After the battle, Jaya could only be described as hell on earth. Severed limbs and chunks of flesh lay everywhere. Corpses sprawled in every direction, each bearing the marks of a gruesome death and giving off a piercing stench.
Under the blazing sun, Undead Soldiers carried the bodies together at Crocodile's command, piling them into a massive mountain of corpses.
"That's the last batch." Ulysses walked over with his cane and told the soldiers to toss the bodies onto the pile. He stopped beside Crocodile, checked the count, and said, "There are seventeen survivors. They've all been gathered in the woods farther away. As long as the wind doesn't change, they won't be affected."
"Got it. Light it up."
The Undead Legion had no use for deadweight. Even cannon fodder had to be capable of holding its own at sea. Crocodile had nothing but contempt for the pirates of Mock Town, who might as well have been children playing pretend.
He was only bothering to burn the bodies because of Loa's orders, to keep the plague from spreading.
Crocodile gave the new soldier holding a torch beside him a wicked grin. "What's wrong, Bellamy? Can't bring yourself to do it because your friends are in there?"
Bellamy, brought back through Resurrection because of the fifty-five-million-berry bounty on his head, shuddered at those words and bit down on lips he could no longer feel.
Even now, he could hardly believe someone could truly use Resurrection to bring back the dead. But his own death was real. No one could fake what he had experienced firsthand.
