques. 30 42 45 76
Despite this ruthlessness, Shun is deeply invested in his students. He provides food, money, techniques, training opportunities, and individualized guidance, even when doing so leaves him in debt. He sees himself as a teacher responsible for passing on the Will of Lightning. 5 56 95 124
Abilities & Skills
Earth Release
Earth Release is Shun’s strongest chakra nature and the foundation of his combat style. His technical breadth allows him to simplify hand seals, reshape existing techniques, control terrain, and chain multiple Earth Release attacks together. 5 30 59
- Earth-Style Wall — Learned as his first elemental ninjutsu; later reduced from ten hand seals to three. 5 30
- Underground Movement — Used for evasive movement, ambushes, and escaping stronger close-range opponents. 18 45 105
- Heartless Decapitation Technique — Drags targets underground and leaves them buried or suffocated. 37 45
- Mountain Earth Technique — A-rank technique that creates massive closing rock formations; first successfully cast in battle against Konoha forces. 25
- Swamp of the Underworld — Used to immobilize or restrict stronger foes, though its casting time and chakra cost can make it risky. 37 78 104
- Earth Clone and Shadow Clone combinations — Uses clones to protect allies, bait opponents, conceal his real body, and maintain layered attacks. 36 37 105
- Rock Golem — A self-created A-rank Earth Release construct, standing five to six meters tall. 127
Genjutsu, Yin Release, and soul techniques
Shun developed Yin Release theory by comparing genjutsu with sensory techniques, dōjutsu, Yamanaka methods, and other soul-based abilities. He can use illusions in actual combat, but advanced techniques demand greater Yin Release and mental endurance than he naturally possesses. 42 43 57
- Combat genjutsu — Can induce sleep, hallucinations, immobilization, and behavioral control against sufficiently vulnerable targets. Stronger souls can resist or break his illusions. 42 43
- Mind Body Switch Technique — Transfers his consciousness into another body. He used it to possess Jashin cultists, interfere with an Elite Jonin, and seize control of the Hanzō Human Puppet. 76 78 87
- Jashin experimentation — Contact with Jashin’s phantom greatly improved Shun’s Yin Release and soul-related techniques, but left him nearly comatose for two days. 76 77
- Demonic Illusion: Tree Binding Death — Copied and studied the A-rank technique, but initially lacked the Yin Release needed to use it reliably. 43
Sensory ninjutsu
Shun later learned to use Mind’s Eye of the Kagura, allowing him to perceive chakra through obstacles and exploit environments such as the Hidden Mist Technique. 45 78
- Uses sensory abilities to detect threats, track opponents underground, avoid patrols, and direct team attacks. 14 78 85
- His sensory range and sensitivity remain below Maki Uzumaki’s specialized version of the technique. 45 48
Multi-Sword Style
Shun created the Three-Sword Style from his knowledge of Killer B’s future Eight-Sword Style, then developed it into a Four-Sword Style. He can wield blades with his hands, mouth, and leg movements, creating attack angles that surprise conventional swordsmen. 1 18 21
- Developed the airborne-blade principle that enabled Killer B and Sakai Yushi to advance toward the Five- and Six-Sword Styles. 21
- Uses swordsmanship primarily as a close-range fallback; he recognizes that his talent for ninjutsu exceeds his talent for taijutsu and swordsmanship. 21 22
- Is outmatched in direct sword duels by specialists such as Killer B, Sakai Yushi, and the Root swordsmanship operative. 9 21 45
Fire Release and Blue Release
Shun possesses Fire and Lightning affinities in addition to his stronger Earth affinity. He combined Fire and Earth Release into attacks approaching S-rank power, then later mastered Blue Release by fusing Fire and Lightning chakra. 104 117
- Blue Release — A Fire-and-Lightning Kekkei Genkai developed with Hayata’s assistance and informed by Matatabi’s power. 112 117
- Fire Release: Searing Migraine — Large-scale fire attack used during the four-way spar with A, Killer B, and Sakai Yushi. 88
- Fire-and-Earth combinations — Uses Earth Dragon Bullet and Fire Release together to produce attacks stronger than either element alone. 104 105
Sealing and summoning
- Learned Sealing Scroll use from Asano Yujin and later pursued B-rank sealing knowledge through the Barrier Division. 19 111
- Mastered Sasori’s Summoning Technique only after Ayana and Yuan Ying Xunyi completed the summoning formula research. 107
- Pursued a summoning contract with ninja beasts through the Barrier Division. 108
Equipment
- Long swords — Uses multiple swords in conjunction with his Four-Sword Style. 18 21
- Chakra-conducting sword — Received a superior blade from battlefield spoils after assisting A against a Kirigakure Jonin. 18 20
- Explosive Tags — Carries and deploys them in traps, including sealed underground detonations. 12 78
- Sealing Scrolls — Used to store corpses, enemy materials, and strategically valuable targets. 19 36
Relationships
- Sakai Yushi — Closest friend and family-like companion. They exchange money, techniques, swordsmanship insight, and training support; Shun gave Yushi his A-rank jutsu opportunity so Yushi could learn the Lightning Release Stimulation Method. 1 2 20
- A — Initially doubtful of Shun’s frontline value, but came to respect him after their joint battles. A later supported Shun’s rise within Kumogakure and took charge of the Ninja Academy at Shun’s recommendation. 18 30 108
- Killer B — Swordsmanship sparring partner and collaborator in the development of Multi-Sword Style. Shun’s provocations of the Eight-Tails inadvertently helped B advance toward becoming a Perfect Jinchuriki. 21 89
- Yugito — Student, squad member, and the Two-Tails’ jinchuriki. Shun guides her training, protects her during missions, and encourages cooperation between her and Matatabi. 44 106 112
- Matatabi — Initially distrustful of Shun, but gradually cooperates with him through mission rewards, sensory support, and Yugito’s training. 106 112 117
- Ayana, Shosuke, and Hayata — Shun’s First Squad disciples. He trained them through dangerous missions, supplied individualized resources, and formally disbanded the squad once they could pursue separate paths. 76 95
- Taniguchi Shinma and Yuan Ying Xunyi — Members of Shun’s later squad alongside Yugito. He selected them for their potential in combat support and sealing research. 97 117
- The Third Raikage — Shun’s political patron and village leader. The Raikage repeatedly endorsed his missions, rewarded his contributions, and appointed him adviser. 19 51 108
- Aoki Yuyi — Academy superior and collaborator. Their relationship shifted from tension and suspicion to cooperation in education, Academy reform, and covert intelligence training. 6 111 124
- Maki Uzumaki — Close collaborator in sensory and medical development. Maki created the A-rank Mind’s Eye of the Kagura and repeatedly treated Shun’s injuries. 45 87
