Snow-white seagulls flew across the azure sky in orderly flocks. Waves swept up by the sea breeze tirelessly crashed against the shore again and again.
"Unknown waters, an unknown island."
Loa panted as he sighed, then helplessly plopped down onto the beach.
Just moments ago, Loa had run all the way around the island, exhausting himself half to death before reaching that conclusion. Now, he could be certain of one thing: if this was not some legendary prank, then he had truly transmigrated.
The instant noodle cup half-buried in the sand beneath his feet was proof enough.
Loa had originally been an office worker who had only recently graduated. Work was exhausting every day. During the rare May Day holiday, he had bought bread, instant noodles, and soda, ready to pull an all-nighter grinding dungeons with his teammates. He had just carried his instant noodles over to his computer and had not even reached for the power button before losing consciousness.
When he came to, he found himself standing on a golden beach, still holding that cup of instant noodles with sausage in it. What blew toward him was not the stifling air of his cramped rental apartment, mixed with sweat, foot odor, cigarette smoke, and instant noodle fumes, but an incredibly fresh sea breeze carrying a faint salty tang.
At that moment, Loa was completely dumbfounded. The sudden change had crashed his brain for a while, and he only came back to himself when the instant noodles in his hand tipped over and boiling water scalded his feet.
The fear and unease brought by this unknown situation drove him to run madly around the island, trying to find even a trace of human habitation and ask what was going on. But to his disappointment, this truly was a deserted island, and it was probably not even as large as the old residential district near his rental. Beyond the limits of his sight lay the blue sea. This was a genuine isolated island.
Sitting on the scorching beach, Loa shifted his butt, finding it hard to bear the heat of the sun-baked sand. He braced himself on his knees and stood, then staggered over to a coconut tree at the edge of the beach to rest in its shade.
"Did I really transmigrate?"
Loa examined the white flip-flops on his feet, their rubber straps snapped, and muttered absentmindedly, "I transmigrated for no reason at all?"
He did not know where this was, but according to transmigration traditions, it definitely was not his original world. The familiar people and familiar things had all drifted away from him. His former attachments and regrets no longer had anything to do with him.
Suddenly, he became agitated. "Are you screwing with me?! A girl invited me to clear 5H today! I get paid the day after tomorrow! Can't I live extravagantly for a few days?! I haven't even eaten din—"
At that point, Loa abruptly shut his mouth and touched his stomach. Indeed, he had not eaten dinner yet!
Thinking of that, Loa raised his head to look at the coconuts hanging in the tree. He swallowed, and a trace of determination flashed through his eyes.
"I refuse to become a starving ghost!"
Loa had no idea whether there were ferocious beasts deeper on the island, so he gave up on exploring it. He took off his T-shirt, stretched it straight, and looked at the coconut tree. Mm, great. Not long enough.
After looking around, Loa furtively took off his pants, leaving himself in only boxer briefs. He had learned this tree-climbing method from a variety show: wrap a strap around the tree, then inch upward by using the leverage.
"Heave-ho!"
He flung away the one remaining flip-flop on his foot, then jumped hard. One hand gripped an end of his pants while his feet pressed against the trunk, fixing himself in midair.
"What was the next step again? Free one hand and move the strap up? Wouldn't that make me fall?" Loa clutched his pants, dumbfounded again.
After thinking it over, Loa clamped the trunk between his thighs, took a deep breath, and tried to force his pants upward.
Riiip!
He had moved up less than ten centimeters when, accompanied by the sound of tearing fabric, the jeans he had worn for years ripped straight open at the leg. The sudden mishap made Loa stagger, and he was about to fall backward. Fortunately, he reacted quickly. He let go and threw away the pants, then tensed his waist and abdomen, quickly leaning forward and wrapping both arms around the trunk to avoid falling.
After panting heavily for a while, Loa finally decided to give up on that unreliable method. Embarrassed, he slid down the trunk and landed back on the ground.
Though his pants had torn, that was still better than having nothing to cover himself with. As he put them back on, the inner sides of his thighs, reddened from rubbing against the bark, hurt terribly. Loa hissed as he pulled up his pants.
Just then, he looked down and spotted several pebbles near the roots. His eyes shifted, and he picked up two of them. While climbing earlier, he had noticed that although the coconuts looked green and unripe, they were not attached very securely. As the trunk swayed, they knocked against one another overhead with dull thumping sounds.
"I don't know if this will work, but I choose you! Go, Pebble Monster!"
He raised his arm, twisted his waist, lowered his body, and hurled it with all his strength.
Bang!
The instant the pebble left his hand, it let out a muffled boom. Then Loa heard something that sounded like an explosion. Just as he was about to look up, a green hard shell streaked with moisture fell from above, and he instinctively caught it.
Looking at the thing in his hand, Loa slowly opened his mouth in an exaggerated expression, like that famous sloth meme. "Is this... a coconut?"
He hurriedly looked up. Sure enough, the number one coconut beside the one he had aimed at had vanished without a trace. Moreover, the green shells of the surrounding coconuts bore long, jagged scratches, as though bullets had grazed them.
"When did I become this strong? Or is gravity here way lower than on Earth?" Loa blinked, unable to process it.
He lowered his head and looked at the half coconut shell in his hand. In the center of its snowy-white flesh, a thin layer of liquid had gathered. He licked his dry lips and decided not to dwell on the strange event for now. Raising the shell, he tipped his head back and drank it all in one go.
After draining it in a single breath, Loa let out a long sigh. The coconut water was sweet and refreshing, soothing the heat inside his body and making him feel a little better. But coconut water alone could not fill his stomach. Loa looked at his clean, pale fingers and tried using his fingernails to scrape out the coconut flesh.
To his surprise, the coconut flesh, which should have been difficult to remove, was now like the cream inside an Oreo. With a light scrape of his fingernail, he peeled off a large piece.
"Am I really that strong, or is this a special kind of coconut?"
Holding the snowy-white coconut flesh in his hand, Loa had no time to think further. His organs, stirred awake by the coconut water, were revolting. The large amount of gastric acid being secreted made his abdomen burn as if on fire, and he urgently needed food. He opened his mouth wide and bit off more than half of the coconut flesh.
"Mm, a little tough."
He wolfed down the coconut flesh in a few bites, then looked up at the coconuts overhead with gleaming eyes.
Though too much was as bad as too little, the starving and thirsty Loa still ate more than a dozen coconuts before finally patting his stomach in satisfaction and dozing against the coconut tree.
With the issue of feeding himself resolved, Loa finally had the leisure to think about the changes that had happened to him.
Thinking back to how he had run all the way around the island in a panic, Loa now realized how unbelievable that had been. Even if the distance was short, it had still been at least seven or eight kilometers. He had run several kilometers nonstop without resting. Was he really still that subhealthy shut-in office worker? Forget being exhausted half to death—he could not have done it even if it killed him.
No matter how he thought about it, something was wrong.
"Could this be the cheat ability every transmigrator is supposed to have?" Loa pondered as he burped.
What modern young person did not read webnovels? Loa was naturally one of them. Back in his younger, more chuunibyou days, he had imagined more than once what kind of cheat ability he would gain if he really transmigrated someday. Would it be the Sharingan, a Zanpakuto, or a Devil Fruit? He had even fantasized about the abilities of that guy from the SS Brigade.
But he had never expected it to be superhuman strength.
Just then, a transparent blue panel abruptly appeared in the air before Loa. He blinked, thinking his eyes were playing tricks on him. He rubbed them and looked up again, but the panel was still there!
"Is this my cheat ability?"
Loa instantly perked up. The drowsiness caused by his brain receiving too little blood after eating vanished in an instant.
But when he clearly saw the large words at the top of the panel, Loa's expression froze, and he murmured them aloud.
"Ice Dragon Slayer!"
